Ubisoft's Big New Games Have Disappeared From Steam

Yesterday, all three Ubisoft games were up for sale, and just like that, today they're not. Three of the biggest games left to come out in 2015, and on the PC's biggest digital shopfront there is now a black hole where once there were pre-order deals and wishlist entries.

I just checked on Steam and I can't find Unity nor Far Cry 4. The discussion forums are still there though. Both games are still up on Origin (and on uPlay too no doubt).

What could be the problem I wonder?

Ubisoft has been screwing up a lot of stuff lately. I bet it's their fault.

Let me know if Steam loses anything of value.

Steam removes Half-Life 2 from its catalogue.

They might have had some sort of pricing dispute/disagreement with Valve or it could be some sort of glitch in their systems.

Most likely either how DLC is handled on Steam (main reason EA has not released newer games on Steam) or Ubisoft no longer found the profit share percentage acceptable.

Good luck trying to get people to use U-Play.

I'd hope that this is just a technical error and not them hoping to push people into using uplay more.

I would say uplay is the worst digital distribution system ever, but that would be implying that there was something redeeming about Games for Windows Live.

Haha.

If you have a new Ubisoft game on Steam you still need Uplay to run it, which makes buying Ubisoft games on Steam pretty much pointless already.

Still no news on why Ubisoft pulled those titles. Are they trying to promote Uplay somehow? Pull the titles a week before release so people suddenly become desperate and buy them?

Sounds like some sort of legal or contractual dispute. The hush-hush response from all parties seem to be a confidentiality agreement. Ubisoft seem to be confident enough in their own commercial position to pull their games over it.

Well, nobody ever said Ubisoft was smart.

Not relevant to Ubisoft. Buying any Ubisoft game, whether it be from retail, Uplay or Steam, bring with it the Uplay client anyway. Ubisoft may be counting on consumers being familiar enough with Uplay to tolerate it - at least enough to continue buying their games.

That, in Ubisoft's eyes, may well be enough of a leverage in their continuing negotiations with Valve, or at the very least a decent fallback if they fall through. Qualitative merit of the platform in question can always be improved, as Origin demonstrated, even if market adoption as a result of such improvements continue to be a question mark.

I prefer dealing with Uplay on consoles, it's far less annoying than when it's on PC.

Eh, if they did pull an EA I won't miss their games - certainly not enough to have a 3rd store/DRM app for my games.

Sell your DLCs through Steam. Give to Gaben what is Gaben's.

Assuming Steam doesn't have corporate interests ...

Well, at this point, I don't expect Valve to put out any video games this side of the Second Coming, so their corporate interests are in keeping consumers happy and getting as wide of a selection as humanly possible. EA and Ubisoft have the desire to be digital distributors, but also to sell their own games. While not a true conflict of interest, per se, it does put them in a position to have little competition on the digital distribution model if they only sell their games on their system.

It would be like if EA opened their own video game store to compete with retailers, but then wouldn't sell any EA games anywhere else but their stores. And could charge more for their own games with little competition or worry.
