What do you think this "Gamer-gate" is really about?
Corruption in the video game industry?
Or about how deep our bigotry of women and minorities has become?
Because every feminist I've spoken to tells me that it's the latter and not the former.
How did an issue about corruption become about bigotry most specifically misogyny?
I think it's probably some of both. I doubt there will ever be enough money in gaming journalism for video game websites to hire actual professionals who will cover indie games impartially, rather than giving disproportionate coverage to games developed by their friends, but some gamergaters seem to think otherwise. With that said, gamergaters really seem to be weirdly obsessed with the likes of Anita Sarkeesian and other feminists. When I read Gamergate threads, there just seems to be a lot more time devoted to whining about the fact that SJWs exist than there is to discussing how corruption in game journalism can actually be fixed. Judging by the tone of the gamergate rhetoric I've read, they really seem to be propelled by a backlash against SJWs that has been building since #yesallwomen more than they are by the desire to fix ethics in journalism.
I'll admit that I found those emails proving the the collusion on the Gamers are Dead thing disturbing, but honestly, I don't think game journalists are paid enough for us to realistically expect better of them. As for the threats of violence, I don't take the argument that you can judge the character of either side by its threats of violence seriously. Everyone gets death threats online, from politicians to professional atheletes, and the only thing that's going to stop them is increased law enforcement.
