So, I really, really want to play a Qunari. Some of you may even remember the thread I made on the subject way back too. And given that a huge plot element concerns the mages, I thought being a mage would be great too (knight enchanter ftw), given that it would probably have a big impact somewhere down the line, in the story.

However, most of the time I'm a sword and board warrior, as I don't like being confined to the back, just shooting off attacks. To top it off, humans will probably be the most accessible, to see the differences later on via other playthroughs, but considering one playthrough might be over 100 hours and I might need a break after, for you know... work, what should I do?!

Is anyone else having this dilemma?

((Discuss))

I want to play as a qunari for my first playthrough, but knowing me I will probably choose human for my first playthrough. In games that let you choose between species, I always pick humans for my first playthrough.

Check out Lady Ashe's racism video.  I was already planning a FQW for playthrough 1, but her talk about the reactions and how you can respond confirmed it for me.

Yeah, I'm subscribed to her, GamerMD83 and AbilityDrain, for all the updates. Really like those vids, but part of me still wants more. xD

What race did it confirm for you? Or did you mean you're sold on the game?

I'm doing a dice roll for my first character - 2 D20 die for race and class and a coin flip for gender.  You can divvy up classes into 4 categories each if you count rogue twice (once for archer and once for daggers).

...have to re-roll if you end up with a Dwarven mage though.

Why would you split rogue in two but leave warrior as one? Seems it would be easier to use a d4 for race, keep the coin for gender, and use a d6 for class and reroll on 6. Just my take on it anyway.

That's actually why I usually dislike playing the human characters.    I enjoy the underdog role or being the outcast of society.     Last thing I want is something easy.

I already had planned FQW (Female Qunari Warrior), but was open to shuffling around my planned quizzies.  Her race video settled the issue.

Underdog roles are great, but that's why I'm wondering if it's something I'll blatantly notice without having gone through it previously, as something characters are more accepting of.

Well if you role a mage but get tired of sitting at the back then you could just swap over to whatever warrior you have in the part for a bit.

I think the way your human reacts to the issues of the other races will be cause enough to create tension, an inversion of playing as, say, a qunari as well. Maybe not as directly, but supporting the qunari (or a positive stand on their issues) openly as a human might matter more to someone than being qunari in the first place. The fact is we don't know, and considering the scope of the game I think people are going to be disappointed.

There may be some parts of the game with a big enough break to be called major, but the core of the game will, no doubt, be exactly the same despite your race or your class. You might get some extra options (a chance for a peaceful resolution you might not have had as a dwarf, ect) but not enough for it to really matter that much. I don't even think being a templar/mage will matter too much when taking part in their issue except that some of the characters will probably assume a side and be surprised or feel betrayed if you choose the other.

Personally I plan on playing on nightmare and attempting to 1000% the game the first play through as a human knight enchanter, or at least as much I am able (some choices might lock you out of achievements, blah blah).

I could never play as anything other than a female human mage, which is weird since I always avoid humans in other fantasy games. Tried an elf, didn't like it that much. And then I tried a dwarf, which I loved cause they're so adorable, but could never get the hang of the classes (played mage too long). Might try a Kossith (Yes I know you all are going to be like, "No BAD! It's Qunari! But if I played that race I would consider my character not a part of the Qun), just to see how people react. I can only imagine how stained it would be to play not only as that race, but a mage as well. Awkward... Still might end up continuing the tradition of playing a human mage... a crazy one.

Okay, now I'm even more conflicted, because I just saw some of the warrior skills, and I can see so many mix and match options that could make me a beast. Ugh. D:

Do they have a demo of the character creator like they did with Origins and DA2?

Was there for DA2? Can't remember it.

Anyway, no. The Keep is the only thing we have, and no CC there.

Might try a Kossith (Yes I know you all are going to be like, "No BAD! It's Qunari! But if I played that race I would consider my character not a part of the Qun), just to see how people react.

Just to note, Qunari refers to the race as well as the religion (much like "Jew" IRL) - you can be a Qunari [race] without following the Qun [religion], or a Qunari [religion] without being a Qunari [race] - and in fact Qunari Inquisitors can't be part of the Qun, they're all "Vashoth" (a term used to refer to Qunari [the race] born outside of the Qun [religion]). According to Word of God, Kossith is a completely incorrect term to use to describe any <member of the race of grey giants> currently alive, as it refers to a pre-Qun culture that is extinct (and known only to a few scholars), not the race.

I feel your pain!  I look forward to playing through all of the available races, and each gender among those too; meaning that I have planned for at least eight separate runs through Inquisition.

I've predetermined what specializations my "nine" characters will pursue, named them all as uniquely as possible, and determined which romance options my slate of Inquisitors will enjoy. By the way, the bonus character was planned in order to experience each possible specialization. This effort will involve months of game play, so it will take a while as I am pretty much a completist going for everything possible within a game.

That's some dedication. I usually take an hour to create my character's face and then just sit there for 20 more minutes, thinking: now what the hell am I going to name you?
