Not really; He views military expansion as the key to revitalizing the Empire just because the world is on the precipice of change.

 

Nevarra is a rival that has struck against Orlais, Tevinter is a challenge in the north to their influence, how else to establish Orlesian supremacy but by retaking their lost territory and expanding the wealth and territory of the empire?

 

Not to mention the boon it would be to Orlais; merely outfitting and providing for that amount of troops would employ and industrialize many.

 

Sure ignore all the political, economical and territorial gain Gaspard wants for Orlais and it seems like he simply wants to relive the days of Drakon but if you actually apply a medicum of thought then it appears entirely diffrent.

 

That's the thing; I applied a modicum of thought, Gaspard didn't (and still doesn't in DA:I).

 

His reasons for rebelling, and his proposed solutions are, well, inane and ignorant.

Isn't Gaspard prideful? He openly revolted against Celene. How long would it take for him to get fed up with being controlled by an elf?

Almost immediately. But he can't do anything to object despite it, as Briala has "evidence"* implicating him in Celene's death.
 

It certainly doesn't create peace in the empire as it remains controlled by deception/blackmail/threats...

I didn't argue it was for peace, not really. Having an elf just rule the throne? Now, that'll cause some unrest. But if you strictly go for elves first, alone and above all, then Gaspard/Briala.
 

With Briala/Celene, elves are given rights immediately as well. Briala herself is invited to address the court, and is made a marquis by Celene and given land. Not only that, but they continue to improve the lives of elves together, openly.

Celene will always put the empire above the elves. That might actually be for the best, but it's not best for elves. specifically. And, of course, supporting elves so openly is sure to cause some court friction (perhaps not as much as having an elf rule would, admittedly). Of course, Briala is not completely focused on elves, and is more than a bit selfish, but her alone will be much more centred on them alone.

*"Wicked Eyes..." is a confusing quest, but my understanding is that Gaspard, unaware of Florianne's plot, snuck in troops as he expected betrayal. Not from anyone specifically, but, you know, Orlais. Largely elsewhere he's being framed.

After reading TME it was harder for me to just support Celene outright. But after playing DAI I think I'll give the smexy cocky jock a try

Gaspard would not last long on the Orlesian throne. The first time you talk to him he already admits how he detests the game. Celene out played him the throne before and is well versed in the game.Gaspard would be the Alistair of Orlais. Probably strengthen his authority by declaring war on Fereldan and give the nobles a cause to be united. Celene is about peace and recuperating from the last blight. Keeping borders with Tevinter well protected.

Funny, because that's not how it happens in TME where Gaspard outplayed Celene, and she plays the game like an amateur. Stop writing what doesn't happen in the game nor epilogue. You Celene supporter just makes yourself look desperate.

So, as much as I respect Gaspard I still want him to work with Briala so I need some blackmail material... but I have no idea where to find it in the Royal Wing without meeting the duchess. Any ideas?

I still don't know what is the best ending. Gaspard ruling alone? Or convincing everyone to work together? I don't like Orlais to be honest, they brought a lot of harm to a lot of nations, so if keeping everyone alive brings more chaos to the country, I might humor this decision.

If that's your aim, then the best endings for you are probably puppet Gaspard under Briala, or Celene ruling alone with both Gaspard and Briala dead and low court approval.

So is there any reaction from Gaspard being exiled compared to being executed? Like Gaspard supporters in the court shut up when Celene executed Gaspard or do they still support his return? Or the Chelvaliers respect Celene for allowing Gaspard to live or hate her for killing him, or something like that?

I didn't find the Gaspard blackmail items in the royal wing, but in the courtyard outside after a short scene with a harlequin.

I thought that duchess scene provided you with blackmail? The Fereldan mercenary guy after the fight.

But Tywin would eat Gaspard for breakfast though, the two aren't even in the same league

Hell no. Gaspard isn't anything like Tywin. Tywin doesn't want to turn the world into a friggin' war camp.

Just want to leave Celene's assassination concept art here. Please don't take this personal, Celene fans. I thought it was pretty cool and depressing, Blackwall weren't too please with the Inquisitor's decision to not intervene, Sera is shocked while Leliana is saddened by Celene's demise. Irony, that in game Leliana is the one who suggesting that the Inquisitor should let Celene die.

Objectives can always change, and the Inquisition can find a new leader to replace Celene to prevent Orlais from falling apart.

Rather outplay the 3 of them, keep the infighting but without a war part, and make Orlais be ruled by whatever the inquisition supports .
