He is neither evil nor a fool

You may disagree with his ideas for Orlais's future, but when the man refuses to allow torture, was willing to marry Celene and avoid the entire war, kills an ally of his for breaking a truce, you cannot say he is evil.

He can play the game well enough to throw Celene firmly off her game and make stupid decisions.

I personally interpret Gaspard as being close to the 'Noble Demon' trope: http://tvtropes.org/...Main/NobleDemon

The particularly relevant parts are:

He wants to kill The Hero but he won't stab an enemy In the Back. (Killing Remache)

A Noble Demon who's a Proud Warrior Race Guy often comments that his enemies are (or have become) petty and cowardly and stain the name of their species. (See the Chevaliers and Celene)

If Eviler Than Thou comes up, the Noble Demon will likely be on the less evil end. (Killing Remache)

I agree, overall, although considering Gaspard is not exactly up against 'good guys', his trope may not be so defined. If anything, I'd compare him to Skyrim's Ulfric Stormcloak, someone willing to take up arms against a status quo he doesn't agree with, even though he knows that would lead to a war that would surely harm as many as it would help. But then, I'm a Stormcloak supporter...

There are no wrongs and rights in Orlais, just politics. Celene, Briala and Gaspard all have goals they want to see realized, and corners they're willing to cut for those goals. I just happen to favor Gaspard's straightforward approach, and believe it's the one that best compliments the Inquisition.

True, they're all schemers and killers in different ways, though IMO Gaspard's vision for the future of Orlais is the least desirable. Regardless, if you swap 'hero' and 'evil' on the tropes page with words such as 'protagonist' and 'antagonist' respectively (as in TME Celene's team are portrayed as the protagonists while Gaspard et al. are portrayed as the antagonists) it works a lot better.

Of course, but that's a novel, and we're mostly discussing an rpg, where the player influences - and benefits from - the results, and the Orlesian civil war outcome is a minor issue, for now at least. For my Inquisitor, having an emperor, one bound to a code, indebted to him, seems like the best possible outcome for Orlais... Little room or reason for backstabbing, and a lot of reason for military support. He couldn't get that with Celene and/or Briala in power, who both seek to claim the seat of political power that I wish to command.

Of course you can, you only need to make the truce.
You will have a empress bound by fear and blackmail, she will rule as long you allow.

Personally when I read TME I felt like Gaspard was very antagonised half of the book and Celene portrayed as good and just, but towards the end and finally after reading the book I got the impression the Celene was the villain of the whole book and Gaspard was somewhere between, maybe mostly anti-heroic character (that's why I like him, I always like anti-heroes) and Briala was protagonist. Ser Michel was mostly a pawn without own role :P But I think Celene's role at least turned upside-down for me and I felt like her being revealed as the villain was the big turning point of the book.

If you are talking about the Gaspard from the Book, I truly agree ! He is amazing ! Infortunately, in the game, all the  main characters from Masked Empire are bland and not really developped :/

It's normal you felt that way, because we read the story with the point of view of Celene and Briala. We never really had to see Gaspard's thoughts, that's why It could be easy to fall into that trap, and to consider him as evil since Celene and Briala keep telling you that he is evil. It would be different otherwise. Though, despite reading in the head of Celene, I never considered her as the good guy, or then I have quickly stopped to think that way. The fact that Celene made absolutely zero efforts toward Gaspard and for the good of the Empire made me quickly loose my sympathy for her, especially when it's finally just about selfish desires. I started to be a fan of Gaspard, when he trapped her, decided to be audacious and to attack her troops !

Unless many power hungry folks, this guy has balls, he is a real man, nobody can deny his courage !

I agree with the impact of narrator. Although Gaspard got couple scenes at first half of book they were mostly quick and portrayed villanous sides of him, like plotting against Celene and using elves in his gain. I think this changed a lot during second half where Gaspard become of one main characters and was also seen in different light, not only one-dimensional side that was there in the beginning and was narrated by Celene and Briala about him, but  you could see finally more full picture of him, his faults and strenghts which was nice. Still, I believe he remained as villain to many since he was portrayed strongly by main villain of the book during first half.

I actually considered Celene as good guy throught the book, just one that had to do hard decisions, but after plottwist in the end my views of her changed quite alot. It's like Gaspard and she changed places :P
