Are you just trying to miss the point? You cite those cases despite them being the result of the corruption that inherently occurs in a mage.

Beyond that, this is the Gaspard thread, using a quote applied to his war to begin a off topic debate is pointless.

Inherent corruption? Man, I'm pro-templar, but seriously? Seriously?

Well, I guess this is a bit off-topic, so I'll just drop it then.

You know I'm reminded of a quote.

Thinking on the Orlesian civil war...it seems fitting.

The war...was an unnecessary state of affairs and might have been avoided if wisdom and forbearance had been practiced on both sides.- Memoirs of Robert E Lee

Well, Lee was wrong in that what was necessary to avoid his war was mostly not being slaveholding assholes. The War of the Lions, additionally, could have been avoided if Gaspard hadn't been so power-hungry.

Well, one does need a certain degree of awesome to be willing to bow to the wishes of a city elf, I suppose.

Stop derailing please.

Briala has no place in this thread beyond the grave Gaspard put her in.

Derailing? Gaspard still gets to be emperor in this situation; he never stipulated not working with Briala, so far as I know.

The only thing I have to say about that choice is at least the elf will see her death coming.

Better than Celene.

But if this exercise has proven anything it is one simple lesson.

The Lion does not share power.

Period.

So Gaspard would be willing to throw himself into disgrace and probably spark another civil war, one in which the Inquisition would by no means be an ally? It's not like Briala has no leverage.

No, simply surrenders it.

Hardly.

A decade later no one would be concerned with that garbage. It's movement of troops in a tactical position, any supporter of his which is even cited in game as the majority of the military will get it.

She can spew her venom, it won't matter.

Actually, this is false. Gaspard had literally no interest in working with Briala at all. The Masked Empire, and the letters found on the dead servants in the Inquisition, show that he's perfectly willing to enter a truce with Celene against her and her shadow army. He only works with Briala when blackmailed, not a good way to hold onto power for Briala (since Gaspard is old and she can't hold power by herself)

When it comes down to it, Gaspard is the best choice for the Inquisition. He has his flaws, but they can be overcome. Briala is too racist and Celene is incompetent.

Granted, I haven't played this scenario myself directly, so I'll need to get back to you on this particular banter. My preference is to reunite Celene and Briala, in which the humans get their empress and the elves get their reforms, and nothing has to be surrounded by a veil of secrecy. Gaspard, of course, has to die, for a demonstrated inability to get past the fact that he lost the throne because he pissed off the Council of Heralds.

Is there a picture of him unmasked?

Here is a mod that removes his mask in-game.

Though his canonical appearance is that on his tarot card.  Or, as Aeducan posted above, his epilogue slide.

But that's an unreasonable demand to make. It's not unreasonable to say that Gaspard shouldn't have tried to seize power.

Celene should have been more invested in a political marriage than she was. Once Ferelden wasn't possible any more, she basically shrugged the matter off.

Well, naturally. Ferelden would have been the only thing that would have been worth that much of a sacrifice. Gaspard gets no points for worrying about a succession crisis if he decides to just start one himself.

Celene was heirless, her death would have set off a struggle no matter what. By rights it would be Gaspard's but he's already been shafted once.

Celene's refusal to marry only brought the war before she died

And if Gaspard loses, then if he was right, it just means that that war will be followed with a second war; if he was wrong, the whole thing will have been a waste of time and lives. Not to mention that Gaspard has no heirs either, and is rather old, so even if he wins, there's no guarantee of anything working.

I guess marrying someone like Remache would have been an option. But not Gaspard. He was too power-hungry for this to work out and for them to actually be equal partners. And they disagreed on everything.

. Well he's a lot more likely to sire an heir at his age than Celene and Briala are, even ignoring your ridiculous idea with Xeno

. I think Celene would be able to limit his influence if she's as adept at the game as she thinks she is.

Or she can do her duty and simply pop out a few little ones.
