That is not a contradiction at all. There is a stark difference between wanting something, and needing it. Gaspard and Celene don't need the Inquisition to succeed in their endavours, however they both want the Inquisition, because it would strengthen their cause. The Inquisition is in far more dire need of either candidate, than they are of it.
While we as the players may be privy to far more knowledge than Gaspard and Celene, that doesn't really change the fact of how they see things. They DON'T need the Inquisition, but they can see the usefulness of it.
True, but you make it sound like they are strong enough to succeed in their endeavours and able to stop the Breach alone while leave Orlais in one piece. While Celene or Gaspard's forces may be superior than the Inquisition they cannot simply attack the Inquisition without facing backlash and self-destruction consequences since...as you can see the Inquisitor are the only person who can close the Breach, and many people seeing you as some sort of holy figure. It's also a reason why Celene or Gaspard wants your support to strengthen them.
It may be just my speculation but once the Inquisitor help Gaspard ascends to the throne or secure Celene's power that is when the Inquisition becomes more vital and are really "needed" to deal with the Breach since the current ruler of Orlais is going to ask you to deal with the Breach within their border.
