It seems to have been revealed that friendly fire will be a toggle option on any difficulty. If this is the case, will you guys be playing with friendly fire turned on?

I’m planning my first playthrough to be on Hard, but I’m ambivalent about whether to go for Friendly Fire. In theory I’d like to turn it on as it feels more “honest”, and that’s how I always played Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but because the AI is really good at charging into the blast radius of spells in Dragon Age I’m not so keen on it.

I’m not playing on PC so micromanaging my team to make sure they stay away from a mob I’m about to fireball seems like it’ll be a real pain.

What are you guys doing?

Will largely depend on how balanced the abilities are around FF. If encounters are balanced properly around FF, then yes I will most definitely go with FF.

I tend to favor large and frequent explosions as my main means of combat so...no.

Yeah, I'm planning to turn it on, although I'm also planning on using the Normal difficulty setting.  I'm really keen on taking advantage of the tactical nature of combat, and like you said, friendly fire seems more honest and immersive.

I'm inclined to say no.

Friendly fire has always been a hate-hate relationship for me in Dragon Age, namely because you can only command the actions of your characters and not control them. For example in Mass Effect, where you shot and used your powers was entirely up to you - the player - and your ability to aim. In Dragon Age there is very little stopping my tank from being chased by a mob that I happen to wish to set on fire.

It always felt like I was playing against myself rather than the game, and boy is that ever a frustrating experience.

I think I'll start on hard and with friendly fire on and see how it goes from there. No idea if I'll keep it on, I've never really played with it in the previous games.

No.  I'm more into story over combat.  Anything that eases combat helps me progress that much further through the story.

No. Why would I want combat to be annoying? I want to have fun and I can't have fun when I'm worrying about being backstabbed by a fireball. If I want more realism I play the simulation called Real Life ™, which is boring, IMO.

It depends on how balanced the combat is. I will be playing on Hard because Nightmare to be is a just a difficulty mode that causes players to engage in hair pulling and intense rage...So I want to see how balanced the combat is on Hard with friendly fire.

If it is balanced then yeah, I will keep it on.

I liked a DA:O mod with a mage spec called "arch mage". the final ability in the tree was that the mage could makw holes in the magic to prevent friendly fire.

I liked that.. So my warden could avoid ff, while the others had it enabled. I played with that on nightmare and had fun. it added some realism, without FF being a coimplete pain in the ass.. I wish this was in DA:I

I'm unsure. I played Origins and DA2 only on nightmare so I'm fine with friendly fire when it comes to spells because magic is ridiculously easy if you can just drop AoEs all over your group; however I didn't like it being added to melee attacks in DA2. All it did was prohibit 2h warriors from my party.

If melee friendly fire is in Inquisition and can't be toggled separately then I'll probably leave it off.

It'll be off for me. I'm really good at cooking my entire team when I have friendly fire on.  :P

At first I'll probably have it off just so I can throw spells around without worrying to get to know everything.

I might turn it on afterwards if the party member AI doesn't lack basic survival instincts.

Not on my first playthrough.  Not on my second playthrough either....

I might turn FF on for my third or fourth... To give myself a challenge.  But if Friendly fire doesn't work both ways(the enemies hurting their own team, too) then I don't think I'll keep it on for very long.

I plan to turn it on in the beginning.

If it turns out too difficult to manage I will turn it off until I am more familiar and comfortable with the game mechanics. Then I'll turn it on again. Fireballs that hurt enemies only don't sound right to me... unless my party is 100% fire-resistant, of course. Loved making Alistair 100% fire-proved and throwing fire on top of him and swarms of enemies... good times.)

Same as @FrogDog for me.

I love FF for spells and abilities as these are things that you actively can control as the player.     I hate it passionately for melee attacks.    A warrior doesn't just blindly swing their sword around hitting friend and foe alike.   To me, that's just really poor implementation.

Watching Fenris go to "help" another party member and watching him cut down half your party to get to the last remaining thug was frustrating.   If they can't be bothered to program the AI to identify when and where to swing their sword, then they should not be programming in FF melee attacks either.

FF for player chosen spells and abilities... yes.   AI controlled attacks,... absolutely not.

If I could turn it off for basic two handed melee attacks only, I'd probably do that... srsly, that sh!t was annoying in DA2.

But since that's not the case, it stays on.
