4/10 Playthroughs of mine are always Mages.

So... yeah - No Friendly Fire.

I have an unfortunate habit of roasting my tanks like rotisserie chickens or throwing out a lightning storm that my ranged people run into.

I'll try it, I guess. But if it's like DA2 and *All* classes have potential for AoE (Scythe, Mighty Blow, Miasmic Flasks etc.), then no.

Do we know if it does?

I don't know, it's something I'm hoping will get answered during Early Access since as far as I'm aware no one's mentioned anything about it.

Well, you could also be like me: Old "hardcore" player turned half-casual that got really tired of the harder-is-more-fun-and-challenging shenanigans.

I was there in the 90's with the Eye of the Beholder games and similar, and Arena and Daggerfall, and Baldur's Gate, etc. Getting older I just don't have the patience nor see the fun in games like Dark Souls that just come off as overdone on the "challenging" aspect.

My philosophy is as long as you're having a good time that's all that matters. If that is the case for you, then it is perfectly fine. Super crazy difficult mode? No thanks. But enough to keep my mind engaged, to keep me from being able to auto pilot? Yes please! Again, this is just me. Personally finding out that a 7 year old was able to succeed in easy mode puts me off, but then those young buggers are smart these days.

I am going to try nightmare difficulty, ff off, and will adjust as needed.

Cause I'm playing on console I think I'll turn it off. If I was playing PC it would be on.

I'll start on hard, maybe I'll play on nightmare in another playtrough. Never been a fan off nightmare mainly due to the mob immunity. If nightmare was harder than hard without the immunity mob protection, I'd play that. I find just that one particular thing teeth grinding unfun.

I probably will, because it really enforces a lot more thinking about tactics. Perhaps even more so than just turning the difficulty up a notch.

You can't park your big tank in a group of mobs and then throw down all hell on them in the form of AOE because your own dudes will die. So suddenly positioning, awareness and moving your party members to the correct positions becomes a lot more important.

Which I like.

It seems to have been revealed that friendly fire will be a toggle option on any difficulty. If this is the case, will you guys be playing with friendly fire turned on?

I’m planning my first playthrough to be on Hard, but I’m ambivalent about whether to go for Friendly Fire. In theory I’d like to turn it on as it feels more “honest”, and that’s how I always played Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but because the AI is really good at charging into the blast radius of spells in Dragon Age I’m not so keen on it.

I’m not playing on PC so micromanaging my team to make sure they stay away from a mob I’m about to fireball seems like it’ll be a real pain.

What are you guys doing?

Yes, I can imagine it might be unwieldy with a gamepad.

In my case I've always played the combat encounters for Dragon Age games entirely in the pause menu. I disable all the AI tactics and micromanage every action by each party member. As a result, it's more fun and challenging to play with friendly fire and on the hardest difficulty setting.

Enjoying that feeling when you die lots of times and then finally defeat a tough group of enemies.

It's going to be a lot more unforgiving without the auto-healing (not that it's a bad thing). Depends on how well health vs. damage is balanced.

Unless there is some kind of tangible incentive for me to turn friendly fire on (e.g. bonus exp, power, etc.), I will be keeping it off.

Edit: Unless I decide to do a nightmare run, in which case I will turn FF on simply for the added challenge.

The only time I'll be turning friendly fire on is when I make an attempt at hard and nightmare mode. Otherwise, no effin way.

I'll have it off, I'd feel too bad if I accidentally hit one of my companions.

It depends whether it affects enemies similarly.

Of the enemies are subject to FF, and theirs is similarly dangerous to them, then I will definitely have FF on.

But if enemies are immune to FF, or if HP asymmetry is such that enemy FF isn't tactically relevant, then I will play with FF off (and not enjoy the game as much).

For example, I liked FF in DAO because enemies were always subject to FF. I only liked it in DA2 at lower difficulties, given the HP asymmetry. In NWN amd NWN2, I played both with FF at release, but when enemy FF was removed from both (in patches), I stopped playing with FF (and I enjoyed them less).

Ya, I love FF, but only if it is balanced properly, and enemies having to go by the same rules is the only way it is enjoyable to me. Hopefully it is like this.

Ever since I played Baldur's Gate for the first time, I never turned FF off. So yes, I'll have FF turned on in DA:I.

I'm guessing I will play DA:I on Normal with FF off. Never cared much for overly difficult combat in DA (and Mass Effect). I'm mainly in Bioware games for the story. So if there is going to be some kind of challenge I'd rather see that put in to the story. Such as making difficult choices.

I was hoping FF would be mandatory on nightmare, otherwise what's the point?

Wat? That would just be a variable with difficulty, much like variables in X-Com.

This.

Also, it depends on whether or not the game was balanced with ff in mind. If the damage of abilities is balanced for the absence of ff, aoe abilities are likely to have far too little damage once ff is on. One just needs to compare the damage of aoe spells in DA:O and DA 2. A spell like fire or lightning storm like in DA 2 would be utterly useless with the kind of damage it has in DA 2 and ff on.

I probably wouldn't even bother playing the game if it didn't have FF.  Either that or I would just use the dev console to force kill everything every battle, it's essentially the same thing, just faster.  If I was going to do that though I'd just watch the cut scenes on youtube and save myself the bother.

So turn it on?  Easy peasy.  Doubtless they gave players the option because of the reworking of the combat system.  I always play on Easy anyway since I prefer to enjoy the story over the combat.  I think it will be challenging enough for me without the FF, so I turn it off.

I'll be keeping that off.

I don't want to end up killing one of my party members by accident due to a badly placed AoE or them rushing right into the hit box.
