Will you be turning friendly fire on?

Big magical explosions not harming your own people is about as immersion-breaking as things can get. FF will be on in my games, even if I have to play on Easy for that. I doubt it though.

I will if I can, killing the entire party with chain lightning at least once is part of the experience.

I see it now: Nightmare + FF on will be the latest thing to brag in forums.

Hey!
That is my exact reason and motivation for playing through NM+FF. I will attempt to be the first player here to complete NM+FF with complete playthrough (not MQ rush playthrough). I'm looking so forward to bragging about it that I can hardly contain myself.

I would encourage anyone thinking of turning on friendly fire, to do it! Magic is supposed to be dangerous, that is why it is left to the wise to master it. Mages are feared for good reason, because no matter how much good they can do, they are always capable of doing very bad things, often and in most cases by accident.
I know some will naturally find combat hard, but the only thing holding you back is fear, every gamer is equal, but if you are never willing to die and try again you are not willing to become better. The people who don't like or suck at combat are the ones that fall in love with it the most when they learn how to do it, I should know because that was me, but one day i decided to turn up the difficultly and be patient and found that playing games became so much more fun.
My fondest memories of games and bosses are the ones where i repeatedly failed, whether it was dying 100 times to M.Bison in street fighter 2 as kid to being responsible for wiping my whole raid in the lord of the rings online fighting the balrog. Davaeorn in Baldurs Gate is another fond memory, that fight taught me how to use area of effect skills with friendly fire on.
My point is you never remember the fights that are mere formalities.

I always play with whatever 'normal' is intended and if FF is turned on by default, then I will play with it on.

Yes, because immersion is important in a roleplaying game.
Nightmare and FF, for the win! ![]()

Probably not, but I may change my mind while playing.

During my second and onward playthroughs most likely, or half-way through my first one. All about getting a feel for the gake to decide when I turn that on..
Given aiming to do tact mode a lot will be of benefit to have that turned on.

I'm keeping it off. It might be more 'honest', but it's my game, and I don't think it would help group moral to be set on fire by the group mage.

Your rousing speech is quite inspiring, but I can say I have never had fond memories of any boss fight that spanked my butt and took me more than two or so tries. Or probably any boss fight at all lol. For me I don't give a flip one way or another about challenging combat. In fact, I like to avoid frustration as much as possible. Basic murder of my enemies is enough to satisfy me ![]()
But on the note of magic, I find it pretty easy to come up with my own headcanon explanation for the lack of friendly fire. If my mage can cast something like barrier, why not imagine they have some sort of similar spell or power to shield companions from their own magical signature, or however you might want to think of it. Daydreaming over in-game strategy for me (not that I actually care one way or another about FF being 'realistic' or not, but it's fun to think up these kind of things anyway.)

I will be playing with FF on and going straight to Nightmare difficulty for two main reasons:
1. I want the combat to be as difficult as possible.
2. I enjoy having to micro manage my party's positioning and FF will add another element of risk/reward to my combat execution.

Only if I'm capable of programming AI to smartly use their abilities. If it's going to be like DA2 where a warrior simply attacks and KOs all my other melee users then it's quickly going to get toggled off.

I never use friendly fire myself. I like to assume me and my people are competent enough that we would actively strive not to harm one another during combat. Plus, I don't really enjoy having to replay long stretches of battle or gameplay because my AI companions didn't parse the fact that activating that exploding technique right next to the bulk of our party was a REALLY bad idea.

No. I don't need another one of these situations-
*nightmare fight, doing well
SUDDENLY FENRIS
Fenris used whirlwind
entire party wiped out instantly and Fenris is killed by an enemy a second later
you got a gameover because of an AI character being a moron, congrats*
Or if you're the 1 handed warrior, doing a whirlwind only to realize Varric and Anders were right behind you without you knowing it and you just killed half your party. It was nothing but a big inconvenience. I could deal with mages having friendly fire, but once warriors were brought in on the friendly fire thing too... I got very annoyed, very quickly. F that crap.

This is great news and is like the old games I'm fond of, having this option, that is.
It will be off for me...My friendly fire damage points in DA:O is something like 250K. ![]()

It will be off for me, maybe once I have played it a few times I might try it but I think I am not a good enough player to do survive friendly fire damage.

I will if they DIDN'T totally eff up the behavior system, and IF my party has the sense to stay out of the range of a melee warrior's AoE.
If that wasn't fixed--then no, and I won't feel like I'm playing wrong.

Definitely not on my first playthrough. I want to get to know the game and it's mechanics better before trying my hand at things like hard/nightmare and friendly fire.
