I would encourage anyone thinking of turning on friendly fire, to do it! Magic is supposed to be dangerous, that is why it is left to the wise to master it. Mages are feared for good reason, because no matter how much good they can do, they are always capable of doing very bad things, often and in most cases by accident.
I know some will naturally find combat hard, but the only thing holding you back is fear, every gamer is equal, but if you are never willing to die and try again you are not willing to become better. The people who don't like or suck at combat are the ones that fall in love with it the most when they learn how to do it, I should know because that was me, but one day i decided to turn up the difficultly and be patient and found that playing games became so much more fun.
My fondest memories of games and bosses are the ones where i repeatedly failed, whether it was dying 100 times to M.Bison in street fighter 2 as kid to being responsible for wiping my whole raid in the lord of the rings online fighting the balrog. Davaeorn in Baldurs Gate is another fond memory, that fight taught me how to use area of effect skills with friendly fire on.
My point is you never remember the fights that are mere formalities.
Magic? That is hardly the problem (being a mage as mc i can avoid frying half of my team). The problem is another Fenris-like. In DA2 it was rather frustrating when whirlwind kill half of the party and i have no intention of repeating it again.

Well I liked it in Origins and hated it in DA2, FF was the reason I never played on nightmare in DA2, it was just irritating. I am hoping that the tac cam and having a lot more space to move around will solve the DA2 problems I had so I will be playing on hard with it switched on to start with.

You should be able to set the abilities the companions use on their own in the tactical settings. In DAO, I carefully configured all mages to never use AOE attacks on their own. I hope, I can do that in DAI as well. If I want a great big fireball, I'm going to do it manually.
Regarding DA2, that suffered from the "It's always an ambush" problem. In DAO, I often opened a fight with an AOE attack, but that isn't possible if the enemies are all around you as soon as you know there's going to be a fight. From the videos, it appears like positioning tactics will work again in DAI.

I highly doubt it.
I might experiment with it. I just couldn't see leaving it on with the limit on healing.
