Based on this image and the commentary about it, I am speculating that ME4 will take place some time after the Reaper War. I also believe it will take place in the Milky Way galaxy.
 
 

 

When discussing this image the developers mentioned a few things. First, it was meant to invoke memories of things we have seen before. They specifically mentioned the LED sky. Which is to say, The Citadel. They also seemed to hint at this being a hub. With those two things  in mind, it seems clear that the Citadel will not be in the next game. It may still exist for all I know, but it won't be in the game. This leads to my speculation that this could possibly be the new seat of a galactic government. At any rate I think this image points to ME4 taking place sometime after the Reaper War.

 

Also, when the developers talked about exploration, they talked about exploring "the" galaxy with no hesitations or pauses, as if they were simply taking it for granted that "the" galaxy was the Milky Way. The idea that ME4 would take place in some other galaxy has always struck me as preposterous, though it does speak to how badly ME3 ruined the ME universe that people would think this was necessary.

The simple thing that indicates this is a location from times set after ME3 is that it looks like a notorious big place someone would at least mention about from time to time if it existed in ME-1-3.

 

Most likely this is a place build after ME3, possibly a recreation of the original Citadel witch in canon outset of the new ME game could have been destroyed at the end of Reaper War in ME3.

 

Is there a better place to serve as a visual template for rebuilding, if all surviving races of ME3 wanted to build "new" Citadel? Well no - so no wonder this place looks very much like the original Citadel.

 

But I have to say that I do like what I saw today durning the N7 twitch stream.

 

Many would suggest we got barely anything.

I have to say it's good they gave us what they did, why?

 

The most obvious thing is the upcoming release of Unicorns and Dragons 3 (DA:I).

 

But IMO Bioware did something good - it learned from previous ME games, that teasing too much about the game just to please whining fans did in the end a lot more damage than good.

Mass Effect is a LOT about story and on top of that in the ME "4" Bioware also wants to put emphasis on that PLUS exploration.

 

The concept arts show us that in great deal - we good space exploration, riding mako on planets (even on a meteorite/dwarf planet!)

 

If they told us now a few key things about the plot/charactes - they would eventually spoil us the fun.

What they should have shown us - they also did. We know now that they want exloration/various location/exciting views.

There will be new alien races, just awesomesauce.

 

I only wish they shown us one more thing - how new-gen Turians and Krogans look up-close from all directions.

Frostbite 3 surely allows them to add lot more detail to these races, than previous engine did.

Did anyone really believe it would take place outside the Milky Way? The galaxy is a huge place, and there are plenty of solar systems for BioWare to explore. Also, did BioWare confirm that is in fact not the Citadel? It looks a lot like it, and I wouldn't be surprised if we returned to it. I also thought it was common sense that this would take place post-Shepard Era. While Shepard may not have a presence in the next Mass Effect game, surely our choices will be reflected in some way when BioWare makes a Keep for Mass Effect.

 

People can whine and moan all they want about the ME3 ending. It's canon. It's not getting retconned. It's part of the franchise. I'm sure the next Mass Effect will reflect Shepard's choices in ME1-3 to a large degree and could affect what kind of Milky Way we encounter.

It looks nothing like the Citadel. Except in an extremely general sense that it is obviously a variation of the Stanford torus design used to evoke a reminiscent feeling of the Presidium.

One thing though - the physics of the thing is wrong. If it is meant to be a sort of Stanford torus, it wouldn't work unless there was linear acceleration along an axis parallel to that central pillar, as well as rotation about the axis of the central pillar, you could not create artificial gravity in a way that would allow people to live comfortably on the curvature like that. That's why I think it might be a Bernal Sphere (see below).

With the Presidium, it was a classic torus with the living area perpendicular to the axis of rotation. This image does not show this. And that intrigues me, because it makes you wonder what type of structure would have the characteristics I just described. A ship, for example, could explain a design like this - and indeed some real life proposals of generation ships have described something similar. So, I dont know if it is a simple space station, but it definitely isnt a simple torus like the Presidium was. It looks closer to a Bernal Sphere than a Stanford torus:

But even then, the curvature still isn't right for a Bernal Sphere.

Granted, artificial gravity can also be created via the mass effect - but then you wouldn't need a torus type station at all. The architecture would be unnecessary.

When I first saw this Image, I thought of Rodia, from the Star Wars Clone Wars Series.

 

So, a Shielded Complex/Space Station/structure? To protect its population from attack by mysterious races? Solar Radiation, like that Colony back in ME2?

 

I also thought of Kahje, under the dome like structure, but as we can properly see the clouds, so I dismissed...

More speculation: the following two images are related to the same species and will constitute the main adversary in ME4.
 

 


They show the same style: very angular with many flat planes. I'm guessing the species will also seem rather mechanical or angular in appearance.

Given that Bioware kept trying to get fans stop referring to the next game as Mass Effect 4, I'm still doubtful it is a sequel. I think the next game is probably going to be set outside Citadel/Terminus space.

Speculation : In the stream i noticed that they talked some about wanting expand the role of space in the game other than just pointing and clicking.. i wonder if we get a spacecraft that we can control dirrectly in this game.

I noticed that they mentioned "space as a place" seeming to imply that you might see more than just the galaxy map from ME2/3.

 

Perhaps that hashtag #space means more than just a sci-fi setting, but an actual game mechanic.

I agree, although I hope they are just profoundly alien and not mechanical - that's been done and hopefully buried. But both images look like very advanced tech.

I thought of the Citadel right away when I saw that image in cap's first post. I thought it could be a repaired and redesigned Citadel, one that is stationary above Earth.

That was my thought too. Not necessarily as 'the' antagonists, although Mkie Gamble did mention the location in the first image being a place where you could 'shoot people square in the face'. He seemed worryingly excited about shooting people in the face.

I love that they all but confirmed the existence of two new species. That, together with the citadel-that's-clearly-not-the-citadel, adds a lot of weight to the speculation that the game is set post ME3. Which is good news, IMO.

Yanick Roy also hinted at more info coming within a few months after DA:I's release too. Can't wait.

If you look closely in the foreground of that first pic, there seem to be some mechanical looking constructs scattered around. They could be varieties of mechs.

Yeah, but the way they're discussing it still fits with being a "sequel".

They just seem to want fans to know that it's not reliant on following up on the end of the trilogy. Like it wants to be more than the fourth installment.

It certainly, in no way, looks like a prequel, thanks Victoria. For me, it looks considerable more advanced than what we have in the trilogy, or at least a different kind of advanced, so hopefully it will keep a long distance from it.

Well, since the Relay system was, essentially, a galactic "freeway" of sorts, specifically channeling development between a limited number of systems, there's plenty of room (like, another 100 billions stars' worth) in this galaxy for new exploration. I expect a completely new gate system will be found, revealing a totally separate group of civilizations that have thrived throughout galactic history, completely oblivious to and ignored by the Reapers. Given the size of our galaxy, there could actually be hundreds of such networks and civilizations, all living their own cycles and histories, never seeing each other because of the impracticality of true FTL travel in the ME universe.
