As the topic title asks, what does Dragon Age mean to you?

What I mean is, how has this game impacted your life? To some, I'm sure it's just another game, but for others, it could mean so much more.

For me, Dragon Age is something I cherish greatly, when I was younger and Dragon Age Origins first came out, I was very depressed. I didn't have any friends, and, I was pretty anti-social. I loved video games, especially RPGs, but, Dragon Age was different from them all. From the moment I jumped into the game for the very first time, I was engrossed in it all. The lore, the characters, everything. The game really hit me on an emotional level because as I grew to love each character, they became my friends. Friends that I didn't have in real life. Dragon Age taught me many lessons, made me laugh, and most importantly, cured me of my depression. It helped me break out of my shell and finally begin to make friends. Since then, Dragon Age has been my favorite game series, and it will always hold a special place in my mind.

So, what does Dragon Age mean to you guys? Is it important to you? Do you just view it as another game? Are you obsessed? Share your stories below! :D

It's a game I'm willing to buy new even when I'm low on money.

It also taught me that choices are never black and white and sometimes harsh decisions must be made for the good of the whole.

To me dragon age is a world of adventure, politics, and no easy answers. I was in a grim place when i found this series and over the years bioware and its fans helped me get out from that. Ive played bioware games since i was 14, but dragon age hold a special place in my heart for its mature look on romances, social issues, and politics.

To say i love dragon age is a disservice

Dragon Age didn't cure me of my depression--that's gonna be a lifelong battle--but it sure as hell did has made some of the lower parts of living with that a lot more bearable. That's probably the reason I fell in love with it at first....that it seemed like this dark fantasy, but then the characters with all their humor and pain, were so real and that resonated deeply with me during a time when I was trying very hard to be numb.

I love what kinds of stories they tell....how you can try to detangle the narrative and examine it from all sides and there's never a right answer, just a lot of equally honest perspectives. I love that I can participate in these epic, amazing stories and make those stories about people like me instead of feeling alienated and excluded by the media I love.

I also think for me, the more I love a property, the more its value transcends the property itself...being in Dragon Age fandom across various websites and real life locales has been huge. Even though it's often aggravating, combative, and confusing, it's full of amazing people and many of whom I have transitioned from discussing Dragon Age to discussing our real lives and becoming more than fandom friends. I was at a con a few months ago and I spent the whole time with some amazing women I've met through Bioware fandom, and it was one of the most validating, connected experiences I've had in a long time. And even the fandom friends I have made brighten my day on a daily basis. :3  And even the people I disagree with often open my eyes to another perspective, which is invaluable.

EDIT: And I think the devs being so open and involved has contributed too. Makes things feel smaller and more connected...less of a consumer relationship (which tbh is probalby bad thing sometimes).  Bioware fandom feels like a family. Literally the most dysfunctional family of all time, don't get me wrong.... but still.

Also this. This is my less melodramatic, non-wine inspired response.

Dragon Age, especially Origins isn't just a game to me. I discovered it during one of the worst periods of my life, and it was one of the things that helped me to get through all the bad things that were happening at the time.

I'm pretty anti-social person and not very good at picking friends, so to speak, and when I play Dragon Age games and see characters who are somewhat like me when it comes to forming friendships, making true friends, I feel better about myself and gain a bit more hope that someday I'll have similar friends who won't treat me like dirt or make me feel bad about myself all the time.

Even if Dragon Age team won't notice this, thank you.

It costs me 60 bucks every few years, and then I don't get to buy some other game. Does that count?

I just bought origins and DA earlier this year and, my goodness, I did not know such a game existed. I adore fantasy settings, but have never been much of a gamer. I've played, and enjoyed the Elder Scrolls series, but the characters always felt flat to me and I never became really immersed. Dragon Age completely changed that. I've cried over the loss of characters and the situations my PC has been in. It's unreal! I never thought I would become so obsessed with a video game! Dragon Age is amazing it's some of my favorite books, but with me as the main character (And when I say me I mean a more bad-ass, less prone to gripe about physical exertion me)! Before I found this game I din't know what a RPG was or even what forums were (I'm a social invert), but here this game has me signed up typing away about my lack of gamer experience.

It's being able to escape reality, enjoy a story and characters. One game of the series is enough to keep my mind occupied for at least half a year.

The wait until the 20th is starting to be unbearable to be honest. I go through the day, counting minutes, bored, and everything I eat taste like ashes.

So yeah, more than a hobby.
