Yeah I've restarted a couple of times but I think I have a handle on it now. Playing Scholar have the Abbess as counsellor for now and will soon have the Hunter again.

can the Huntress have the Elegant Abbess as a lover or is she gender gated meaning only lover option Huntress has is the drunk bard?
and if the Abbess can be the huntress's lover where is the option for this?
It's not gender-gated, you just need to make her your Counsellor first.

The Scholar, because ruling a kingdom needs an intelligence stat.

The Scholar, because ruling a kingdom needs an intelligence stat.
Unless that kingdom is Fereldan. Maric, Cailan, and possibly Alistair seem to set that bar pretty low for how easily manipulated they are.

What is the best approach for generating secrets?
I'd like to know this too. Frantically clicking through cards to try and find another opportunity to gain a secret, but haven't found a thing.

Seems like people are having some trouble. Having the 'restart' ability is really handy to familiarize yourself with each companion and their requirements.
Some helpful things to know:
- There are multiple currencies that are important within the game. The first being Clues, which is used to purchase stat points from companions/trainers along with other things. The second is Royals, which is a currency akin to sovereigns. This currency can be attained through the Glass quests, where you force the workers to do overtime to get pay from other nations, OR you can go to Gather Resources and trade 30 prosperity, 3 action points, and pass a Ruler Ship Skill check to get 3 royals. It's used to pay people for favors, buy things for your companions and etc. The last currency is Authority, which is pretty important in the mid/late game because you use it to summon your companions when they're not showing up through your hands for whatever reason. This is used by some companions to gain favors, but the most useful aspect of this currency is to summon companions to get them to teach you skills, or to make them join your court.
Depending on the way you see it, Dignity, Prosperity, and Freedom can also function as currencies.
- Clues are super important in the early game because you're using it to get the companions to train you. The amount of clues required to train varies depending on your skill level, lower skill = lower price and etc. The lowest cost I've seen is about 21 clues and the highest I've had is about 50.
- if freedom, prosperity, dignity, peril = 0, your city ceases to function and you get a penalty to your card draws until you get +1 in any of the three
- if twilight (demons & blood mages), rumors of revolution (aka. uprising/anarchy), or peril (bandits) reaches above 75, you can draw a card that occupies your 'hand' until you get rid of it. If it reaches 100, you can undergo a risky event to get a potential reward in the form of a trophy, secret, or viand (some luxury good). to my knowledge, the reward for completing 100 Peril = 1 trophy, the reward for 100 twilight = viand, and the reward for 100 rumors (anarchy) is 1 secret.
- Favors, don't worry about favors too much in the beginning. Save your money IE royals and etc. until you have an idea of how you want to proceed with 'ruling' your kingdom. Bandits are going to be a MAJOR pain in the ass, followed by peasants revolting. The easiest group to deal with is Twilight, at least in my experience.
- Don't be afraid to restart your game to get a hang of the basics and familiarize your game.
- If you want the story to progress, click on the right side towards the chantry secret door, which requires a moderate amount of cunning to unlock, followed by other skill checks. I think I have about 43 cunning and got through.
On Companions:
In my opinion, the most helpful companion obviously depends on what your greatest deficiencies are. Personally, the Guild mistress, outlaw, and the hunter were the easiest to acquire for my huntress because I had high wealth and dignity. For the hunter, you just need trophies, which you get 1 for free in the beginning through the tutorial if you seize the merchants goods, and you get another trophy if you have 100 dignity and 25 clues which you then trade for a trophy. You end up with 50 dignity.
The outlaw requires sacrificing your prosperity, increasing your Peril, and something else in order to gain her favor.
The other companion that I would also stress importance on is the dowager as she provides instruction of Ruling, which is related in many elements in the story.

I hope this is helpful for some of you.

Secrets can be gained if you click on 'Preparing for Divine', and trading 100 freedom and 25 clues, in exchange for 1 secret. You end up sacrificing 1/2 of your freedom, leaving you with 50 Freedom left.
The alternative is to get your Rumors of Revolution to 100, then fulfilling a quest, that requires you to pass a skill check, where you "put down the rebellion", which, upon completing, you gain 1 secret, and reduce the Rumors of Revolution to 50 or so.

I choose Flames of Freedom, but am only like 2 quests in, so I haven't seen much yet. But there is a unique interaction with the Purveyor of Teas (you get some free - no check required- clues).

Seems getting to the second Market day opens up a lot of stuff.
Kinda think they messed up by making the first day so uninteresting. But now I actually have a lot of stuff to do. Which is neat.

I see, I'll wait for a bit more of info mind telling me, either via spoilers or a message, what it is about? Nothing just too spoiler, like the theme you have found so far and whatnot. Thank you nonetheless

Curious if this is a bug or working as intended: when I get the Silent Hunter card I can select his "special" (AKA the option that requires 1 Favor) without having to spend a Favor, despite the description stating I need one. He's my bodyguard so I thought perhaps that superseded the requirement, but my counselor's & accomplice's "specials" still cost a Favor.
Anyone else get this? It makes him pretty much the best member of my little group, hands-down.

I chose Scholar and have had a tough time progressing. So much so in fact, that I threw in the towel and changed to Huntress. Then I did okay, but was irked that my original choice hadn't gone the way I wanted, pulled the plug on the Huntress, and then rebooted the Scholar.
I'm sticking with this one, although my second go round has mirrored the first?

Several people have said that she leaves you as soon as you recruit her.
This shouldn't happen anymore - I think I've fixed the bug that was causing it. Feel free to conspire with the Dashing Outlaw to your heart's content!

That's definitely a bug. The Silent Hunter is awesome, but he's not *that* awesome. I'll try and fix it.

Oh, Maker!
I've opened the sealed Chantry's door with the Bard Lover. Now there's a new message:
"You can enter ... if you dare"
"This is Unwise and will have lasting repercussions"
I'm actually scared shitless of what could happen.

Well, we are making a huge feast for the Divine.
So I guess she wouldn't like the idea of being greeted by Abominations, Daemons, rapists Blood Mages and such.
