I love DA elves (though switching builds in games confuses me looks-wise; I do prefer this look to the DA2 one) because they are NOT graceful, ethereal, magical beings. They're a race that is thoroughly screwed over in Thedas - either becoming isolationist tribes that develop their own problems and prejudices or becoming subjugated as second-class citizens or slaves. It's a very refreshing take.

Does anyone else hate the way elves are depicted in the series, I mean they are supposed to be graceful, etherial beautiful mythic beings not the spindly pidgeon chested things they now look like in games two and three of series.

So...you want Dragon Age to be even more of a generic fantasy game?

Well, that's a first, but I don't think I should be surprised anymore.

The Dalish elves are lairs. They were never immortal the used blood magic to prolong there lives. they Lie to uneducated city elves to tell them stories and get them to join there clan they need new breeding stock can't have inbreeding among the elves now.

. First, learn English. Second, they do not lie to city elves, hell some of them do not see the city elves as elves. And devs please close this stupid thread.

I like the Dragon Age elves the way they are. Even though I'm a sucker for the Tolkienesque elves I'm still glad that Bioware choose to go their own way and create their own kind of elves.

I actually really like the subversion of the common tropes on elves and dwarves in DA :) they are culturally interesting.

I am not saying make the elves like every other depiction of elves in genre (Tolkien etc) I'm saying in the franchise books and game they repeatedly say the elves are objects Objects of human lust and desire ? These models are not, the books promised apples and we got oranges. I also love the direction the story has taken with the elves as a subjugated people a pale shadow of what they once were, a mystery we may never unravel. Playing the underdog character such as an elf or dwarf commoner is enlightening, but that was not my point. I appreciate even love the differences between genres but I just dislike the way the elves look in the game.

There are People that find them attractive here. Regardless, humans in Thedas might find them attractive even if IRL many don't.

Aaaah mythology my subject. :)

even Tolken adapted elves from there Nordic and Celtic heritege as there were many many versions threwout history. from the Farie to Gnomes and even the freekin Smurfs.

So what if the DA version isn't the Tolken Elf neither are the Norse ones he was enspired from.. mind you haveing a boat that could be folded into my pocket..

(in you understood that + 50.)

Weren't elves pretty much considered little people or utterly spiteful before Tolkien and his contemporaries though? I do seem to remember they weren't all considered ethereal before hand, magical yes.

They're not 'supposed' to be anything.

in some cultures yes but look at the norse religions where the Elves and dwarves served and workrd whith the gods they were seen as human like.

and in some small and spitefull. one version of them has them have invisable backs. .

in Diskworld they look like Bushbabys.

I think it is great that elves are presented as much more ordinary indigenous/working class. The noble savage trope is much less interesting.

Seems like the elves are the only hot guys ( i loved Zev in bed lol), all the others are too jock looking.   Well, except for Cole, and for some reason, I can't hook up with him :-(

I loved how Dragon Age took a different outlook on some more typical fantasy tropes like Mages and Elves.

When I first played DA, Harry Potter was still fresh in my mind. Magic was a quirky fun little tool most of the time... And seeing mages in DA become ticking time bombs and demonic bait freaked me out a little. Same with the Elves: I only knew elves from Lotr. I loved the typical Elf (As you described them) so seeing them reduced to bitter bandits living in the woods or second-class mistreated peasants living in alienages was even more shocking.

I really like it when stuff takes some archetype and puts a little spin on it.

Tolkien elves are nicely written in The Hobbit (where they dwell in caves in the woods and are as petty as anyone else) and the Silmarillion, where they are high and mighty but make many huge mistakes that end with their civilizations in tatters, and that's not when they simply turn into traitors or murderous jerkbags. It's only in LOTR that they are the super special sparkly perfectly boring master race.

I like what DA has done with elves overall. I do think they look way to thin in Inquisition. Body types differing from human norms I can understand, but they look almost freaky with their noodly limbs.

My favorite elves were Warhammer's space elves, the Eldar. Though basically regular elves in many ways their flavor is pretty distinct and I think that's more important than appearances. I don't mind DA's elves but I wish they had stronger cultural and racial distinctions. Right now (and this is a problem across other races in many, many media) they're just a variation of humans that look different.  Disappointing, especially since, like the Eldar, the dalish have a history of falling from greatness and struggling in a universe seeping through their fingers.

I'll never quite understand why people think Tolkien's Elves are supposed to be some 'perfect' master race. They are a failing people in LotR and we see just how dysfunctional they can be in Silmarillion. Just because LotR Elves were used as some base standard afterwards and completely Flanderized, this trope isn't Tolkien's fault.

That said, I like DA Elves. I like them because they go against the grain of Elves being the older, better species and takes the fall of Elves and the Dominion of Man (concepts from Tolkien) to their logical end - elves as stateless nomads and virtual slaves, their grand culture and technology lost and almost a myth. Honestly, DA's world is pretty cliche in toto; what makes it different are how these archetypal races and people are treated differently.

I never said i hated them or that they were perfect people. simply that i prefere the DA depiction as a smaller race that is an underdog over the Legolas type. who can make the Green arrow look like a darts player.

For some reason elves should be more suave and wicked instead of just being boring cliche mages.
