For some reason elves should be more suave and wicked instead of just being boring cliche mages.
Garahel in other words.

wait
wut?
I may be wrong but I got the impression that the elves were supposed to be eye candy in the game? The books, etc all go on about how beautiful they are and how the humans lust after them? it just seems strange they would be described like that then look like they do is all I'm saying. Not that the Devs have to make the elves like every other universe/genre depiction of elves.
The devs do when the devs depict the elves as being unusually attractive, which the DA devs do.
To be fair, it isn't easy making an attractive elf in the DA:O creator, especially when the creator gives the elves really weird bone structures. According to the creator, elves should be both thin and big boned.
I'll never quite understand why people think Tolkien's Elves are supposed to be some 'perfect' master race. They are a failing people in LotR and we see just how dysfunctional they can be in Silmarillion. Just because LotR Elves were used as some base standard afterwards and completely Flanderized, this trope isn't Tolkien's fault.
That said, I like DA Elves. I like them because they go against the grain of Elves being the older, better species and takes the fall of Elves and the Dominion of Man (concepts from Tolkien) to their logical end - elves as stateless nomads and virtual slaves, their grand culture and technology lost and almost a myth. Honestly, DA's world is pretty cliche in toto; what makes it different are how these archetypal races and people are treated differently.
Tolkin is kinda contradicting himself in LOTR. On the one hand, the elves are declining, going West, have little influence, are shut off from the world, etc.
On the other hand, they're the most beautiful, skilled, crafty, wise, and intelligent of all the peoples of Middle-Earth. They barely tire, have the most beautiful voices, build the most beautiful things, live for eras, can heal most corruptions, have the only uncorrupted Rings, are universally good people. Hell, the golden standard for what it means to be cool in Middle-Earth is to be like the elves, and the most Elven blood Men have, the greater, more handsome, wiser, more skilled etc. they are. It seems like their only failing is that they can't be bothered to get off their ass, have children and rebuild their glory instead of sitting there lamenting their losses.
In short, LOTR elves are boring as ****. I love Tolkien in general, I hate his elves in LOTR. I much, much prefer DA's elves. The Eldar from WH40K are also nice, if a bit too dickish but then again it's 40K.
I only have a problem with the design, the lore as far as I am concerned is awesome. What surprised me was however that Solas character model looked great, and what I had expected the inquisitor to look like as well.
Solas looks lithe, nimble and agile, but unfortunately it seems that we get skinny Joe-elf, who has to get Cass to carry him when his legs are craping, poor skinny Joe boo hoo:(.
*cramping
Still not a patch on Will Ferrel.
I would prefer the beautiful ethereal Elves of legend,.... don't care for the anorexic weird bodies in DA2 and DA:I .... But beauty is, as they say, in the eyes of the beholder so for those that like the DA:I style ... enjoy!
Like the Dòkkàlar and the Ljósàlfar?
bzzzzzzzzt wrong, beauty standards are not entirely socialy constructed and said arguments are hardly quasi-biological, there are a specific arrangments of facial and bodily feautures that are considered more attractive, with science to back it. I dont understand why people *need* to believe this kind of phony and idealistic bs. Your theories are based on feminism, socially "scientific" philosophy and new age nonsense, If anything is *quasi*, they are.
Yes there is biology involved but it sure changes over the times and cultures, so in the end is a mix of all and personal perceptive. First time I saw Cassandra I found her one of the most attractive of the cast but the forum was flowed with complains about her appearance, beauty can indeed be subjective whatever you like it or not.
I really do not get the whole feminism theories things, please provide some source.
I'll say it first before a moderator does, "this will not end well...".

Exactly thr freekin F word has popped up.

at least this is a rare one...
Ok would you lot like Dark elves in DA?
Ok would you lot like Dark elves in DA?
we already have dwarfs. ![]()
for that matter we have angry "evil" elves too. so I think we got their story role already.... and we don't need drizzt ripoffs in da. love the character but all the ripoffs in any D&D game with drow gets annoying.
If the ancient elves return in game (conjecture) what would they look like, I'd love to expand the mythology of game to have another darker race of elves appear and by darker I mean theologically or ideologically . Way cooler than anything I could think of the way things stand.
Se thats what i was thinking whith the Dòkkàlar.
Dark elves are bad ass, look at Drizzt.
Now that's an elf, maybe when DAI male elves go into adolescence they will be as cool as him:D
I just don't want to hear my inquisitors voice crack when he's yelling at Orleasians.
Because not every single person in media needs to be physically attractive? Had BW ascribed to this when designing the species in Mass Effect, it would have been 75% more boring.
Plus, there are people who do find DA elves attractive. I think Fenris, Lia, Jethann, and Merrill were all well-designed. Did they look like humans? No. But they're striking. I think the same thing IRT Solas, who has a very interesting face. Sera is adorable, and some of the custom elves we've seen in streams are also pretty.
I like that BW tries to do something different with elves. I'm not 100% comfortable with the depiction of female elves in the lore, and I do think the DAI elves are way too reedy, but overall they have done something different and I think it works.
You've gotta be kidding about Mass Effect. They had an entire race that were blue skinned bombshells.
It's not really contradiction, and it's not limited to the elves -- the entire Tolkien's world (except maybe hobbits) is in decline from the good old times. The elves might've fallen the most, but because they were sooooo much better than anyone else to begin with, they are still way up there on the top.Tolkin is kinda contradicting himself in LOTR. On the one hand, the elves are declining, going West, have little influence, are shut off from the world, etc.

they also had big stupid jellyfish... though I suppose some are in that going by hentai... you're telling vorcha aren't fair ugly?
they had one pretty race not counting human.... the horror.

One race (two if you count the Quarians) out of how many? My point was that had they decided that every race included in Mass Effect had to fit our current (and rather narrow) standards for attractiveness, there would have been a lot less variety.
Almost everything is stolen from somewhere, Tolkien based alot of his stuff of the nordic mythologi, and they in turn borrowed alot from the old celtic mythologies etc etc. I think its better to just jump into works of fiction and try not to compare them to other works of fiction or you're going to ruin the fun for yourself.
Me too. I actually don't like elves being portrayed as beautiful humans with pointy ears though I understand why some artist stick with it. I loved what the Bethesda team did to the elves in Skyrim and what Bioware did in DA2. It made them seem like an entirely different species. And before anyone goes into the whole, "But humans lust after them," look at the Asari in Mass Effect. You can understand why humans are interested in them (given as they are only blue human girls with tentancles for 'hair'), but it extends to the other races as well including: Krogan, Turian, Quarian, etc. I even think that it mentioned somewhere in the series (could be wrong), that the Vorcha can be attracted to the Asari. Why? They look nothing like these races. And yet they have some quality about them that makes them beautiful to all the races (could be mind control
) that is never actually explained. It just happens. Same with the elves. They may not look like humans, but there is apparently a quality that makes them irresistible to some people.
Does anyone else hate the way elves are depicted in the series, I mean they are supposed to be graceful, etherial beautiful mythic beings not the spindly pidgeon chested things they now look like in games two and three of series.
