The way elven nation depicted in Bioware universe is rather suits this particular fantasy world so called “dark” nature. Actually, elves here were/are pretty much in the same state as in Witcher-sereis (both books and games). Once great nation, now driven to the brink and divided in two groups – city dwellers and forest “wildlings” (though, in Witcher world they are treated with more respect). Though, there is sort-of-third group and it’s nothing like previous two – but it’s kinda spoiler. This third one is, actually, rather similar to how entire elven people were described in Terry Pratchett “Lord and Ladies” novel – an arrogant immortal species from other dimension, skilled in magic with somewhat nazi-like attitude to “untermensch”-species – and that will be basically anyone who is not an elf.

Does anyone else hate the way elves are depicted in the series, I mean they are supposed to be graceful, etherial beautiful mythic beings not the spindly pidgeon chested things they now look like in games two and three of series.
I like the knife ears in Dragon Age, and I think there's a lot of potential for the series to use the Dalish and Alienage elves in a story about the end, or a new beginning for their race.
Same with the Dwarves, both races are in untenable situations. Dwarves face extinction by Darkspawn and the Elves eternal slavery and exile.
In as far as their physical appearance, I like how much different they are than humans, I don't really want to be mistaken for a human when I'm playing one.

Dark elves are bad ass, look at Drizzt.
Now that's an elf, maybe when DAI male elves go into adolescence they will be as cool as him:D
I just don't want to hear my inquisitors voice crack when he's yelling at Orleasians.
He's a Mary Sue if I ever saw one.
Dragon Age already met it's required elven Mary Sue with Fiona, we don't need no Drizzt impostors around here!
Yet another reason it's a good thing warriors can't dual wield anymore.

Well the elves are much improved in DAI compared to DA2. DA 2 elves were a monstrosity, their appearance felt forced like Bioware was trying to hard to make them look different. I can appreciate the new design in DAI, but I still don't care for how skinny both male and female elves are appearing to look.

normally I would disagree with warrior losing DWing being a good thing but if it keep the drizzt ripoffs to a minimum I'm good without it.
and wow someone using that term correctly, good job, I approve! ![]()

i find it perplexing how you preachy, hippie "friends of the world" "lets all hold hands and sing kumbaya around a campfire" types are fine with these elves looking like they were raised in a concentration camp and even go on about how tragically "romantic" and "beautiful" it is *gag*.To be honest this isnt that big of a deal to me, im going make a gorgeous elf, either way, even if her body looks a tad bizarre and undernourished, the most important thing to me is the face. I feel sorry for the people hoping to play a male elf... thinking they would actually get to play an adult male, and not a 13 yr old boy who looks like he's been starved and tortured his entire life. Considering his complete lack of musculature, Its a surprise hes even able to stand up, let alone carry a large sword in his hands tbh. Yes im well aware that there are people who look this look.. or what little there is of it.

In the books it has been said that human and elven offspring look human? And that Alistair is elf blooded? If this is so and the game says something or someone is returning to what they once were ..(conjecture) magic and imortality to the elves what effect could this have on the elf blooded.??
To quote Varric Alistair could be a very special snowflake indeed.

"13 yr old boy"? Please. The elves look more like regular humans* than actual DA humans do. Not in the least because human males in computer games tend to come with physique exaggerated to the point it'd make Arnold in his prime weep in frustration.I feel sorry for the people hoping to play a male elf... thinking they would actually get to play an adult male, and not a 13 yr old boy who looks like he's been starved and tortured his entire life. *) regular humans as in people you actually get to see on the street, not the "Hollywood plain" types.

I was aware that the male elf looks a little weird. Is this also true for the female elf? I had rather hoped female elves would look pretty normal.

They're elves. They're not supposed to look like anything, they're not real.
I like the look of the DA elves, in that they look like an actual other race. I'm fond of the alien DA2 facial structure for the same reason. Sure, they're super skinny -- and the qunari look like they live off egg yolk and chicken, and dwarves are short. Cause they're not human. (I'm way more freaked out by Iron Bull's massive pecs than by elven noodle arms tbh, although I have pretty noodly arms myself so my frame of reference is sort of screwed)
I'm surprised to read they're intended by the devs to be ethereally beautiful though? Did I skim through a codex page too quickly or something, because I never got that impression from the games...

If you as a human look like that, you would be undernourished.
I have the same frame as the human male, and I am by far not the biggest dude I know.
Am I fit? absolutely, but if I spent my life fighting like they do I would be a hell of a lot more fit.

Left: DAI elf. Right: actual human being.
Yup, that's sure what an undernourished guy or 13 yr old boy looks like.
Let's have him take off shirt to make sure.

They don't share the equipment. On the posted videos their body models look close enough, taking into account variation of worn garnments (starting gear for the inquisitor looks tighter than Solas' vest but that's about it)Solas and the male elf inquisitor doesn't share body model. The only things elves are supposed to do regardless of the setting is frolicing and gushing over their pointed ears.

As I still intend to play as a elf (Dalish mage because it wasn't available on 360) I still cringe looking at how disproportionate and pathetically thin the elf body type is. I've seen people with this build and all have been unwell, its not a healthy body type to promote even saying its a race that doesn't exist.
And why do they have to be slight and shorter, in some mythology they are tall and athletic of build.

*tmp7704 I started that thread and admittedly I know nothing about the development of the game, however it's my understanding that the devs. haven't said anything about the process of going from design to production (don't know if they use Maya or 3DS Max or if they have an in house development kit) but if you have heard about this process you are welcome to enlighten me.
This has become a much bigger issue(which seems silly) I know that it seems they don't share the same model, and I (in my personal taste) don't find the dude appealing(some might, I don't) as I think he has more in common with a bucket of chicken wings, then a badass elven ranger.
