Riiiight. I've been near rats and there's nothing cute about them or their behavior.

The hyperbole is strong with this one.

Elves are not humans. What is skinny for us is not necessarily so for them. A greyhound will be perfectly healthy at a weight which would imply serious starvation in a mastiff.

Hmm, I would say the problem is the arms and the shoulders. Solas actually looks alright but as some have pointed out he is almost as tall as a human and all the companions have custom builds, Sera also looks a lot better than the regular female. I wouldn't say that the male elves look like twelve year old boys, they look more like those teenage boys who are very skinny due to incredibly high metabolism. I know because my brother has a build like that and he certainly doesn't look ill. This might be a bit of a problem for anyone who wishes to make an elf that looks over the age of twenty but from the videos I have seen the elves various players have made looked fine to me. DA2 had the same problem but it was worse, Fenris and Merrill looked ok apart from the weird arms and long necks but Marethari looked like an old woman with a little girls body. I would have made the shoulders a bit broader and the arms a bit thicker especially on the female, that would have allowed for more more verity in what you can create without it looking a bit weird. On the upside armour seems to play a big role, they look wrong in some armours but pretty good in others. What with the deep customization it shouldn't be too much trouble to create armours that your elf looks good in. I still prefer this design over the designs in the last two games.

you are obviously very limited in your ability to understand. Ive posted long enough and have been lurking around these boards long enough before that, to know the mindset that permeates it, and who posts what. There's lots of wannabe intellectuals, self-assessed "deep" philosophers and progressives here, not the least of whom are responding to this thread, who fancy themselves some kind of "hero the people". Who in one breath profess visual preference for anorexic and tortured looking people, while in the other are preaching against racism, lookism and oppressive beauty standards that are based on extreme thinness, and how beauty is a social thing and how we are beautiful on the inside yada yada yada. Why do i get the sense that you are one of these people, or maybe a hippie, who took offense to my little jab? Im well aware of my tone but i couldnt care less what you or anyone else thinks about it. Dont like it? Put me on ignore or dont read it, simple as that.

"anorexic"? "Tortured looking"? I'll grant that both those descriptions could accurately be applied to Orana, a slave, most of the other elves don't look nearly as bad. Merrill, for example, has quite a pretty face. Yes, all elves are thin, but that's because they were intended to look inhuman in the first place. They hardly look like they've been living in a concentration camp.

I think you might be assuming too much here. Most people on the internet end up falling into the "wannabe intellectual" category because people generally think they are intelligent and that they have the correct view. You are no different and when you made claims about someone else's views being based on "pseudo-intellectualism" and someone queried that claim, you did not respond to them.

Sure many of the ideas about beauty standards, gender roles and social constructs do come from feminism and people do often put a lot of stock in these ideas even though many of them aren't all that substantial and some just completely go against well established science (like the idea that sexual dimorphism is a myth). That doesn't mean they are all wrong though, the fact of the matter often is that we just don't know yet. Some beauty standards are social constructs, we know this because they have changed over time and change from society to society. Preference is also a big factor and that in itself is a result of many other factors some of these factors obviously are social. Pointing this stuff out doesn't suddenly make you a feminist hippy, it also doesn't mean your opinions are based on crazy feminist theories,

Yeah, so how about those lithe pointed-eared people who excel at poverty?

Man, who cares about any of that crap? At least the elves don't look like James Cameron's moon cat smurfs anymore.

Because elves are considered humanoids in DA. So technically they should have human characteristics.

First off, again, There are humans IRL who are very skinny, and not necessarily because they're sick or malnourished.
Second, qunari are a humanoid species as well, and they have horns. Being humanoid doesn't means they have to share every human characteristic.

Ok would you lot like Dark elves in DA?

I definitely would, considering we already have Wood el~uh, Dalish elves. And the opposite of High elves in most human cities. Besides, if we are really having alien-looking elves, I would take an honestly alien grey skin over a confusing hybrid between human and Avatar the movie

I actually like the way male elves look in game but to each their own.

As they are not human it seems of limited use to compare them to real world men, but what the hell:

Spoiler

Not to everyone's tastes, but certainly considered attractive by some. In terms of actual people these guys are little too skinny for my taste but for some reason I'm fine with it on elves. No idea why.

p.s. I firmly believe posting images of hot swimmers makes your arguments far stronger people. Even if the addition of a hot swimmer doesn't seem like it would relate to, or improve, what you're saying - it will :P

Elves are a mythical race, so you can make them however you like when you write a story (or make a game/movie, etc.).

In my opinion, though, I don't really see the point in making them "more human" as recent companies (like BioWare and Bethesda) do. Having them be ethereal/majestic makes them more unique and different from humans, in my opinion, and I think it fits better for the most part.

That said, I still like these elves that are less "graceful" and will always play an elf character when given a choice, regardless. I like the "Tolkien-type" elves better. That doesn't mean that they fit better in Dragon Age/The Elder Scrolls/whatnot; that's up to the writers/creators to decide. I may not have personally made the same choices, but it ends up working rather well anyway. I'm happy enough to see elves at all.

Dragon Age/The Elder Scrolls/The Lord of the Rings aside, I'm personally presently writing a novel-series with an elf as the hero (something you rarely see, actually). I'm sort of sad to hear that so many people like the fallen/weak/slave/etc. elves better that graceful/ethereal/mystical/etc. elves, but it's nice that there are still some who do still like the latter. :)

As you put it, "you seem to want see things that arent there".

Try this:

or this:

Human males don't all look like computer game characters with proportions of a barrel on two legs? Unconceivable.

Next up: breaking news, games rumoured to exaggerate proportions of women.

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that the elves have to have pointed ears and be humanoid in appearance.

By this token does that mean the Elves and Qunari are somehow related in the DA universe? both are humanoid and have pointed ears?

I for one would be intrigued to see a connection between these two races in Thedas. And at least the Qunari are given a healthy body type.

And why can't elves have tails and be twenty feet tall (Avatar) if we are saying there doesn't have to be a stereotypical depiction of elves in games, bring it on I say, just make them look healthy.
