EA! Are you reading this? There is a opportunity to make more $$$$$$$   ;)

Just release your games at the same time worldwide  B)

That would increase your digital sales!

Note that only applies to unlocking the game early via VPN. If you use VPN to connect to a different regional store to purchase a game cheaper, the issue might be different and not in your favour.

EA should be thankful people are using Origin direct to buy games at all.

Without getting into a debate about the price of games because some people here would defend any price put on a Bioware game but £60 for a game is extortionate in my opinion, especially when the same game can be picked up from other regional stores for under half that price.

With Mass Effect they had an update to cancel out VPN connections with origin.

Try it out tho

Almost impossible to do so.

Anyone that has little knowledge of networking will be able to establish a VPN without EA able to block it out.

Well, pick it up from your other regional stores. I occasionally use product key vendors to get some games cheap myself.

The problem is when people use VPN to buy a game for relatively dirtcheap from another regional Origin store, stuff like this is what can happen.

You don't go travelling to India to buy a game on a retail store for cheap, don't you?

So just to query something as I can't remember if ME3 had a pre-download date. Will people in EU and non-US/Canada locations be able to do the 14th download without any 'issues' occurring? I'm thinking in regards to whether Origin will take the money pre-14th no matter where you are?

I don't know, for me it means you will have to be connected to a VPN during the preload and for the activation.

Or it would go like Connect to VPN > Preload > Get Origin in offline mode > Connect to VPN > Activate > Offline again? :S

Good point, on another note can someone confirm what the time is for the US/Korean pre-download on the 14th?

Not really impossible from a software perspective. If origin decided to use server time based on the location of the account, they would only accept connections according to geography and not IP.

I remember using a VPN and being locked out when ME came out. This was after an update

Fair warning for people like me who love achievements, just play through the VPN for the few days while it's unreleased, if you go to offline mode or something you probably won't get achievements, happened to me on steam at least.

personally with this stuff i will play it safe anyways, i will just keep being connected to the VPN to play.

WTB [Simultaneous Release Dates for Digital Purchases], thanks!

Living in the ass end of europe VPN sounds intriguing. Nigh three days is a lot, a damn lot, people could finish game twice over in that time. Sure, there might be release-bugs to be ironed out but still.

Though, can't say I find it very appealing idea of my account information flowing through some server...

MeerMusik posted this great tutor yesterday.

http://forum.bioware...2#entry17662221

Well, this actually worked. My pre-load time stayed the same but now I actually get "November 17th, 12:00" for download.

Go Korea, I guess!

Sorry for bumping a dying thread but I think people oughta be aware of this.

Out of doubt I contacted EA customer service, this is part of the transcript: (Copy+Paste)

---

you: Frankly, is it against any terms of service or policies to skip my countrys release date by connecting via VPN?
you: That said I have already bought the game and intend to preload it normally.
Neeraj: I am sorry to say it is against our terms of services
Neeraj: We don' t recommend to do that
Neeraj: I am sorry to say our TOS team take action against who use VPN

---

I dont think I will risk it just for two days. Even if thursday is not good for me. :/

Funny that support says that considering it doesn't say its illegal in their Terms of Service.

Steam on the other hand does have it in their TOS.

I can't believe that ten years after the simultaneous worldwide release of Half-Life 2, we are still in an age where retail release dates are king.

Yes, 2 or 3 days is nothing in the grand scheme, but there is absolutely no reed for it. Time to tell retail to get bent.

I'm of the considered opinion that it's time to tell Digital Distribution to get bent. After all, aren't we basing this solely on our preferred method of purchase, and mine is hard copies. It does seem to me, however, that if HL2's release was so successful, everyone would have jumped on the bandwagon. Since they didn't, maybe there are things we just don't know? Like, instead of moving the UK release date back for simultaneous release, they pushed everyone else's release up to the UK release date? Maybe they caught 100 times more flak for that than staggering the release.

Yes, well, I guess it's entirely in the realm of possibility that support didn't know and just played it "safe". :P

Frankly I haven't found it in the ToS either. Yet.

Support doesn't seem to know much. It varies from person to person.

I'm just gonna use VPN anyway. If they ban me then whatever, they aren't gonna take your games away.

The Terms of Service has the following in it, which could be considered a catch all that could partially cover a case like this

11. Rules of Conduct

You may violate the Terms of Service if, as determined by EA in its sole discretion, you:

...

- Attempt to use EA Software on or through any service that is not controlled or authorized by Electronic Arts. Any such use is at your own risk and may subject you to additional or different terms. EA takes no responsibility for your use of EA Software on or through any service that is not controlled by Electronic Arts.

...

Also...

- “Role–playing” is not an excuse for violating this or any other policy.

Ha! :D

It all seems a bit vague doesn't it? All-in-all, proceed with your own discretion.

Well, they aren't that useless. Different countries have different holidays, etc. pp. that make a significant impact on how products sell. Releasing something after a holiday is bad, releasing something during a holiday is stupid and all that.

I do concur however that digital releases should be simultanous, so people can play the game at their earliest convinience if they have the time for it. Would also be a great marketing strategy to promote digital distribution if say EA's Origin releases its games simultanous instead of stacked.

Then the business at retail stores would go down.

So it really is just an out-dated thing? Its not really any legal or other factors involved in publishers allowing same-time release digitally?

I linked this article in a different thread:

Yes, it's legal.

Aside from the legality, it's also not forbidden in their terms of use I think. They don't want you to use a VPN to get cheaper prices obviously, but otherwise it doesn't mention it.

Even if it were "forbidden" in there though, you bought the game and that's that. It doesn't become illegal because an EULA or TOS doesn't want you to do it.

From what I read in the ToS you are allowed to purchase\use origin games only while using valid account which notifies in which country you live and also in that case you need the game to be available in your country.

Use of VPN itself is legal in most countries. EA ToS is a bit vague in this matter, but just enough clear that if you screw something up, you can't blame them.

One support guy says one thing. Next one says another and gives a discount.

Even though i'm not familiar with American legal system, if you get a game with cheaper prices, only lawful thing they can do is to remove the game from your library and refund your money.

For playing it early: i can't even think anything remotely illegal about.

This is pretty much how it's going to be. Definitive "proof" one way or the other is not going to be given. But the fact that countless people use VPNs to acces games early and don't get banned says enough that i can personally make an informed decision.
