No, you should be able to import newly created characters.

I was worried because of this:
Data from Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II is now read-only on the BSN. You will no longer see any new custom Dragon Age heroes, achievements and entitlements appear. Your data is being transferred to the Dragon Age Keep.
How exactly will my new warden appear if the data is read-only from now on?

By starting a new playthrough you'll get your wardens face and name in the keep, but you'll have to set up the choices yourself.
If you only want to import your choices, then yes, you are wasting your time. If you want to refresh your memory about the events of Dragon Age, or just want to play the game, then no, you are not wasting your time.

BSN doesn't store information there anymore, it redirects it into the Keep so you don't have to worry about your new characters not showing up.

Three weeks ago I started a new DA:O (plus dlc and DA:A) and then DA2 game. I started this not realising that my saves won't be imported as I had this weird idea that my saves would be imported into the keep. But, when the keep became open beta and I read that my saves won't be imported I was like "ah crap" but, at the end of the day I'm glad I played the games as it was a good reminder of the story and my new warden and hawke that I just completed will be my save that I will import into DA:I first.
So it wasn't a waste of time in that regard.

No because Dragon Age: Origins is a fantastic game and well worth your playthrough.
