I just recently came back to DA:O as I'm replying both DA:O and DA2 to prepare for DA:I.

After getting to Landsmeet I became curious about something. What happens if my female warden decides to marry Alistair, but Alistair dies while slaying the archdemon? Does that mean my warden will be sole queen? Or will Anora return to rule?

Anora will return to rule. You'll need (a living) Alistair to be queen.

It makes sense considering you and Alistair won't have gotten hitched until after the battle. Poor Lady Cousland.

Yep. Doesn't really make sense though, because Cousland has a better blood claim to the throne. Anoras' only claim to the throne is by marriage, and that she was sitting on it.

How so?  Both are daughters of teyrn's so both would have roughly the same education.  However Anora is older and far more experienced in politics and how Ferelden court works.  She also has the advantage of already being the queen.  I really don't see any advantage the Cousland would have over Anora other than one is liked by this forum and the other not so much.

It's true that Anora is the daughter of a Teryn, but Teryn of Gwaren and Teryn of Highever aren't exactly...comparable. Not to mention that while Loghain is indeed the Hero of the Riverdane, he's still a commoner in the eyes of many nobles, whereas the Couslands have been around for centuries.

Many evoke Anora's merits, but this isn't a society based on merit alone. It's based on blood as well, along with precedent. Being married does not automatically make one part of the royal family. If Anora had a child, it might be different, but she did not. And besides, many say that Anora is capable, but I simply do not see it. Experience does not always impart wisdom.

It does help though to have experience

Having Cousland put on the throne except through marriage would almost certainly have led to a war of succession, and we all know, with the Darkspawn threat, that's the last thing we'd want. The Landsmeet seems to me to be traditionalists above all. While we could manage to get unanimous support against Loghain, those still didn't count for more than that. The Cousland family wasn't friends with, or even trusted by, every other major family. Certainly not after the affair with the Howe family. Remember that, if the Warden is not a Cousland, Arl Howe succeeds, and would have gotten away with it if he hadn't been in the way.

A war of succession is almost inevitable in every case, Cousland or not, unless Alistair takes the throne (which is odd in of itself, because son of Maric or not, he is a bastard. That creates a dangerous precedent for who is eligible). Ferelden monarchy is partly determined on a vote from every noble in the Landsmeet, who will almost certainly put forward their own cause. But who has the best blood claim out of all of them?

Fergus seems to survive no matter which Origin is chosen, according to some slides in Awakening and codexes in Witch Hunt. If Anora rules alone, I really can't see why she wouldn't re-marry immediately to secure her position, yet she does not do so. Another strike against her.

There is no reason for her to rush into another marriage unless there is something to gain from it.  She only agrees to marry Alistair or Cousland to secure our vote to keep her in power.  She even states she is not willing to play second fiddle anymore.  I actually found it pretty unbelievable that no one else threw their hat into the leadership mess at the Landsmeet.   I can understand why to keep the game moving but if that were RL it wouldn't have been settled that quickly or peacefully.
