Just making sure.

Redid the first hug. Still not quite what I want it to be, but it's MUCH better than all my previous attempts, so I think I'm going to stick with it. Time for a shower, and then on to shading.

MUCH better. I actually didn't redraw a lot; I just moved their heads to different angles and redid his arm/robes. Woot for vector graphics and digital art! They make goof-up fixing a LOT easier...

Well, I'm almost finished with the next one, which was with the blood splatter. I just have to play around with some coloration/saturation levels.

Fourth done. I'm pretty happy with this one, even though I cheated on the background a bit - I ganked it from an older Legam/Leliana fan art. But it worked well for this piece, so I decided to use parts of it here.

Sixth done. If you guys thought the flats one was unpleasant... Well, let's just say I'm artistically satisfied with it from a color manipulation and execution of details standpoint. As a Leliana fan though, I think I might actually hate myself a little.

Seventh done. Two more to go before the bottom comic panels. I'm going to try and see if I can finish all the flashback ones tonight, because tomorrow I have to work on my comic page for Monday's update... Also, I'm apparently watching Gran Turino at some point tomorrow, too. My dad and brother are sort of forcing me into it because they've been bugging me to watch it for a while now. I don't doubt it's a good movie, but... for those kinds of films, I have to be in the right mood to really enjoy them, so I watch them when I'm ready. I don't like getting forced into it. Harumph.

Three things to saw about those last four: Incredible, moving, and heart-wrenching all at the same time. Normally I don't visit here often, but these recent drawings have caught me by surprise to say the very least, it's a clever artistic insight into Orlesian culture.

You did a fantastic job in the previous improved pics as well, in breif they're all fantastic!!

Gruesome picture. It makes me sad, uncomfortable and even angry at being unable to stop it. (the torture) 
It gets even more gruesome when you put the linesfrom your fanfiction next to it: Unspeakable pain. The authorities of Orlais knew the art of torture well. Days, weeks passed in dank cells far below the surface, beyond the Maker's warm light. Each hour filled with a new, ungodly torment. Lashings, finger breakings, dislocations and resettings, limb-stretchings; tortures Leliana knew no name for…

Not far from my house is a historical museum about prisons. I have been there many times and thus know more than I want to know about how 'inventive' our acestors were in thinking of news to torture people.

With this, and the lines from your story, in mind, I can imagine what this character must have gone through.

But in the end I do not hate this picture. I like it in the same way that I like a good drama film. It envokes an emotional response.  And that is what art is all about.

That's some damn fine panels, going from the light and fluff of Orlaisian high life to the darkness of prison, torture and exile. Geat composition.

@Maximus: Thank you, glad to know I'm getting the emotional response that I intended. These are part of a larger piece though - one for a DA:O club contest. I'm not at all concerned about winning, but the contest was run with the concept "a leopard cannot change its spots" and I immediately thought of Leliana and her guilt/worry that she's just like Marjolaine... It's a concept I wanted to explore, so I went ahead and started working on it.

@Apophis: I don't live near any museums, but I'm a big history buff - especially ancient civilizations, feudal Japan, the Dark Ages, and ancient warefare - so I too know a lot about the horrible things human beings can and have done to each other. I find it interesting from an academic standpoint, but morally abhorrent. Glad my knowledge of the darker side of humanity worked for the art there.

Leliana never elaborates how badly she was tortured, but I think her tone of voice/expression in the game said enough. Some fans find it logical to conclude she was likely raped as well, and while that's a reasonable conclusion to come to... As a woman, that's a subject I don't want to think about or come within ten miles of, so I left it out of my narrative/art. Guess I draw the line after a certain point in terms of provoking negative emotions.

@Olwaye: Thanks. Hopefully they will all come together in the final page well. I just finished the last flashback panel, so I'm going to fiddle around with them together on the main art file and see if I can get the final flow of them down - or at least started - before I go to bed. Depends on how long it takes to do.

Montage is finished. Overall... Not quite the flow I wanted, but... Pretty damn close. That's good.

I had much the same feeling when she talked about it.  I was glad she didn't go into detail and I don't like imagining her being tortured...

The pictures, while disturbing in nature, are just beautifully done.  I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Me neither. I much prefer the vagueness of her description. Sometimes it makes me wonder if she has any physical scars from it, though. Mental, sure, but usually if one's horribly tortured, there are often physical marks from it. It's not something often, if at all, tackled in fan fiction/art from what I've seen.



Poor Leli. I look forward to shading the hug pictures.



As I said earlier, hopefully I can finish it today. We're apparently going clothes shopping earlier, and since I plan on drawing that comic during Gran Turino, I'm going to take advantage of whatever time I have now and start shading.

That looks really nice!  I like how the montage turned out too.  The one with the rain is my favorite.  You did a great job on the storm in that one.
