I knew what you meant, I was just being specific/a smart ass. You know us Americans.
I have to agree, though it's not just Dragon Age fanfiction that suffers from it - and there are Alistair fanfics that are well done/believable... They're just half-buried under all the other stuff. XD
See, for me - I have no problem showing the sensuality/sex side of a relationship, and I have no problem with bawdy humor. But, I think most of the strongest relationships are friends-first. Not necessarily friends-turned-lovers (though that is the case with Leliana and Legam), but lovers who are also friends and can simply enjoy each other's company/doing normal things together.
And in my experience, no matter how good the lust side of love can be, the happiest couples are those who genuinely care about the other person for who they are - faults and all, and not just for their sexual aspects. And they don't always get along. My parents have been married for 25 years - happily so - but I still see them bicker and disagree on a regular basis, yet I also see much that shows after all this time, they care a lot about each other. They're not openly sappy, but they do plenty of things for each other in little ways: like my father visiting my mother while she was in the hostipal recently (knee surgery) every night after work, and would stay for several hours to watch TV with her, just so she had the company. Heck, I'll go ahead and say it: They may both be past their mid-50s and my parents, but they're downright adorable in their own way. I'd ship them if they were fictional characters.
I guess in some ways my parents are a bit of an influence in how I tend to view good (in my opinion) romances. Er... Minus the sensual/sex side. I try not to think about that regarding them.
