I just started playing this game today, and while I'm enjoying it, I don't know how I'm going to get enough secrets/viands/trophies to get the "good" ending (45 or 50 now?). I'm playing the Scholar, and I'm doing well with keeping all of my stats high (prosperity, freedom, dignity, etc.) and my problems low (twilight, peril, etc.), but I suck at getting trophies/viands/secrets. I think I have three secrets (don't remember how I got them) and two trophies (one from the tutorial, and one from getting lucky during a hunt). No viands yet. Also, I'm finding it hard to get enough bags of royals and authority to get enough favors and such to get advisors, lovers, etc. And who are the best people to get? The only lover I've seen is The Wayward Bard, so unless someone else is an option, he's a given, but I don't know who to aim for with everyone else. *hangs head in shame at extreme suckiness*

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as I've never played this particular style of game before. And I'm far too broke in real life to spend money on Dawn, so that's not an option.

Don't worry about keeping all problems low. There are bonus options available when you let them get up to 100 that give Trophies, etc.

1 problem over 75 is fine, 2 gets dangerous.

Also, don't worry about keeping all kingdom stats high.

The game is, really, a mix between whack-a-mole and balancing.

Constantly gaining/spending kingdom stats for trophies, etc.

The other Lover is the Abbess, but there's a trick to her. You need to make her your Counselor first, then another favor (or 2?) to switch her to Lover.

Also,

If you *just* started playing, don't be afraid of the restart option.

Spending your 20 actions, restarting, spending 20 action, rinse, repeat isn't a bad way to get a handle on the game  ;)

The only other lover is the Abbess but she must become your counselor first. The best people to get depends on whether your a scholar or huntress. Each companion will mention what stat boosts they give so pay attention to that. As for the bags of royals, be on the look out for the card that mentions hoisting a ball/dance, I found that one to be the easiest to get bags of royals.

I have around twelve combined now.  I've only hunted once and only bought two.  You get a lot for doing the story.  I must have gained seven through my dealings with the horned knight alone.

Edit: I used up my 20 turns and now I'm up to 23 secrets/trophies/viands.  The story is where it's at.

Strategy guide time:

get your counselor/lover/accomplice/bodyguard slots filled ASAP

keep 1 of your positive traits low (5-20) as a dump stat that can be boosted cheaply with clues with some characters (knight can keep freedom between 5 and 20 easily and can be summoned in an emergency) to make sure it never reaches 0

convert this trait into the other traits at any possibility (except if doing so would put it to 0) and once they reach 100 convert them into Divine Items

keep a single negative stat very high and always try boosting it to get a super opportunity

Are there any drawbacks if I fail the 'super opportunity'? I am wondering since I have reached rumors of revolution at 90..

Yes.  I failed the 100 Peril challenge, which costs 5 authority.  Resulted in the loss of 5 authority, 20 peril, and health (I think 20 but can't confirm.)  I do not know the drawbacks of the other two challenges.  I was successful on the 100 Revolution challenge, which gave me a reward (I believe a secret?) and reduced Revolution by 50.

I believe these events have the largest pass-fail margin possible (difference of a trophy/viand/secret, 30 in the trouble stat, and health on at least the Peril option.)

Thas what I'm doing. I find it's best to keep Freedom low and boost the others, as Secrets tend to be fairly easy to come by. I have 4 market days left and already have 17 secrets.

Hunting has a crazy learning curve:  it's really tough at first (if you're the scholar) but gets progressively more easy as you do it, because your woodswise will eventually increase at a faster rate.  I started as the Scholar and my Woodswise is now 57, just from hunting.  I never paid clues to boost it or anything.  Once your Woodswise is about 35 or so, you'll succeed at hunting more often than you fail.  I can get a trophy/viand using only about 4-5 actions now.  Bring the hounds; I find they're much more helpful than the extra hour or whatever, even if you lose them along the way.

Ya I was basically at a 50/50 success rate for hunting at the beginning but now I haven't failed one yet as the Scholar and i only have 37 woodwise.  Just go into the Deepwoods.  I always get noisy because the act of getting it gives you like 4 "closing in" and the event you get when you have it is easily passed for even more closing in. Never go it alone though, not worth it.  Just building up trophies right now, not even bothering to do the regular cards except market day right now. Kind of worried about hunting deer though as I have a deal with the Horned Knight.

Actually, if you do the math you should realize that in order to get 15 of each you would have to spend  about 300 clues and 210 actions just on the hunting quests, (7 turns/quest and 100% success ratio), that’s about 4 days worth of ”free” actions (72/day).

At this point we still wouldn’t have any secrets or companions.

And most importantly, the entire game would be rather pointless since the reason we play it is for the story/lore, and not to grind the same 2 quests for 4 days.

You could say buy ”Dawn”, but in this case, who in their right mind would actually pay 2,5 USD/action.

Somehow I don’t think that the DA team would troll us that way. ;)

The thing is, some quests give you secrets and throphies and viands, so its not only hunting ;)

Yeah I definitely don't have the patience to play politics I much prefer going out,and doing actual hero work. B)  Is doing/beating this game necessary? The last new game I bought back in march had a similar thing, and that was a pain.

No it's 15 combined for a good ending, more for better endings.

"Hey there,

Sorry for the delayed response, I wanted to double check with the Failbetter devs so I know I'm giving the right answer.

It breaks down as this: you'll need at least 15 combined of secrets, viands and trophies to get a good ending. To get a better (or even the best) ending, you'll need more than that. So think of 15 as the minimum amount.

I hope that helps!"

The game ends once the Divine arrives at the end of the 7 Market Days.

From the FailBetter Tumblr, posted yesterday:

Most thorough and helpful advice for new Marquises!

One correction: the very best ending can be achieved with 30 Secrets, Viands and Trophies - not 50. This has been corrected within the game.

What if I reach the number of Trophies/Viands/Secrets I marked as my goal at the beginning before I use up the seven market days?

You'll still have to wait out the remaining days.

The game ends once the Divine arrives at the end of the 7 Market Days.

Could you clarify that? Does that mean that the Divine is the final Market Day card (say, "1 Day Left"), or does she come after all are done ("0 Days Left")? Is it immediate, or does it take place 24 hours later?

I haven't finished the game yet so I can't say for sure. Since the FAQ says the game takes approximately 7 days and there are 7 Market Day Cards I assume she comes after the Market Day Cards are all spent but not a full day later. But I'm just guessing here, you'd have to ask someone who's finished the game.

You get a market day card and then before you get any additional draws the Dvine shows up and you enter the final phase of the game.

I'm assuming all the accomplishments and story aspects get resolved further when the Divine visits...  If this is the case, we are informed as to what prior event the Divine is happy/angry/indifferent about, right?

What if I don't play for a day - will I have two Market Day cards when I log in?
