Just how essential is barrier going to be in this game? And spamming it over and over again.

Every time Neuromancer creates a thread, somewhere a Nug dies.

If you weren't spamming Barrier, it was gonna be health potions / spells. Plus it seems like there are other damage mitigation techniques in the game.

Let's stop flogging this dead horse huh?

More complaining. First it's no healing and now barrier's apparently being shoved down our throats. Do people really have nothing better to do then criticise elements of a game they haven't even played?

You get a mandatory barrier on upper difficulties and 8 ability restricioned UI. Every spell "tree" got passives based on barrier.

Way to make mages into a single spell spamming class.

What if I don't want those passives? Am I having it forced on me then?

You don't have to, but whole class is designed around one spell.

I'm a little confused how three passives in the 4 non-spirit trees (49 talents in total) that we know equals a whole class being built around one ability

Barrier is useful, but it doesn't look like it's essential. Warriors with taunt abilities and a steady stream of guard seem far more important to the group's survival.

there are also items that produce guard for none warriors, the devs in one of the twitch streams said, tough these items were rare and hard to find, but a mage who can generate guard wit a weapon will be vary powerful :o or even a rogue.

I'm going to go the CC/LoS route and avoid barrier as much as possible. Hopefully it works out because I really don't like the idea of spamming barrier over and over.

I don't think anyone is shoving anything, especially barrier, down any body's throat. Well. Last night maybe. But not right now. Well.

That said I don't particularly love that the spirit tree (arguably the most interesting, lore-wise, school of magic) and our only non elemental tree is designed around barrier production nor that barrier-dependent passives pop up in other trees, encouraging you to make 1/8th of your spell line-up. It feels like it's verging on being  a "core" mechanic of the class, so having one ability that focuses on it is a bit strange. There should be more ways to generate Barrier outside the Spirit tree if there are going to be barrier-dependent passives, just the spell Barrier should be the simplest, most reliable way to do so.

They also wrote, in The World of Thedas, that a magical item can never do anything a magic spell can't do.

Yeah. Seems so. Tell us one thing and show us the complete opposite 2 mins later.

I dunno, how important was having a healing mage or gobs of healing potions in the last two game?

How important was it to remove those, though? Nobody really complained about healing spells being in the games. People complained about the cartoony combat, however, and that only made them increase that factor.

How is this related to the item that grants guard? For that matter what would guard even translate into in the lore?

Potions for me were always important because I tended to play without a healer it made things harder on me most of the time but it was fun and I enjoyed the challenge. for DA:I I dunno yet I will have to play the game to find out :)

I'm speaking on higher difficulties of play.

Barrier works in a preemptive way of damage migation similar to how heal is a post-damage form of migating damage.

Will barrier thus be an essential part of the game? I see this almost being required to be spammed incessantly...

Preparing for large damage attack? Barrier.

Preparing to attack a group of enemies? Barrier.

Last barrier broke? Barrier.

Mage in sight? Barrier.

Ever not have barrier up? Barrier.

:/

Using Barrier is EVERYTHING a mage needs to have propped up. 52 hours into DA. :D

Because a mage can't use Guard. A magic item can do it, which the lore says is impossible. No idea what Guard would translate into in the lore. The lore is pretty much dead now, anyway. Riddled with holes.

Anyway, it is off topic.

It's essential enough but not as much as you think it is.

Hardly defying law* in my opinion. Besides guard is not magic, otherwise warriors wouldn't be able to do it.

*edit: my apologies, that's meant to be lore

Can anyone tell me if you can roll out of the way to avoid damage if you are fast enough, like in AC, Shadows of Mordor, Dark Souls?

In the two other Dragon Age games that wasn't the case.
