I am so happy I finally caved and watched the stream! Honestly, didn't ruin any big plot moments. I mean - yes - I now know how the first hour goes exactly but it's all plot set up we have all already known about for months. I had my hands over my mouth over half of it à la Stefon because I am just too excited for words.

I will say this.

In about forty years, Mike Laidlaw could leap down the chimneys of absolute strangers on Christmas Eve and be offered  milk and cookies for doing so.

Also, I am glad I watched this preview.

Inquisitor's one liners (a little bit long time to time, but generally around five words. I guess he/she started learning how to speak two months ago) and characters' bad lip syncing bother me a lot. Character animations look stiff and wonky during dialogue scenes. In-game combat animations look smooth though.

Anyone else feel this opening went way too quick? A lot is covered in the hour, and not nessecarily for the better; it does in that hour what DA:O took 2-3 with the opening and Ostagar. I really think that Conclave prologue they considered but cut really would of helped ground the pacing a bit.

The good

Start is epic and the establishment of the inquisition very uplifting so I expect the storytelling in general will be very good.

Varric......... nuff said

Solas - so he is there at the start I hope we find out why he was there.

Cassandra looks fantastic

The Bad

Lip synching and mouth animations are poor just as they were in earlier versions

Some of the general movement animations are a bit stiff

Lastly Josie was there at the end but we didn't hear her speak unfortunately.

From the sounds of it, the devs decided against adding it because they wanted a more immediate feeling.  Since the PC doesn't know what is going on they wanted to impart this feeling to the player as well, by just throwing you in.  Just like the PC has been.  If I as the player knew what was going on because I had played the Conclave, but the PC doesn't remember this would create some jarring moments that would throw me out of the story (just my opinion).

Since part of the story is the mystery of what happened there, I can see why they decided to cut that.  Although we are going to have to see how it plays out.

Also, they played through it pretty fast and even said there was some side content they didn't show.  Also they didn't get into all the investigate options.  It might very well have more to it than we saw because of this.  Guess we'll find out if it was a good call or not once the game comes out. ;)

I think they could have had an 'Origin' style playthrough to the Conclave, introducing you to some figures (eg. The Divine, Mage Leader, Templar Leader) so we got an idea of how bad things were and introducing the situation to those new to the franchise. There may have been some side content (eg. 'Oh no, I do not know why M'Lady is, but she dropped this locket' and you could decide to deliver it to the correct person for a reward, to a theif for a different reward, or pocket it; that sort of thing), and maybe content exploring your Origin (some light interaction with characters, maybe a 'mission' for them - like, say, the Elf Inquisitor had to break into an office to collect notes for the Keeper or something). There could of been a build up of mystery as your character noticed say, The Mage Leader whispering with someone, the Divine slyly exiting the room after her speech, etc. This sort of prologue could have build your character earlier, gave you connection to those who died, and provided vague clues to the ongoing mystery; the prologue could have ended when, say, your character hear's something, goes to investigate...then when they come to (as far as they recall), they are in that laying in the ruins opening that kicked off the Stream.

I get why it wasn't done, but kinda felt it should have. Also felt Solas' introduction was poor, and didn't understand why Varric was there really (presumably to record it, but he did just sort of come out of nowhere). I like this game, but unfortunately the last fortnight has killed a lot of the hype for me. Things happen way too quickly, you have an awful lot of trust placed on you from the start - and how, exactly, did they conclude that your glow hand could close the rifts at all? I dunno. I like this game, but don't find myself as anticipatory as I once was. I guess we'll just have to wait for the game and see though.

About the hand I think it is mentioned that Solas has been keeping it from killing you. Also, it seems you have passed out when coming out of the fade and it really doesn't say how long you have been out and in chains. So, I guess Solas studied it while you where asleep.

So I ended up watching a bit of it to see if I liked the American voice, i wanted to use it for my serious elf... But now I'm worried it's going to be really jarring...

Do you guys think the American voice could work for an elf?

I actually decided after hearing the voices to go with default for each race on my playthroughs. Sumalee did a good job, in my opinion, but I don't think it works well with elves. It's too deep I think.

I get where you are coming from, but I actually fall into the other camp.  I like the idea of being thrown in and having to piece together what happened along with my PC.  Considering what happened at the Conclave, I think they are going to have to explore what happened in game at some point.  So I'm okay with not playing an hour before jumping into the real action.  Origins was cool, giving your character a backstory and stuff, but I don't think the game is spoiled because they don't put all that in the beginning.  I don't remember when they said it, but it was in one of the twitch streams, they wanted to spread the more 'origin' content throughout the game.  People will ask you what you were doing there and you can answer or not.  There might also be flash backs to the Conclave (we don't know ;) ).

Concerning Solas, I think it would have actually been weird and badly paced to give him a long introduction (incudes Varric here).  They are in the middle of a battle field.  One that they have lost control of.  There isn't time for a long drawn out conversation.  They said that after the prologue we can talk to all our companions in Haven before we continue the story.  This is probably where more of the introduction is going to be.  aka why are you here? how did you get here kind of thing.  You have to remember the feeling the dev's were trying for, they wanted a feeling of a massive and immediate threat.  One that nobody really has a clue about.  They also wanted to give the feeling of chaos most likely.  Throwing the player in without a huge introduction, helps create that feeling in the player.  The exposition can come after.

What you are suggesting would slow the pacing of the game down.  The dev's said they really wanted to focus on the inquisition, not who you where before, but who you must become sort of thing.  (Remember this isn't Origins 2.0, and what worked for Origins may not work for the story their trying to tell here.)

Hah, this is the reason I broke down and watched a little bit of it.  I guess it depends on the elf.  I wanted my Lavellan to have a bit deeper voice in addition to the American accent, so it works for me.

American Accent sounds a bit too deep for a Dalish elf in my opinion, at least for the female protag. On the other end the idea of the Dwarf Inquisitor with a British voice is weird to me.
