Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I've always believed that killing Leandra was done to explore themes of loss, grief, regret, and simply growing up. Part of getting older is dealing with your parents dying, and how you handle that situation.
How she was killed does tie it into the central conflict of the game and should make that conflict a personal one for Hawke, but that isn't why she was killed, at least in my interpretation.

To clarify: I don't see Hawke doing anything to disturb the nest as a whole over this. When one hornet stings you, and you kill that hornet, the nest barely notices. Even if Hawke were caught (and there's a precedent for killing Templars without being caught, and one which doesn't just apply to Hawke's party) I think Hawke could get away with killing a Templar who raped or Tranquilized his sister post Act II. The lives of individual Templars just don't seem to mean all that much, if the fact that you can kill Templars left and right and not have a death squad bearing down on you is anything to go by.
Though again, this wouldn't undo the offense committed against Bethany. There is a logical argument for going to Kirkwall, given the power that Gamlen would have had were he more competent and apparently has for all his sister knew at the time, but there's also a decent one that it's a good place to avoid.
When Hawke starts taking the law into his own hands is disturbing the nest as a whole. When Meredith starts finding out that Hawke is killing her Templar's can create a big mess for him, especially considering the fact that Meredith could very well strip away Hawke's titles of champion in matters of seconds with nothing to stand for in the city. No Hawke could not had gotten away with murdering a Templar who raped or tranquilized his sister post ACT II. This is one of the reasons why I don't understand why Bioware released this game so early in the production. The lack of consequences is rather disturbing. Apparently Bioware took notice as they've added it into inquisition.

I think it's more likely than you imply that he could have gotten away with doing it, but this isn't a necessary argument given that all he has to do is secretly murder the Templar. That I'm sure he could have gotten away with (assuming he didn't get sloppy and leave actual proof), considering his status and Meredith's use for him, at least before Meredith well and truly lost it. He had in the past. And even if he didn't, that wouldn't help the Templar. The Templar would still be stone cold dead. And the Templar would know this going into the abuse. That's why I said a Templar would have to be pretty low-functioning to try it. Again, it's not perfect, but it's not the same as Bethany having nothing going for her that the other Circle mages don't.

I haven't read all of these, so if I repeat then you have someone in agreement. Conflict is necessary to push stories along but this was off off Broadway. The only thing I can see is that Hawke is left (basically) on his own - there are no more ties to Ferelden. He can reinvent. Also that no matter if they are mage or templar or unlucky victim crazy is crazy. Cullen is Cullen and his job is being a templar. Orsino is Orsino and his job is First Enchanter - he is not crazy because he is a mage. Meredith is not crazy because she is a templar. Did I make a point here? Any will do.
The weather here is crap.

That was kind of my thought when I read the title as well.
Same. It's still hard for me to not think of The Mother rather then Leandra.
