There is no answer on this in the lore. They might address it in this game, but it won't be with your Inquisitor because they've already confirmed that there are no kids.

An Elf gets born, obviously.
But, really we don't know and probably won't know.

All races can breed with each other, so it's possible.

Since Bioware is largely anti-kids, I doubt it.
Though there's always headcanon.

So far we know:
Human + Elf = Human
Dwarf + Elf = Dwarf
Human + Dwarf = Half-dwarf
I speculate that present-day Qunari are actually the product of thousands of years of careful cross-breeding of the original race, likely with humans and possibly with elves and dwarves as well. If that's true, then Qunari should be able to reproduce with other races, though we don't know the precise details.

So assuming that Qunari interracial reproduction is possible...
Qunari + Human= Half-Qunari with more diverse human features
Qunari + Elf= A more nimble and pointy eared Qunari
Qunari + Dwarf= Half-Dwarf with Qunari horns
My question is why the Qun would consider this a "pointless exercise in futility?" Is it because the by-products of such unions were judged to be less-useful or capable by the standards of the Qun?

Except qunari already have pointy ears, and elven genes would just become qunari genes. It would look completely qunari.

Elf genes are EXTREMELY weak for some reason (possibly a magical reason dating back to the time of Arlathan?) so I have a feeling that even if Qunari have some elf DNA, the result of a union between a present-day Qunari and present-day elf would just be a Qunari.
Dwarves don't have weaker genetics, but they battle infertility due to thousands of years of close proximity to lyrium. Surface dwarves may recover their fecundity over time though.
My question is why the Qun would consider this a "pointless exercise in futility?" Is it because the by-products of such unions were judged to be less-useful or capable by the standards of the Qun?
The Qun's breeding program is all about being as efficient as possible. The present-day Qunari are the result of careful study and planning to achieve maximum potential. Breeding a pure Qunari with a member of another race produces something less efficient, so I doubt cross-breeding is practiced in the Qun any longer.
Although... Viddathari are still part of the Qun, and thus subject to breeding programs, right?

I hate these laziness in half-breed design. Pokémon the baby's whatever the mother is, Elder Scrolls a Khajiit male breeds a human woman -_-' a normal looking human pops out. Please.
Human + Qunari = a smaller Qunari, but still taller than a human, with pale pink skin instead of ash/bronze and Qunari horns.
Elf + Qunari = again pale skin, smaller than a human/Qunari halfbreed, likely average human height, yet skinny as an elf. Beautiful attractive elvish faces, with horns.
Dwarf + Qunari = likely the average height of an elf, but stockier and very muscular. As well horns.

I don't think Qunari can breed with other races...might have to do something with their resistance with poisons that affect all other races except them(such as 'Vitaar' and saar-qamek poison that brings other races to maddnes
Mabye because of this special resistance they are unable to re-produce with none-Qunari races.
Or mabye they can...but I at least don't know of any case where we have some Qunari-hybrid.

Male Qunari + Female Elf = a ridiculously painful childbirth.

what does Born?
Babby.
My suspicion (and hedcanon) is all the humanoid races are compatible with each other in one way or another but we know nothing about Qunari and their relationship with other races. They could be like humans and elves except the child looks qunari. Or they could be a hybrid like dwarves and humans.

It's probable that it isn't a biological possibility. Seems to be the intent as early as Origins if you consider certain...context with Morrigan/Sten banter.
A: I'm pretty sure that was Sten screwing with Morrigan.
B: Even if it's not, that's what artificial insemination is for.

I am given to understand that half-elves all look entirely nonelven, rather than that being an exclusive property of half-human half-elves.

Maybe a hornless, non-pale qunari like sten? It is a genetic mutation in lore, isn't it?

I thought it was a rare and thus extremely recessive trait.

Just wondering whether it is appropriate to impose our understanding of genetics and evolution on a world like Thedas. After all we are talking about a place where spirits are only next door and elves claim they were once immortal.

True, but we're hardly trying to impose wholly real world genetics here. There are established genetic tendencies within the lore, and we're trying to speculate within the context of that lore.
