Not sure if that includes all side quest or what.
Seems like a good length to me.

I would guess it was with some sidequests, but not a completionist playthrough.
Unlikely, BW almost always over estimates the length of their games.
That wasn't from BW I believe that was someone from gamespot.

Not including 2-3 hours of time spent in character creation
Hah, I know right? If what I've seen is any indication, I'll be spending as much time on the character creator as I would have on Mass Effect, DA:O and DA2 combined.
Bodes well for the game! More than likely he did a few quests but did not complete everything. 85hrs is pretty great no matter how you look at it. I look forward to losing myself in this game. For me it would definitely be around 100+ hrs. I foresee a lot of exploration, crafting and just strolling in my future. Not to mention I will be obsessed with perfecting Skyhold.
And that's not even taking into consideration the multiplayer... I still play ME3s multiplayer! I am excite.

Not Bioware, he's a reviewer for gamespot.
Yeah I guess if one do most side-quests you can find then add another 5-10 hours? So close to 100 hours. Besides some people do rush half the time (especially reviewers and testers) so if you take your time, 100+ hours I would say. I mostly rushed through Origin and it took me around 50-60 hours, plus I used a modded Warden so she was greatly beefed up just so I could finish Origin before Inquisition. I spend more than that in DAII because I took the time, my first playthrough took around 60+ hours.
Of course gonna play on casual and/or normal (depending on enemies I meet), and that would cut down the playtime because of obvious reasons, it being easier thus less reloads.
85 hours for story only is alooot
If you only do the story in most RPGs you can finish it within 20 ish hours..
It's important to note that they said "the story". This implies they focused on the main quests.
So they probably did not bother with non-trivial sidequests and disregarded lore-related objects and random discussions. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't tinker with crafting and played on Casual or Normal.
Some devs who did a completionist playthrough said it took them 100+ hours.
In any case, 85 hours is a damn good deal.
You know, I'm gonna reserve judgement. A story mode lasting 80+ hours is insane. Welcome, but insane. It's, quite frankly, a little hard to believe.
I mean if it's true then hell yes. At this point I'd be happy with the story lasting 40 hours.
I do agree that they didn't just do the main quests. Bioware stated during those months different lenght for the main quest, but the biggest Number they stated was 50 hours. That sounds a bit defensive to just assume that people took a shortest path possible and skipped all the details. I doubt the main story alone would be 85hrs long.
Completionist playthrough in any game shouldn't really be taken into account, by the way. That means all the useless time spent on doing filler quests (e.g. collecting and fetching stuffs that have no background or relations to story), and also possibly reloading/replaying the game for different paths & choices are also included, and that can boost a game length by quite a lot.
All kidding aside, I'm stoked for a long campaign. It's time for a new bar to be set on story for games. More value for the dollar, methinks.

I highly doubt he did nothing but the story. He probably just played doing whatever he wanted, not necessarily a completionist playthrough but still enjoying a lot of the side dishes along the way. And if so that's still a healthy time.
