Reviewers are overcompensating after ME3 and DA2 backlash. Many of these reviews have lower score than DA2 and DAO, but they says the game is the best DA games so far.

Well, the issue is mostly the writing and who is writing. Who wrote the Origin and Dragon Age 2 reviews compared to Inquisition?

Also, if it is a case of overcompensating, then the reviews are simply biased for political reasons, and pretty mediocre reasons at that, since, hate to say it, fan outcry against those games was still a bit over the top. I have a feel more recent events are in play if it is political reasons.

Not to discredit the great reviews, but it is true that they don't really mean the game's good or bad yet. Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 got really, really good critical reviews, and yet a lot of fans regard them as some of the worst games in BioWare's catalogue. I think it'll all boil down to personal preference. Critics like the game, but the players may or may not be different, and of course always will be.

Eh, nudity means little in the grand scheme of things. Nice touch I guess, although it depends on how its used more than the fact that it was used.

Well... yeah... of course. But since the romance part has always been there, it's a huge plus that Bioware have finally embraced the idea of showing the human body during said scenes. Doesn't feel as half-assed to me, for a lack of better words.

Mass Effect did that first though, albeit it was side boob, but it was tasteful in my opinion then.

I guess what I am saying is this is not really that big of a deal yet regardless of context, and the context is more important than the nudity itself.

One thing I am worried about is the comments about freezing problems with PS4. I just bought a PS4 especially for Inquisition. When Skyrim came out I basically had to stop playing because of so many game breaking bugs (freezes, corrupted files, glitches). I patched the game multiple times and still literally could not finish the game on my PS3. I never understood how the game could get such great ratings when so many people had such significant problems actually playing the game.

My worry now is that the level of grandeur of games like Skyrim and Inquisition exceeds their ability to played well on consoles.

As other people have noted too, websites seem to have become more conservative with their scores after a lot of criticism. "Score inflation" is definitely not happening now.

It's rare to see 10s for anything now, and - as we can see from Unity - big AAA games from major publishers are starting to get 5s, 6s and 7s.

It's swung back to more realistic scores, but people still make comparisons with older games from a different time.

And forget that the scores then don't mesh. This is where better writing would help instead of saying its the best thing since sliced bread.

The PS4 issues were with Sony's firmware, not DA:I.

It's been fixed in the latest 2.02 firmware update, which I believe was released today.

Nobody is getting high 9s or 10s anymore. After getting criticized for only using the 7-10 scale for many years, reviewers recently discovered that there are numbers below 7.

Everything above 8/10 is a very good game.

Except Bayonetta who rocked a multitude of ten's a few weeks ago.

Mass Effect did that way back with 1, and then neither 2, 3 or any of the DA games had it after all the controversy. All I'm saying is that it's good to see Bioware have decided to ignore all the idiots who complained back and done their thing. Not sure why you're trying to convince me that context is the most important factor since I don't remember disagreeing with that anywhere.

Well, Bayonetta got 91 on metacritic, compared to DA:I which is at 89 at the moment (for PS4, which is what I'm using since it's got the most reviews). 2 points is a pretty meaningless difference, particularly since the sample size for DA reviews is a little small at the moment.

As far as DA2, the issues the game had were nearly all mentioned in reviews and the reviews themselves were generally more negative and lower than the usual for Bioware games. As far as ME3, it technically wasn't a bad game at all in most ways, but reviewers brushed the ending and overall weaker and more shoehorned, rushed plot under the rug.

I think reviewers are caught up with gamers in the sense that they're more skeptical and critical of Bioware now, now that the past disappointments have sunk in. I don't think these reviews should be taken with a grain of salt quite as much as they should have been in the past, considering that. The issues the game has are being pointed out and the reviews so far seem pretty reasonable and level-headed about Inquisition.

I still am curious on this because from gameplay footage it looked exactly like Bayonetta.

By all reports the latest PS4 patch 2.02 has resolved the issue the reviewers were having.

Unless the Inquisitor can turn into a panther, dodge an Eldritch angel's sweeping tentacle and skyrocket into the air with gun-boots and magical butterfly wings, then heel stomp said Eldritch angel with demons conjured with hair portals from 20 yards away all on the fly, not really.

Edit: Assuming you mean Inquisition compared to Bayonetta, and not Bayonetta 2 compared to Bayonetta 1.

It is Bayonetta 1 but perfected. It is the pinnacle of evolution of twitch based action game. I know people tends to think i am overreacting when i go on about Bayonetta 2, but that's usually prior to them playing it. My wife, exhibit A  :) .

I don't think I've ever bought a game based on a review. But I only buy a couple of games a year, if that, and I know what I like (and who makes it) so I've usually preordered everything I want long before reviews come out.

The only games I've ever felt "burned" by were wonky things I got out of bargain bins, and even then the sheer awful was usually entertaining enough that I didn't miss the five dollars all that much.

Yep, you sound just like me.

From NeoGAF:

"I saw a couple of people wondering where the GameTrailers review is. I (Ben Moore) will be doing the review and it will likely go up Thursday or Friday this week. Sorry for the delay, but so far I've absolutely loved it. It's the Dragon Age game I've been waiting for."
