I like reading the reviews and hearing what people are saying about a game but I base purchasing a game on my opinion alone.

SpoilerAnd I think Hawke joins the Inquisition although I don't know why he wants to be a follower instead of a leader.
Gamespot review was fairly respectful; one of the more pleasing articles, IMO.

Totes. Not because I found out, but because I found out who.

Two very possible possibilities.

Exactly. Although the voice was similar in the trailers but still.

So I did a rough calculation (and I say rough because a few of those scores are oddly done and tough for me to factor in), and the average score we have from all the reviews put together from the front page of this thread is...
88.6

Form the ars technica review:"The intentionally vague nature of the conversation wheel is less appropriate when every nuance of a character’s tone is important. A chosen line like "Well, that was interesting" could come out as a tension-breaking quip or an insult at Varric's continued antics, and it's the game that decides which one gets presented. Without knowing exactly what a character is going to say or how they'll say it, you can't be sure any decision reflects intent."
I thought based on the stream of the first hour that there was an explanation for each option which could be turned off if you want?

I can only imagine that they just didn't realize you could turn them off or on.

Has anyone watched the video that accompanied the IGN review? Holy crap balls, Vivienne, I don't remember Knight Enchanter looking so awesome in the Twitch Streams.

The explanations only show up for choices of action, I believe.

That's right. Dialog can have tone icons, but the written clarifications are only for plot choices, not banter.

So they got lots of complaints from DA2 and they make it worse in DAI by removing the icons but not increasing clarity otherwise?

I've read a few reviews and trying to avoid spoilers. I'm actually surprised that some rate the game as low as they do based on their review. It honestly seems like it should be rated higher based on what some reviewers say. They make it sound like a 9.5-10 game and then rate it an 8.5. Strange that they feel they should be so careful on the score...

Question: Are there any current Gen (xbox360 PS3) reviews out yet or were all the review copies for consoles Next Gen?

What's wrong with Tales of Xillia? It's a great tales game, it was fun, and I think it deserved that score.
Half-assed and incredibly easy battle system, uninspired and dreary level design, very few and bland dungeons and the rushed last third of the story, which was just all over the place. It does have one of the overall better stories of the Tales series and whether you like the characters is entirely subjective but if a game like Xillia, with so many apparent design-flaws, deserves a 9.6, then there'd have to be countless games deserving of a 10. It was a good game, but that's pretty much it.
A game that is simply "fun" (as you yourself said it) with nothing really standing out, doesn't deserve an almost perfect score.
Let me love you.
Idk why people compare the reviews of two separate genre games to each other... context is a thing, you know? I wouldn't base my opinion of Mario Kart or CoD on the same criteria as I would Dragon Age. Looking for completely different things.
I didn't compare the reviews, don't put words into my mouth. I simply said that many reviewers on rpgfan have the tendency to score games way too high, with the exception of a few - the one who reviewed DA:I being one of them.

As other people have noted too, websites seem to have become more conservative with their scores after a lot of criticism. "Score inflation" is definitely not happening now.
It's rare to see 10s for anything now, and - as we can see from Unity - big AAA games from major publishers are starting to get 5s, 6s and 7s.
It's swung back to more realistic scores, but people still make comparisons with older games from a different time.
I have no issues with this whatsoever. In fact I love that the video game review scene is going this route.

Well, you effectively get the same information you got from the icons just from the placement of the dialogue option
