for me
dao 4/10
DA2 6/10 would have been an 8 were it not rushed
da:I is looking like a 7
me1 9/10
me2 8/10
me3 9/10

ME3 is a 9 but DAO is a 4.

So far from what I've seen.

this is EXTREMELY  presumptuous.

sound? because you've heard so much of it? DA:O's music was fantastic.
Characters? because you've seen so much of them? They don't even seem that astounding, tbh. not as lovable as oghren, morrigan, shale, allistair, wynne..
etc

I'm buying da:i and I'm sure I'll love it and all, but I do not ride the hype train.

Cassandra and Leliana will form the Inquisition and together we will defeat nostalgia and close the memory fade.

Lol, well said.

I dont really see the point of watching reviews for the sake of deciding to buy a game or not. DA:I for example, this is the next chapter of the DA universe. In other words, they had me at "DA:I revealed!". Not buying it was never an option.

Reviews are more for fun / entertainment etc.

If someone, in 2014, really need a review to decide to buy a game or not? Then I'd say this is mostly for young gamers who doesent know who they are yet and thus doesent know what they want.

A mature gamer knows who he / she is, and know what he / she wants. And is more than intelligent enough to do research by themselves, enough so that a review is not needed.

I'm hoping for good reviews because, if the game is indeed as good as it's looking now, the fact is that good reviews will equal better sales. Can barely hold the excitement for the embargo lift!

It does not make me unintelligent or lack research skills to wait for reviewers to write their reports on the game for me to make my decision. Reviews give you information on the game that you can use to help you in your purchase decision (it is, in fact, a form of research)

You're basing your purchase on nothing but a name and calling people who use reviews stupid for needing a review?

I'm buying it either way because I'm a fan. But if i was less of a fan, i would wait for reviews and see.

In fact, reviews specifically led me to DA:O so many years ago.

Looking at multitude of reviews would be part of your research into the game. For example looking at reviewers who stray from the herd and post dissenting opinions would be good to compare and contrast whether or not the game is to your taste. Examining why this reviewer gave 100 and this other reviewer thought it was a 6 should be part of your research into the game because these people actually played the game and immediately have more experience with it than you ever will unless you play it for yourself.

You may not have intended it, but your post make a lot presumptions on why people make reviews. Its almost dismissive of reviews altogether. Reviews on their own shouldn't be the reason whether or not you should buy a game, but they can help decide on whether or not its worth your time.

Not really. Reviews are, at best, extremely opinionated and highly subjective. At their worst, they are inaccurate, poorly edited (in terms of style, content, grammar, spelling), heavily biased towards or against the product (including the genre the game is in and the company that made it) and are frequently bought via ad space.

Their value as a research tool is limited at best.

Assuming that they have actually played the game, you would be right. Based on the innumerable errors found in reviews (everything from getting characters names wrong to bringing up bugs nobody else has), it has been my experience that most reviewers do not play the games they review. And the ones that do, either play a truncated run to make their deadlines or are playing a significantly older version of the game then the one we get.

A review doesn't have to be a good one to convince me to play a game. I read one complaining about Gone Home's "political correctness and lesbian agenda" and I bought that game so fast you wouldn't believe it.

I could absolutely see how the time-crunch could effect quality of the review....but is it true that most reviewers don't play the game at all, though?

The only gaming site I ever really read is RPS and I have never gotten that impression from them.

Judging the weight of a review is up to you, as a consumer. i do not see one good/bad review and just go (not) buy it.. I read multiple reviews, get information, and use that information to impact my purchase decision.

If you just go read one review that's 10/10 in every category than go buy it (or one 0/10 review), you're simply a moron. An informed consumer would go read MULTIPLE reviews, find common ground, and extract the objective information.

Even the most biased review provides tangible information that you can use, and even if they don't, generally positive reviews typically indicate a good game.

I dont think review these days serve much as a buying guide(like games where simply a product, like a brand new cassette player), times have changed, games have changed. I compare it more and more to the way movie reviews(the good ones) work.

If you find one review that provides accurate, unbiased information then I congratulate you. You have had significantly better luck than I.

I read multiple reviews, sure. To find all the mistakes, half-truths and flat-out lies they tell. It's like a game; is this one on the take? Is this other one biased beyond all reason? Has this one even played the game? Does this one even know what a video game is (admittedly, that's more for mainstream media outlets than gaming based ones)? 'Tis great fun.

And no, generally positive reviews do not indicate a good game. At best, they indicate that a significant portion of a deeply corrupt elite unrepresentative of anything other than their individual biases found sufficient things that they like about the game to outweigh anything they didn't like. More generally, a majority of positive reviews indicate that the game's producers have a good marketing team and an ample budget. To, you know, buy ad spaces. And not bribes. At all. No sir, no bribery here.

A very poor research tool indeed.

Say what you will about Joe's personality, but he works damn hard and cares a lot about his work.

I didn't not bad-mouth him... Read what I wrote more clearly please. I only mentioned the fact that I do not choose to watch him, please don't talk this way to me if you don't care to read my words properly.

Reviews latch onto and have a tendency to increase the momentum of certain consensual opinion.

Interested in the reviews, but the game is a must buy regardless of.

I like Angry Joes reviews they are always entertaining...

He's a bit on the misogynistic side at times though... The Witcher 2 review was kinda embarrassing..

Eh, I don't get his humor, but it' more of a cultural/language thing. I still find his taste/opinion toward games pretty close to mine, so for me he's a good reference at least.

Are you sure you know what this means? It's pretty tiring to see almost everyone use labels like that these days.
