True.  The Barrier Spells seem as essential as healing at this point.  Which would beg the question, why just swap healing for barrier if healing was working?

Because healing wasn't working for the dev's

A) it wasn't lore friendly

B) it limited design choices as it meant difficult had no real curve and meant a tough battle gave them no real choice but to have insane damage risk party wipes. only to drop several notches back down after it.

C) limited party choices.

as for rogues they will always be lock picks for me.

I cannot wait to stealth over a field, pop down a trap, wave to the angry demon and watch them blow up from a safe distance. Rogues have the best plans.

I still don't understand why Dragon Age is the only franchise in the history of RPGs with tiny daggers strapped on their backs.

It looks utterly ridiculous and (to me) it's pretty immersion-breaking.

I also wish they could use swords like in DA:O.

Regardless, I'll probably be playing a rogue.

Good to see someone with these concerns. I used to have them.

What I did was use 2 daggers that a different in length. There are long daggers in DA2 and there will be long daggers in DAI as well.

What I do is put one long dagger and one short dagger to have the rogue be a more realistic duelist since that is how most dual weapon duelists use their weapons. One large weapon in one hand, preferable their main hand while another smaller weapon in the other hand.

Then it looks like I am wielding a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other.

Rogues have better DPS and better defense at higher levels than Warriors. Who wouldn't want to use them?

Rogues are needed for Locks and traps removal.

They are also vital for being the Burst Damage member of the group.

Ever need a pesky low HP but High Damage Enemy removed from the battle? Just send in a Rogue to assassinate...I mean make them have a sudden accident in the battlefield.

Have a Boss with high HP and needs to burn it down before it can burn down the Tank HP? Send a Rogue to attack from flank and burn his HP down before the boss can know what stabbing him or her in the back with extremely high amount of burst damage.

Never forget if there is ever something that needs killing. You can always count on rogues for the Jobs.

(Disclaimer: We do not have responsibility if the client get him or herself killed during the Job since it is not in the contract to serve as bodyguards or meat shields.)

All classes are needed to gain access to certain areas and items, all classes have adventure skills.

What's that?

Unfortunately. I'll probably make quizzy a rogue just so I don't have to take smartass male, smartass female or emo kid along.

Do you know if you can do that in DAI? Or do the daggers always come as pairs now? I can't remember seeing any screens with mismatched daggers.

Having them can be useful. But required or needed? I hope not. I want a "party" with the main character alone, don't like any companions yet.

What's that?

I'm not sure but didn't some reveal showed us all classes have abilities that will help us unlock hidden things in the world? Like smashing some things open (warriors) or removing enchanted locks (mages) as well as the usual rogue lockpicking.

I actually kind of wish they gave the Rogue something like a Kodachi. Longer than a dagger but still sorter than the average sword.

Yeah I'm not bringing a rogue out of spite. I seriously hate how every game tries to make them gods. ****** rogues.

Good luck with that.

Rogues are fun to play as and super useful with their unique skills and DPS, they've always been my favorite. DAI will be the first time I'll be playing something other than rogue my first playthrough as I'm super excited about mage necromancer, but I'm loving all the rogue companions so it won't be a big deal. :D

But I'd say rogues have more use beyond lockpicking and trap disarming, that's just icing on the cake. If you want a balanced party, you'll need a rogue. They can pick off targets one by one with great speed, while mages will be useful for a broader range of damage and warriors have the endurance.

I like to think rogues as a mix of combat engineers and special forces. They can be highly effective before the battle begins, as well as during the first moments of the battle, but once the real fighting begins, they're not so useful anymore.

Of course, this being Dragon Age, the rogues are likely to be wizards casting invisibility spells, while being superior to warriors in open combat. It's almost as silly as calling the guys who fill the traditional infantry role tanks. Real tanks, after all, move fast and hit hard, while being quite fragile in prolonged combat.

Well I have no problem playing a rogue, I was just wondering if it's required or not.  I mean could a party of four mages be effective and not miss out on a lot of stuff?  Or all warriors?  It just seems sometimes if you don't play with at least one of each class type, you are just not playing right.  Looks like a party of four needs a Tank, a DPS (could be rogue/daggers or 2HW), a mage and another ranged (mage or rogue/archer).  Anything outside of that will have problems.
