I can't seem to load any of my created characters from Dragon Age Origins. So screw it why not just pick one of the default heroes and rename him/her, is this possible? If so, how do I go about doing that?
Is there any way I can create a custom hero in the keep?

You can't.
The nearest you can get to that is to download the standalone DA:O Character Creator (should still be available at FilePlanet) and create a new character in that. If you want, you can even use that to recreate the look of one of your old characters and give him/her the same name. Hit the Upload button at the end and it should appear in your list of heroes in the Keep about 30 minutes later.
A couple of people have said that doesn't work for them either, so there's no guarantee it will work. For me though, it did work even though I haven't managed to get any of my actual in-game characters into the Keep, so it's probably worth a try. Plus, if it does, it's a very quick and easy workaround.
