My thoughts on Episode 5:

* **** that they killed off Arthur and there was nothing I could do about it because Ramsay ****** Snow has plot armor.......

* **** that they killed off Finn and the only thing that that I could about it was leaving him behind at Castle Black in Ep 4

* **** Sera for abandoning Mira despite the fact that I lied for her and helped secure that marriage proposal

* **** that they made the non-sentinel the traitor.  It was totally out of character for Royland to betray the House like he did.  Total BS writing.  But I had to kill him anyway.  He was undermining the family and putting everyone in danger.  He had to die.

* **** that they made me choose between Asher and Rodrik at the end.  I like Asher much more than Rodrik, but it just felt like Asher had fulfilled his purpose.  He'd brought the army that he promised.  And I couldn't live with myself allowing Griff ****** Whitehall to kill Rodrik after all he'd been through.  I figured that Beska could fulfill the role that Asher would play, so I made sure to tell her that she was my sister as much as any Forrester.  I'm just hoping that she'll fight the Whitehills to the end, now that we've lost three of our best warriors (Arthur, Royland, and Asher).

 

Other random thoughts:

 

* Mira's story sucked this episode.  I'm assuming that there's no way to fool Tyrion, so it felt kind of a waste.  There's no way in 7 hells that I'm using those names when I go back to Cersei.  They seem as fake as they come. 

* Amaya seems pretty badass.  I hope she plays more of a role than that big fat pit fighter played before he got skewered.

* Does Rodrik sleep with Eleana regardless of the decisions that you make?  If so, I predict that she's carrying the new Lord of Ironrath right now.

On a more positive note, in my 20+ years of gaming, absolutely nothing thus far can possibly come even close to the satisfaction I'll feel when I get to carve Ludd, Gryff and all their men up to the point that even Ramsay would find it excessive and barbaric. I-I will get to kill them, right? RIGHT?

I almost always take the diplomatic, no violence approach to any situation in a video game if given an option.  It speaks volumes about the quality of this story that it has driven me to beat Griff into submission and kill Royland.  I genuinely feel forced to take this approach because of how terrible it is for Rodrik.  It's a great immersive experience.  I still take the 'honorable' approach with Asher, though.  Bloodsong will be a million times more useful alive than dead.

To sum up Episode 5 in a nutshell: The writing came across as lazy and half-assed (at least as far as choices being involved). I also felt that the episode was short as I finished it in a little under an hour and a half, though it sort of made up for it with all the action that happened.

 

I really hate how

The North Grove is going to be so damned pointless. If I find it, then it's going to be too late to bring it into play, there is no way for Gared to let the Forresters know that he has found it, assuming that it's real.

 

As mentioned, the last choice was extremely forced and reeks of being re-written into the plot, as

both Asher and Rodrik knew that things weren't right before hand. Telltale could have at least went back and cut their comments out.

 

 

The traitor

reasoning was stupid as hell too. "Oh, a ten year old chose the other guy and not me." get over yourself, fool! "I did it to save the house," no you didn't, you just admitted to doing it out of jealousy and your jealousy has doomed the house...

 

 

I didn't expect grand level writing that left me drooling in awe, but a lot the writing in this episode was really **** poor. 

Nevertheless, I'm curious as to how the last episode will turn out. I just hope that we get a lot of options regarding how the game can end.

Asher die by the way, because I had him comment that he was just another soldier on the boat and it would have been hypocritical for him to have let Rodrik die. I also chose him because I'd been playing him as someone who didn't really consider himself much of a Forrester and he just struck me as the black sheep of the family who was willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good aka his exile. He was the better man (at least he struck me as that) and so he did what the better man would do and sacrificed himself. I had him tell Beska that she was as much family to him as Rodrik or anyone else was.

it was to set Malcolm up as one of the protagonists in season 2, which I can't imagine them not doing. This way he's not at the ambush and we have someone over in Essos for S2. Assuming the Forresters would still be the focus.

it was only Duncan claiming to know Lud's plans to ambush Asher that saved his life.  Even though Roderick promised Talia, I couldn't risk Asher's life like that Too bad sparing him seemed to amount to nothing as they still walked right into the trap

In my game, he did tell Asher that if she does return to Westeros and takes the Iron Throne, she'll be the only ally the Forresters need.  So I can't really fault Malcolm for thinking long-term in that regard.

[/spoiler]  I left Roderick because I felt he was there to rescue Asher.  And leaving him behind would have made the entire trip a colossal waste of time.

 

But yeah while making his last stand I kept looking for the RT mark to target Griff.  Hoped he could at least take him out.

 

Now I'll have to hope for a truly awesome scenerio next episode.  Like Talia getting to gut Griff while Lud is forced to watch or something    [/spoiler]

Had Rodrik try to stab Ramsay. More so out of an OOC 'lets see what this option does' moment, but when it didn't backfire I rolled

with it.

 

Spared Bloodsong. Figured as the best fighter of their bunch it was probably better to keep him alive.

 

Had Mira try to lie about Cersei sending her.

 

Spared Royland. I thought the intelligence might be important.

 

Left Asher behind. I thought his role in the story was complete (getting the mercs to Westeros), and as lord of the House Rodrik is more important than he is.

This was by far the weakest episode of the game.

Ramsay Snow arriving to murder Ethan was brilliant. That should have been the end of him however. Continuing to have him reappear and throw around his unassailable plot armor is tiresome. The writers need to quit relying on Ramsay Snow as the foiler of House Forrester's plans.

 

The traitor reveal was both underwhelming and potentially out of character for both options. Both Royland and Duncan have had opportunities in previous episodes to demonstrate loyalty that makes their treason reveal confusing. If they were traitors for example, why would they potentially die fighting against the Whitehills? Surely they would have just gone 'Red Wedding' on Rodrik the moment he tries to attack Ludd. It also may not make sense. For example while I had Ethan play it cautious and appoint Duncan sentinel, I've been playing Rodrik was much more forceful and aggressive and making decisions more in line with what Royland would suggest. His rant about Rodrik making bad decisions didn't make any sense, since Rodrik had mostly done things that Royland had or would have approved of. 

 

The maester or Lady Forrester being the source of the leaks would have been more interesting, and more in character.

 

Gryff is no longer blind?

 

Sparing the traitor is pointless. Even if forewarned Rodrik and company still walk into an ambush, because plot. It makes absolutely zero sense. Sparing the traitor should have resulted in Rodrik warning Asher and turning the tables on Gryff and company. The ambushers should have ended up ambushed in that scenario. The writers should google Midway for an example of what happens when plans of an ambush are leaked.

 

The writers continue to have a very odd notion of what an army is. A handful of pitfighters do not an army make.
