I was expecting 4 to 1 male to female if not just five male characters. Mainly because this is normally the trend in games.

Having two female protagonists would be wild. Three would be spectacular.

The trend of games in general =/= the trend of Telltale games though.

Looking at their recent history, 400 Days was split 3:2, Jurassic Park was 3:3 (not a very good game, but it still counts), for the two TWD seasons it was 1:1, and their upcoming Borderlands game is also going to be 1:1. That's more than enough evidence to me that they tend to go for a roughly equal split.

Yeah but Westeros is sexist heavy. My doubt stems for TellTale reluctance due to the possible backlash.

But I'm sure TellTale will deliver.

Aye, I also would like one of the playable characters to be a woman. Regardless of her position in society, she'll still have to deal with the heavy sexism of the world of A Song of Ice and Fire(naturally given the setting) but hopefully she can be portrayed as a strong character like so many of the women in the novels are.

I also hope that there won't be some massive backlash towards the treatment of women in the series with people insinuating there's some goal to make them look weak. I'm actually surprised that GRRM has managed to get a pass from this after Game of Thrones brought his universe into the mainstream.

Though I'll be honest, some of the mainstream fans of Game of Thrones can still be ridiculous even these days.

"Is George R. R. Martin done writing the new Game of Thrones book? Its been so long since the one I didn't read and won't LOLOL books suk"

*I would summon the ASOIAF forces of darkness and sic them on someone if I had to hear someone say that again*

He tends to write his characters as people first, which is evident in the writing, and it's also how he usually answers question such as "How do you manage to write female characters so well?". In the gaming industry, I feel this is something Ragnar Tørnquist and people at Funcom/Red Thread do best -- Avoid those general stereo/and or archetypes and simply focus on writing good characters that come off as living, breathing humans, it's easier said than done obviously but there it is.

I don't think he tends to think too much about, what would make sense this female character I'm writing to do, as opposed to simply writing the outerlines first then have gender come in as part of the development process. This is how I'm picturing it.

The world is sexist but - Cersei's really problematic portrayal in the book aside - the actual work isn't sexist. Which gives a lot of room to explore stories from the POV of a female protagonist.

Besides they could do a Brienne of Tarth like character.... assuming this family has a woman warrior.

I would imagine their characters will follow the archetypical persons we see in the stark family. It sounds like they're all stark expys anyway. So I think you're less likely to get brienne and more likely to get arya. But maybe I'm wrong.

Haven't read the books. What's problematic about Cersei?

A) Lena Hedley isn't playing her. I don't mean this as a joke - Cersei the character doesn't have anywhere near the powerful emotional range that she has on the show when we see her from the POV of the other characters. To Eddard she's prideful and pitiable - a victim and victimizer depending on where you are in the story. To Sansa she's a sweet second mother and an abuser. To Tyrion she's a vindictive idiot. But the real Cersei is an unknown. Until her POV.

B) In her POV she's basically an insane idiot. She's pretty much exactly what Tyrion sees her as inside. A lot of the emotional depth is missing.

Oh sure.

But you know how it is with some people.

Cersei is an interesting character for sure and a complex one at that. She is a character built on contradictions of her own nature, which is varied and gets represented distinctively through different people (Jaime, Tyrion, Sansa, etc). Simplifying her character simply as a ambitious, power-hungry fanatic is doing her character a disservice, since she is also a mother, a lover and a soldier on herself.

I can certainly see the hate for her, but I can't stop loving her for her complexity and simply the essence of her character.

Screenshots of the game have appeared online. Here are a few samples.

Spoiler

Looks surprisingly good. A lot better than I initially imagined it would be (though textures are bit iffy). A trailer might pop up soon as well.

They don't actually use the cartoonish-cell-shaded-visual-nonsense of Walking Dead? Excellent.

Though the character models do seem somewhat similar but ehhh, hmm

Hmm, looks like Telltale has found a mix between their artstyle. Well looks good. Might get it if the trailer is interesting.

Thank you. I wish more people would see the books and show from that perspective instead of just mindlessly bashing them for sexism and misogyny. It does this amazing franchise a great disservice.

Based on the show, they said, so not surprising.  Also ensures the interest of fans of the show that haven't touched the books.

Just a heads up.

I know you're not directing that at me.

But just out of curiosity. If somebody got that from what I said please don't.

I'm actually referring to the backlash that could happen BECAUSE of those people.

But hey! What's a little backlash? It's ASOIAF, it's basically built on good ol' controversy. And that's a good thing.

Oh no that wasn't directed at anyone in this thread really. Just a general observation about some of ASOIAF/GOT's detractors and how they see the franchise.

Didn't they?  I'm pretty sure they used the actor's appearance and Varys definitely had the same voice.

Well I looked into it and James Cosmo and Conleth Hill did lend their likeness and voice to the game apparently. But Lena Headey did not and I think there were other actors who didn't as well.

I'm still a little bitter that the game's going to be based on the show rather than the books in the first place, tbh. I suppose that's not Telltale's fault though, but rather GRRM's for giving the ASOIAF license to Cyanide first (while I enjoyed their game for what it was, it was pretty lacking in a lot of ways).

Anyway, I hope Telltale uses the franchise's major characters solely as cameos and not in big roles.

Damn, that doesn't look bad. But now they need to use the original actors' voices, or the whole experience instantly breaks down, at least for me. There can't be a Tyrion looking like DInklage, but not sounding like him, just no ****** way.

The game looks awesome but I agree it will be a shame if the voices aren't from the actors of the TV series.

Hearing Peter Dinklage's voice (and hopefully Charles Dance's) would be enough to buy me.

Even if the game is a load of tripe their performances will be awesome.
