I'm currently at full friendship with Merrill and I was wondering if I could refuse her the arulin'holm, have her destroy the mirror etc. without being in rivalry. Anyone tried this? Does it make sense storywise or are there inaccuracies where she will still consider me her rival?

If you have locked in at 100% friendship you should be stuck there forever. Aka refusing her the knife will not net you rivalry.

The Questioning Beliefs quest might go a bit wonky tough. I went the opposite direction and gave her the knife while in Rivalry. First Hawke got the "Oh thank you so much cutscene" and then right after I got the cutscene where she told Hawke she was a horrible person and that Merrill never wanted to see Hawke again.

In the end she smashed the mirror and everything hurt.

Also Merrill will NOT destroy the mirror on the friendship path. She will only destroy it on the Rivalry path. Giving or keeping the knife does NOT affect the fate of the mirror.

Hmm, I see. That's pretty much what I was afraid of. If the cutscenes might be wonky like that and the fact that she will not destroy the mirror makes it seem unappealing to refuse her the knife now.
