Following the reviews today it has been revealed (and suspected before today) that some of these missions are quite lengthy, I don't have an issue with this as they continue after you have shut down the game. What I am worried about is obviously you need to be connected to the net such that the mission can be logged in the servers so they can be completed when you are not playing. What happens if you are playing offline or like me live in a bandwidth starved country and have a cap which eventually runs out, do these missions become greyed out, unavailable or like Assassins Creed IV where you couldn't access your fleet if you weren't online.

Secondly if the missions are unavailable if offline and I need the power the mission offers to continue the story must I wait for the beginning of the month to start playing the game again so the longer advisor missions can continue while I sleep/work/doing other things?

I am still eager to play the game (pre ordered ages ago) but I don't want to be gated by my internet connection.

I'm fairly sure they have said that the one and only time you need to be connected to the net is when you import your world state from the Keep (though that is completely optional as well).

You don't have to be connected online to play DA:I.  You only have to be connected to the Keep in order to set up and import your save state.  Once you have that synced to your game, you can play without being online.  You'd only need to go back online if you decided you wanted a different world state.

And as Sem said, even that is optional.  There is a default world state that is a part of the game, so you can check that out too.

I am aware of of these things but some advisor missions take a few hours to complete and the reviews mentioned today that they carry on even if you are not playing I realise playing while connected is optional (excluding World sate import) but surely for advisor missions to continue while not playing is done through online processes

You actually might be able to put the time on your xbox forward to complete the mission sooner if you are not connected to the net.... maybe. I know you can do that on some other games.... worth a try atleast.

I wouldn't think you'd need to be online Simon, it can quite easily just use the internal clock of whatever system you're on. I remember Fable 2 (or maybe 3) did it to generate rent from properties - and like Unnamed Warden said you could actually trick the game into thinking more time had passed if you were offline.

it would be very easy as in the fable 2-3 if they will be completed even after you leave the game as devs said

It goes by system time. So when you turn your system on and launch the game it will likely check the system clock to see what to say

If its system time its fine by me I don't bemoan the length just if it was locked to being online it would be terrible for us who live with terrible internet connections and draconian ISP's

It would not be a smart move to have the game constantly checking with EA's server about what the time is (what about people who turn their computers off?) that would essential be a ddos from EA to themselves.

Anyway here is Allan talking about it again

Okay, so a programmer saw me talking in this thread and helped get me some info.

  • It's completely offline, and just uses system clock.
  • Some of the times I mentioned may not be accurate as they're being tweaked.  Really short stuff might not exist.
  • Anything that opens up a new piece of content to be experienced in the game is done instantly
  • Your advisors are still available to talk despite being "on mission." In context, this often makes sense because many of these missions describe a larger scale organizing event rather than, for example, Cullen stating "i'm definitely going to go there myself, specifically, to spend the next X hours talking to the person."
  • Some of them are done to help with resource acquisition (Mike hinted at this), be it gold, crafting materials, and so forth.  There may be flavour differences between advisors, and some advisors may be better than others at certain tasks (usually shorter time, but hey, if Josie is on something else it may be worth sending Cullen instead even if it takes 30 minutes longer)
  • Most interestingly (to me), is that some of them have story narratives to them.  Some missions are only available to certain PCs, and how you choose to proceed with the missions (or rather, how the advisor you send deals with it) can lead to different consequences/paths for these more story heavy missions.  Upon completion of these missions, a new mission will be unlocked if appropriate to continue that story arc.*

* Note that the last point I haven't seen in game, so hopefully I didn't recall that wrong.  i.e. safety language in case I made a mistake but I'm pretty certain I didn't.
