I always prefer to play games on my PC for many reasons.  I do have an xbox 360 and a playstation 3, but they are backups (the new consoles provide nothing I need).

That said I received my copy of Dragon Age Inquisition today for the PC, loaded it, played for a while and then checked the forum to see if the handling and controls were as bad as I thought they were.  Then traded it in to Amazon and applied the cash to the purchase of Dragon Age Inquisition for xbox 360.

I realize that one could use the console controller on the pc version, but I would rather play the game in the manner for which it was made without jerry rigging things.

Honestly, I have not seen controls and movement as bad as this since the early Resident Evil games.  Hope for everyone's sake something can be done about it. Maybe eventually, if that happens I will try another run at the PC version, but not now, no way.

Yeah, the controls are really, really bad.

And I say this as a guy who had a blast with Dark Souls (after the mouse fix) and Dark Souls II (after adjusting for the dumb double-click delay) with keyboard and mouse and loved the Darksiders series on PC (well, except for that part about using Caps Lock as a modifier), etc.

They clearly wanted to make it behave similarly to the past games (which were designed for PC control), but I think it was really unsuccessful. Instead it's just a mash of inconsistent control behaviors that are only disguising the controller interface scheme—they should have just made it work like the console game that it is, ditched the mouse support for most everything, hooked up mouse-look and used standard WASD for all movement.

It wouldn't have been great, but at least it could have been a good console port, instead of this janky interface that is only impeding control.

They said we would be able to walk fwd while holding down both mouse buttons, "Just like previous games"  A Bio developer came on here and said it.  And in previous games, you could do that and "steer" via the mouse.  You are saying that dynamic is gone now?  It's a shooter, basically?

As far as I could determine, there is no such functionality. Maybe you can drive in tactical view, but there are a lot of places in the early game where you can't even drop into the tactical view, so I'm not sure.

It's really, really funky. Worse than I would have ever believed. It's like a layer of obfuscation on top of a standard console control scheme that's just making it harder to do the things we're used to.

It plays like ass. Controller definitely recommended.

i flipped the mouse control (so left does what right does and vice versa)... and now it feels like every MMO I've played... even more so after I bumped the difficulty to casual. think that pretty much sums up the good and the bad side of the control scheme found in DAI

at the end of the day I'll get used to it, it doesn't ruin it from having a great story (potentially, I don't know yet) but I guess it just feels odd... we've had 3 DA game and basically 3 different control schemes... I understand the need to reinvent the wheel but to change it from a circle to a square to a triangle... why? that I have no answer for

if anyone is playing KB + mouse they should probably expect a learning curve, a degree of frustration and the need to experiment with keybinds

I blame EA more than bioware. ea stupidly thinks consoles are where the money's at, even though steam has more users and buy more stuff

Drama much?

We saw gameplay video with the UI made for PC, i've hardly see anything close to Skyrim.

Or Origins..

On PC space is "loot all" or so I have heard.

Kindof - AFAICT spacebar is 'select' in that menu, and by default the highlighted option is "take all".

However, you're then left with:

- manoeuvre character with WASD + camera with mouse.

- press 'f' to loot.

- press spacebar to loot all.

That wouldn't be too bad, but the game loves to have 3 different loot containers in a single room, each with a single item.

From what I recall, even Skyrim had a better loot UX than DAI (being worse than Skyrim/PC in any UI feature is very impressive).

I personally cant stand the mouse controls the way they are.  Why isn't the camera locked all the time?  They should have a toggle to switch between the mouse cursor on and toggling to lock the camera again. If it was like that, then it would be much easier for combat.  but having to hold down both buttons on the mouse is ridiculous.

Bioware should look at this and at least patch it and give us the choice of how to toggle the camera on and off.

As for Auto attacking, That would not be so bad if you had the camera locked, if the camera was locked then it would make combat far easier to deal with.  But Ill take it if they also add this in a patch.

If you have no idea what I'm referring to on the camera, take a look at Neverwinter Online, and how they toggle between the camera locked and the mouse cursor. if you have, then you know what I talking about.

I hope they are listening.

I had to switch to a game pad,  I couldn't take those controls.  It's fine for now, but when I start getting more abilities and stuff - it will be a problem.  DAO had the best UI ever, I don't know why the powers that be always want to distance themselves from that game.  At least let us click to move with the mouse.

I have not installed or played yet.  I have the game.  I think I might wait for the patch (or when I have more time). From what I have read, the controls sound very similar to the Witcher 2 and the Mass Effect games.  Is that accurate?

Secondly, can you scroll to tactical camera using the mouse wheel?

No, not really. you don't need to press any buttons to pan the camera in Witcher 2, thus moving around is much easier, simply hit w and turn the camera to adjust your direction as needed. But in DAI  you must press the right mouse button, while moving the mouse, then with your other hand, you must fiddle with the WASD keys.

And the F*cking combat controls in the midst of all this.... (ugh)

You know, I've just come to a sobering realization: I simply don't have enough arms to play this game.

Secondly, can you scroll to tactical camera using the mouse wheel?

Sorta?

Thanks.  This makes it sound like pausing is a must in combat, which is then strange that there is no auto attack (outside to tac cam).

I hope the tac cam scroll out is not too unwieldy.

Kind of what we were talking about back in Sept. Oh, how they did hide from us the ugly truth...

Infuriating to know that it plays so beautifully on a PS4 and is so messed up on the pc.  Didn't they test this thing using a pc?  Doesn't sound like it.  I just can't believe they did this to pc users, who have a lot of (me included since BG) history with the company and among their longest,or oldest customer base.  I cannot understand their thinking on this

I really want to like this game, I had planned to play it a lot during the holiday breaks. The controls, menus, tactical camera, and other pc unfriendly design decisions are really getting in the way though.

Just wanted to point out, the first boss fight in this game really puts a spotlight on what's wrong with the tac-cam. While in tac-cam, it was virtually impossible to get the camera angle correct so that I could see the thingy you need to interact with. I knew what I needed to do, I just couldn't find the place to click because it's positioned so high, (I couldn't locate it with the camera angles available to me). I find it curious that you would design the first boss fight in a way that highlights one of the biggest weaknesses of your game.

Bioware has the right to make any kind of game they want, for any platform they want with any mechanics they want.

I think with this game, Bioware has decided that the PC market is not one they are interested in, anymore. Anyone play-testing the controls would have seen the problems immediately. The fact that the game shipped, with such horrible controls, shows that someone decided that it just wasn't important. That means I (and others like me) as a customer am not important to Bioware.

Since they do not consider my interests important, than, regretfully, I will no longer buy their products; unless they fix it. This was the last straw. After DA:2 and ME-3, I just don't think they have the same "magic." Someone continues to make some really suspect decisions.

I really wish they had made this a console exclusive release and then, sub-contracted a port out to some other PC friendly company.

Sorry, I realize I am ranting but I really want to play this game but the controls make it impossible for me to do so. I have yet to get past the first boss fight, even on casual, because the controls are just so bad. I have NEVER played a Bioware game on causal before.

I also hope that any PC users considering buying the game, realize the problems here. I really wish I had not pre-ordered this game and that is the first time I have ever said that about anything purchased from Bioware.

They probably would not care at all unless the sales would be similar to DA2

With a link to a post in Feedback and Suggestions that basically describes what Bioware has done, as well as a way to let them know it's not alright.

This isn't the end of the world. If they receive enough complaints, they'll probably patch it. If not I'm pretty sure a control scheme is easy enough to mod, despite the engine. Until then, try getting used to it or just use a gamepad if it's that bad.

Problem is we might have finished the game before they release one.

Unlikely.  If it's as bad as some are saying, like you can't even be bothered to pay attention to the graphics or the story because you can't execute the combat how you want...  then I can see the majority of people just moving on to something else.
