I agree that the tactical camera is a disaster. It was much better in DA:O. I also dislike that certain actions can only be completed in tac cam.

The game has been great so far, but the PC controls need some work. My issues:

  • No auto-attack
  • No moving by pressing both left and right mouse button (since MB1 is attack)
  • Tac cam doesn't zoom out far enough.
  • Some actions restricted to tac cam view.
  • Press F to loot, but you have to click to 'take all'.
  • No option to walk.
  • Can't bind actions to mouse.
  • Menus are terrible. Need to be redesigned completely to look decent on PC.
-> Skill trees much too large and no option to zoom out. You have to scroll the view because it doesn't fit.
-> There are separate screens for everything. They should just make everything smaller so we get a good overview.
-> Using mouse scroll to go down a list selects different options.

It's a great game, but it's clear mouse and keyboard controls were an afterthought. Such a shame.

You know, I can't even tell if it's a good game or not because I'm so frustrated by the controls and everything mentioned here. I don't own a game controller and I sure as hell don't want to buy one for one game. I don't think I've ever complained about camera or movement controls in my life, simply because I'm not a savvy enough gamer to notice these things, but these things I definitely noticed. Why would these things be different from previous DA titles is the thing I can't figure out.

Even if you're able to work around it and get used to it, there's a lot for a PC player to be unhappy about.

Currently I agree and disagree with the sentiments here. Fortunately I believe my gripes are fixable.

First, the tactical camera is near useless with how close it is the ground. Fix it higher. I rather have clipping in camera than a useless one.

Second, please allow us to just auto-attack. Jamming R or a key is really not that fun.

Ok then, guess I'm not gonna buy the game this week like I was planning. Oh well, maybe in 2-3 months if they patch some of these concerns.

Nope. The Indian customer service guy said I don't get a refund for a reason he pulled out of his ***. They wouldn't even give me a gift certificate so that I could buy another game.

That "Great Game Gaurantee" stuff mentioned on the Origin page is a bunch of BS.

Do you recall the reason he gave?

Maybe contact them again and get a different result with a different rep? That's happened to me with other companies.

Why this aversion against game pads? I've been playing PC games for about 15 years now and I can still remember how many games back in the day required game pads and joysticks to run properly. No one would have complained back then about the games being bad ports or optimized for consoles because the only consoles out at the time were the NES and Master Drive.

I agree that the menus and controls in DAI have been optimized for game pads, but that doesn't mean that the game is a bad port. The Witcher 2 has similar menus and is also optimized for the 360 controller, but that game is universally praised for being a "true" pc game.

I tried both the controller and M&K and while the M&K controls aren't that bad, they certainly aren't very good either. With the 360 controller however, the game plays absolutely wonderful.

This sucks why do I need to use a controller for the PC !

I already posted this in another thread, but anyways:

I don't want to buy a game pad. Simple. It's another piece of equipment I don't care to hook up to my PC. If I wanted to play with a controller I'd buy a console.

Is that rly so bad?

not really. some people make it look worse than it really is. the default controls are somewhat strange to say the least, but since most of the controls are rebind-able, that's not the major issue here. the problem is that the ui as well as the controls in general are optimized for the game pad and that the tactical view is more intuitive to use with game pads as well. M&K controls aren't terrible but don't expect DAO level of quality.

Im all for options.

So im glad controllers are an option, i play Witcher 2 with a controller.

What i dont like is how the M+K controls feel awkward, and how poor the menu screens are. Clearly designed for controllers first and not really optimized for M+K play. DA2 had far better menus. Ive posted about this in my PC controls and suggestions thread.

I do find spamming v every second to look for shinies to be a very annoying feature tho.

Yes, this feature is a bit strange. What's a sonar ping doing in a medieval fantasy game?

Wasteland 2 has it too. At least it's functional and doesn't interrupt game play.

I have an aversion to gamepads because they hurt. So it really is kb+m or nothing.

Witcher 2 had it too. I feel its made for controllers where they can press on one of the sticks to trigger the pulse.

Its annoying, the highlight doesnt last long, and the highlight isnt that obvious either.

I've been playing PC games for 25 years.  I haven't had to use a joystick in 20 years and never a game controller.  I play 3rd person only games, so I can always do just about everything with a mouse and maybe one or two keys.  DAO and DA2 for example - mouse, space bar, and tab.  Using the mouse for movement is a very accurate way of moving.  I can pause, click the spot I want to move to, see exactly where that spot is, and unpause to move there (or not pause and click/move with the mouse).  Keyboard and game controller movement are not that accurate.

At least it made sense in The Witcher 2 though and it was better implemented.

Watching some twitch streams in caves and such on PC and the cam seems to work ok from what i can see. There are a few issues with mis-targeting but watching theses streams the cam is moving around well enough. I really thought it would be worse than it seems from this thread. I say this as my opinion only as I have not played it on PC directly as some obviously have in here and that is their experience so I am not discounting their opinions just offering my impressions from watching twitch streams today so far.

The point of the radar is to make you walk. If you press TAB and you see all the iteractive items in the scenario, you know directly where to go and can ignore the rest. With the radar, you have to go traipsing across the countryside if you want to find anything.

In theory sure.

In reality, the highlight is far too subtle and doesnt stay on screen for long enough. Finding loot for mobs you just killed requires you to spam the key to make sure you not missed anything. Same thing when searching for book etc.

Gets old and annoying very fast.

Hmm.... maybe you could explain to me what the controller improves in DAI. I understand interfaces not taking advantage of the kb/m, but I've never seen what the controller actually does better. Of course, since I've never seen any advantage to using a controller I've never really tried to use one much.

That's your own fault then. There are tons of beat 'em ups, jump 'n run games, space operas and simulators that require joysticks and game pads. BTW: Third person games in particular play better with analogue movement. You should know this by now after playing them for 25 years.

How do we know they are not using a controller ?
