says who?

being a Dalish Athiest is as simple as being a jewish Athiest.

I always play athiest.

My PC is usually atheist too. This time around my first playthrough will be with an Adrastian (but a very disillusioned one) because I'm playing a mage and I think it'll be interesting to RP this character who has been told her whole life that the Maker hates her for being who she is. But yeah, you can totally play an atheist. Considering that even we as the players don't know (and will never know, according to Gaider) if the Maker is real or not, it's especially absurd to think that you can't RP an atheist.

Oh and as for things popping into existence, again this is a perception issue. When we strike a match we know that it will create a fire. However, someone who doesn't know that or doesn't understand the chemical reaction that happens will believe that a fire just popped into existence. Magic does not negate science nor does science negate magic. It is all about the perception of the people who are witnessing the magic.

Well there was a nice banter between Morrigan and Leiana about the issue(copy paste from Wiki):

  • Leliana: I'm wondering Morrigan... do you believe in the Maker?
  • Morrigan: Certainly not. I've no primitive fear of the moon such that I must place my faith in tales so that I may sleep at night.
  • Leliana: But this can't all be an accident. Spirits, magic, all these wonderous things around us both dark and light. You know these things exist.
  • Morrigan: The fact of their existence does not presuppose an intelligent design by some absentee father-figure.
  • Leliana: So it is all random, then? A happy coincidence that we are all here?
  • Morrigan: Attempting to impose order over chaos is futile. Nature is, by its very nature, chaotic.
  • Leliana: I don't believe that. I believe we have a purpose. All of us.
  • Morrigan: Yours, apparently being to bother me.

  • ...
  • Leliana: How can someone who practices magic have so little capacity to believe in that which she cannot see?
  • Morrigan: Magic is real. I can touch it and command it and I need no faith for it to fill me up inside. If you are looking for your higher power, there it is.
  • Leliana: But only if you can control it. I do not envy the loneliness you must feel at times Morrigan.
  • Morrigan: I... leave me be. Loneliness would be preferred to this... endless chatter.

Magic and spirits are "natural" parts of Thedas but an omnipotent entity is such as maker who is beyond the rules both apply to mortals and spirits, is metaphysical. So i think it's not a contradiction to be an atheist in Thedas. Because there are no Gods that demand worship; only the word of the chantry if you "believe" it.

Nope, you can be atheist towards different gods. In fact, all religious people are atheist when it comes to other religions' gods.

That's not what the word Atheism means.

Yuck.

This makes Leliana come off as patronizing and snotty.

That's not what the word Atheism means.

It's generally just used to mean a lack of belief in deities, I know. But in the same way that you can say, for example, that someone is 'humorless' when it comes to a certain touchy topic and that doesn't necessarily mean that they're humorless all the time, you can say that someone is an atheist regarding one religion or other. Without context, sure, atheism is just a general rejection of belief in gods, but you can qualify the term.

Also if you have played Baldur's Gate 2, Valygar was an antheist and his banter dialogs may give you some hints for your RP (it was possible to be an unbeliever paladin or ranger in 2nd edition, and i played few atheist paladins myself ^^).

I think it only make sense to be Atheist if you play as a Qunari or a Surface Dwarf.... If interested in RPG.

You do not belive in Andraste, neither worships any gods nor religion.

@Cat Blade:  I'm curious - why does Leliana sound snotty and patronizing?

Morrigan thinks she knows everything about everyone all the time.

Her commentary on men and women comes to mind.  Is she also patronizing and snotty?

Well, the dwarven Quizzy is a surface dwarf.  They do not worship the stone or the ancestors like like underground dwarves do...

The Qunari Quizzy - Is a Vassoth. He/she is not part of the qun.

I don't think you can roleplay as an atheist in Dragon Age. This is coming from a hardcore atheist.

The most you can roleplay as an indifferent agnostic. The simple reason being that we do not have theories like Big Bang or Evolution or Empirical Philosophy or Objectivism or Giant Spaghetti Monster or Giant Teapot Argument, etc in Thedas.

Atheist do not believe in the nonexistence of gods. They usually have plenty of evidence to back it up. There is no evidence on Thedas to support atheism.

However, you can be an agnostic in Thedas. You can most definitely roleplay as an agnostic Dalish Elf. I mean your so-called Gods have been silent for so long now that they might be a myth, the Maker thing sounds crap to you...but that does not mean you have solid evidence to say there is no God in Thedas...

the qunari are atheist's.

Morrigan being unpleasant, which she can be, doesn't alleviate Leliana. So, moot point really.

Leliana and Morrigan disagreed, mutually. To which Leliana responded with sanctimonious pity. That seems to reflect the things certain religious folks irl may say to other people who disagree with their beliefs.

Am I a bad person? I had an almost-literal spit take to the title because I thought it said "raping an atheist dalish".

I read rapping, myself.  I was disappointed when there was no rhyming to be had.

I've been hoping for good roleplaying options for this myself since I planned my first character to be an atheist for a long time. I think it's going to be a real interesting angle and should make for great conversations, IF they give the option for it.

Imagine the 'Herald of Andraste' going around telling people the maker is probably a myth. Hah!
