The apex of defensive equipment is a riot shield...

Of course it's nitpicking, but don't you guys think it's weird that in a world where you can spam a blast of incinerate matter to destroy almost any armor, you just can't destroy the Cerberus Guardian's riot shield? I mean, which material those shields are made? Adamantium? Of course, game wise, the riot shield is very interesting because it adds a layer of difficulty on the stablished shield/armor/barrier dynamics. But it's not very realistic considering the Mass Effect reality that is proposed during the trilogy.

Another example was the fog screen. You live in a world where you have visors that enhance your biotics/tech, holographic omni tool, holographic VIs and you can't have a simple thermal visor as standard soldier equipment. The apex of battlefield concealment in the future will be a simple smoke screen. Again, very interesting game wise, but not very realistic in the ME world.

What do you guys think?

Actually, just yesterday I was looking down at a Guardian's shield thinking to myself "this is stupid. Why doesn't everyone just get one of these? It's just a bloody piece of metal you could pick up in a scrap yard."

Not only the Guardian's. The Shadow Broker is a pus** until he turns that omni-shield on. Then he turns into a freakin' juggernaut.

I dunno, my engineershep has no trouble with guardians, once he materializes a combat drone behind them and they turn around. A riot shield is only as good as the idiot who doesn't turn his back on the people firing at him.

For the same reason you need to take multiple bullets to the head to die during gameplay, but during cutscenes a single shot pretty much anywhere is enough to get people killed.

I just use lash, pull, reave, singularity, combat drone behind the guy, overload to stun and armored piercing rounds to kill the guy. Not hard at all. Too bad Shepard couldn't pick up the shield and use it.

They are actually made out of pure plot armour.

Just like Jack, in ME2, where she can rip apart 3 YMIR Mechs at the same time with a single Shockwave blow but when you use it in the game her shockwave doesn't come even close to that.

Shepard hasn't been shot in the head enough times to think any of this is a good idea. And Shepard has been shot in the head a lot.

You have to wonder what those things are made of, to be able to resist the attacks of what are essentially hand-held railguns.

Must be the same stuff their warehouse crates are made of  :P

I speculate that the shield is immensely dense due to Mass Effect fields being used in its construction. Similar to the Normandy armor upgrade:

"Asari-made Silaris armor can resist even the tremendous heat and kinetic energy of starship weapons. The armor is nearly unsurpassed in strength because its central material, carbon nanotube sheets woven with diamond Chemical Vapor Deposition, are crushed by mass effect fields into super-dense layers able to withstand extreme temperatures. That process also compensates for diamond's brittleness."

They'd likely be very heavy, though. Which could be why we only see the cyberneticaly-enhanced cerberus soldier's using them.

I am a Adapt and without the right abilities their handheld shield can be frustrating. Unless you are using Singularity or Pull you will warm up your biotic chip spamming abilities that do little-to-nothing. I use Singularity, or my Cluster Grenades to dispatch Guardians. As for a fog screen, use EDI. She still attacks them even if the whole room is covered in fog.

When they use the the smoke screen grenade, I just remember the location of where the enemies are and fire and at the same time move to another location. No big deal.

Considering the number of Guardians in MP was reduced because they were a bit of a joke I don't think they're the apex. Mind you the Ghost Hazard map suggests that a water pistol would be a very effective weapon.

Hey, Themikefest. I would tell him to go out there and break a leg as a joke -- but that might be to soon, ha ha ha.

Apparently it's some kind of Collector-made something super metal which is too heavy for non-cyborg people to lift with one arm. Still begs the question of why Cerberus didn't just use that metal as plating for every trooper's armour. But then even I think that's nitpicking.

It's too expensive to waste on incompetent troops? You know, those troopers that would kill themselves no matter how good armor they had. + Alliance could loot them (old ME1 tactics, gosh) for that cool armor. (Well that's a stretch since Alliance doesn't loot Guardian shields, unless they really disposed of ME1 tactics)

Also, this metal still sucks hence AP-ammo. But that stuff can penetrate walls, not much to do here.

Interestingly enough Cerberus likely did incorporate this in a similar fashion with armor.

The biggest drawback is the weight.

Given how slow guardian's are with the shield up and the amount of weight it likely is to be due to its density I speculate that having an entire armor built with the same level of density would leave even an enhanced soldier immobile.

Those things you can make spin around in a circle before they fall over, if you kill the guardians quickly enough. I think Garrus should decorate the forward gun battery with them. You know, collect trophies of every kill.
