This is sounding exceedingly promising. Being able to play as good as you get with him is fantastic as well. He is reminding me somewhat of Sand from NWN2.

Oh Ryn, I'm so jelly! But yeah..6 hours went that fast huh?
Hopefully he'll get on with my eccentric Mage who loves everything then, especially trees.

Watching a stream of the early areas and there are so many banters where Cass Varric and Solas talk about how Solas came voluntarily to the inquisition and how he's going to stay even though he's an apostate surrounded by templars.
And I keep thinking how delicious the irony is.
Also Solas continues to be delightfully grumpy. I'm glad he's not always polite.

OMG, I went back and watched the female elfquisitor's version of the conversation with Solas. Heee~ She did the flirt~
Solas's alignment is Grumpy Neutral Nerd. I swear he's a nerd and a half sometimes. Every time you ask him a question he gains approval and seems to perk up a bit, ESPECIALLY if it's about the Fade. Oh man, and if you compliment him on his fade nerdery he's so proud of himself. Pretty sure he says "Yes, it is an unusual area of study" [proud]. Oh my gooood.
And he's all about you backing up your words. If you say something without really meaning it, he challenges you on it. Same thing if you try avoiding a question. If you say, "I'm going to do X", he says, "How?" He's Mr. Socratic Method. I have no idea why I love him so much already but I do.

Also, that banter with Cass? Makes so much sense now. He's completely uninterested in telling white lies, even to spare people's feelings. Guess that's the "has not interacted with people for years" thing. He always tells you his honest thoughts, no matter what. So if you say "well I don't wanna be a hero", he says "that's nice, but pointless. You are one." He's amazing.

He sounds amazing. I'm not sure if I want to watch streams of the same few hours of gameplay anymore though. I may burn out on the Hinterlands before ever playing it.
Ugh. I just want to know if we can save him.

So I broke down and watched part of the twitch stream that was linked in the Solas thread. And wow is he touchy or what? XD Very witty though. I can see why they described him as "wry". His humour isn't self-deprecating so much as just...deprecating.
I like him very much.
Which twitch stream? Is there still a link?

No problem! And thanks, Baka-no-Neko~ He just completely blew me away. He's so different from what I thought he'd be, but I'm so glad he is.
Also, because he doesn't smooth things over for the sake of politeness, when he praises you, you know that he really means it. And I get the sense that it doesn't happen often.

If he purposely caused the breach and joined the Inquisition as a spy or to make sure nothing went wrong with the Elder One's plans he already failed at that by letting the quizzy live. All he would have had to do was say "I'm sorry I can't stop this mark from spreading and killing him/her." So this idea doesn't work for me. In the prologue stream the spirit in the Fade memory wanted the PC dead. To have him/her still alive and able to seal the Breach and the smaller rifts would be counter productive if he wanted them to remain open.
I actually have a counter for this now.
Spoilers for the Big Bad and a big story event.

I got another flirt option and he's flirting back in a weird Solas way.
This sounds amazing. ![]()
That and he finds the idea of a world where the veil doesn't exist fascinating and possibly amazing. Eheh, he's basically super suspicious in like every way.
This sounds foreboding.
YOLO

Watching a stream with Solas/Varric banter, Solas is definitely called Chuckles. Varric is also honest about Bianca with Solas, whereas he lies to you about the crossbow.

Requoting again because I re-read and had more thoughts. ![]()
Thank you so much for letting us know the flirt options you've found so far. So exciting!!!!
Omg I told him I wanted to know more about him and he's like: "Why?"
This made me honestly cackle because that sounds exactly like my husband. Like, to a T. He's also the intellectual type and when I first expressed that I'd had a crush on him for a while, that was his response. "Why?" Not in a bad way, but he seemed genuinely baffled that I'd be into him (we're not total opposites, but we have some profound differences... like I'm an optimist, he's a cynic; I'd probably classify myself as Lawful Good, while he's very much a Chaotic Neutral, etc).
The first one was just me telling him that I'd protect him from anyone who tried to lock him up and he said something along the lines of "Oh? And how would you do that?" but his voice got a bit deeper so maybe he was trying to be flirty?
Can I say just how much I love that we can say that to him? Because that's always my first thought with my rogue or warrior... I wanna protect the squishy mage boyfriend and I will tear out the heart of any templar who'd see him dragged off in chains. LOVE that we can express this!!! ![]()
I'm such a Violently Protective Girlfriend ![]()

@jellobell you totally nailed the vibe I got from him! Since I got some sleep, here's some more Solas!
On top of everything, he disapproves of anything he sees as closed-minded. If he tells you about his Fade adventures or muses on a world where spirits roam with the living and you disapprove or call it dangerous, he disapproves. But he also disapproves if you just say you can't imagine a world like that. His response to me was simply: "Try."
He is also completely in the "spirits are people too" camp. When I asked him if he ever formed any friendship when he spent so much time in dreams, he said yes. But all of those friendships were with spirits. When I expressed how strange that was, as spirits can be dangerous and aren't flesh and blood people, he challenged me by asking me what even defined a person. Is it flesh and blood or the traits and personalities we know them by? The examples of those "traits" he gave were Cassandra's faith and Varric's chest hair. ![]()
So it's pretty obvious why he and Cole are going to be fast friends. Solas doesn't bat an eye around spirits. He basically treats them like he would a living person. He even thinks that our understanding of demons is partially ignorance. I can see why Weekes wrote in his interview that some people would think he was completely out of his mind!
Other fun facts:
- He doesn't mind blood magic. He thinks the fear of it is misguided and that it is just a tool and is fine as long as it doesn't become a "crutch or a passion". You can say you're interested in it and he responds that he'd teach you but doesn't know any. He never learned because apparently blood magic strains the connection to the Fade.
- He went and dreamed at the Ostagar battlefield and tells you the spirits' different interpretations of what went down there with Loghain and the Hero of Ferelden. That was interesting to hear.
- He always sounds proud and slightly surprised if you compliment him on his studies. There was a lot of "thank yous" in that conversation and it made me smile.
- He and Varric don't have a very warm relationship but they like to rib each other. And Solas's nickname is definitely Chuckles. Also, in one banter he decided that the dwarves were the "severed arm of a once great hero that is now lying in a pool of blood. And it twitches to show life but it can never dream". Varric took that in stride, thankfully. Though it made me wonder about what exactly Solas was suggesting by using that particular metaphor.
- He thinks the top priority is to find whatever caused the Breach and says he won't be satisfied until it's shattered to pieces in his hands. Take that as you will.
- He's really into his magic. Which is probably why he seems to pity dwarves. And he's definitely a fan of ancient elves and finds them fascinating.

Why is he so perfect? It's insane how perfect he is. I like how even I'm kinda leery of some of that Spirits are People Too stuff. And then I remember that spirit of...Valor was it? From the mage origin. And Justice in Awakening. And I can see how someone might form friendships with spirits. It's sort of mind-bending.
You know, I love the implementation of the approval/disapproval mechanic in this game. In Origins it always seemed too game-y with the numbers and all (morrigan disapproves -15), but this time around it seems like it gives you a lot of insight into a character's personality and values. It reminds me of KOTOR 2, where Atton was always sarcastic whenever you helped someone, but you could tell that he secretly liked it because you could see your influence with him go up. This game is shaping up to be amazing.
Is approval always going up and down? I'd like to be able to say some things that Solas doesn't necessarily approve of but then make it up by being super-curious and willing to listen.

Could it be that one of mine and my sisters pet theories is correct? That the dwarves did something waaaayyy back in the past and severed themselves from the fade?
Hmm... Which means he knows what caused the Breach and probably who, but doesn't know where they are. Makes me wonder if Solas did inadvertently cause the breach by giving the artifact that was used to cause the Breach to the people who caused it. And is pissed off that they used him so wants to stop them and their plans. Hmmm.

I semi agree with you regarding approval mechanics. But at the same time I'd love to have some sort of validation that "relationship" between quizzy and companions is growing or rapidly decreasing. This game got sooo many hrs and choices that trying to remember who disapproved or approved of you is practically impossible....You know, I love the implementation of the approval/disapproval mechanic in this game. That just makes me more suspicious of him, oddly enough.
I am suddenly remembering Allan calling the romance "interesting." I guess we know why that's the best he could come up with now. ![]()
