There's a quote in the blacked out spoiler. And more elsewhere.

Uhhh....didn't know it was a ?? that we couldn't keep him alive, just that he "could" go *splat!* (like other companions potential outcomes).

That....could be a deal breaker. For me. Don't have it in me for another dead LI, with no other game choice available.

Crap. I guess I will have to completely spoil myself on his fate, before I play. Ah well. It is, what it is.  <_<

Yeah, I'm afraid we picked up on it because a reviewer showed end game content where Solas was unavailable. Kirie got confirmation that he's the traitor but got no response when she asked for elaboration. Someone else called Solas's stuff "the biggest most major spoiler in the game" when someone asked if he could be kept alive but didn't respond to anyone in the thread who asked for clarification.

I imagine Solas's spoilers are ones BioWare wants kept away from people, at least until the game is out. So we'll probably have to wait and hear from people who finish the game first.

Yeah, they say some crazy things. A lot of what they're saying is speculation.

If Solas' death/betrayal unto the death is unavoidable, I will be very depressed and will regret the whole thing. I never bought ME 3 for what they did to Thane and Shepard. They've never unavoidably killed off a Dragon Age companion before (besides prologue companions).

And to tell you the truth, there's something both exhilarating yet terrifying about that.

Yeeah I'm not going to worry, DA games have always given us choices to keep our companions/LI's alive or not. So I wouldn't hold that rumour to heart.

Well, Thane's Death was already foreshadowed in ME2 though.

I think I'm still going to pursue the romance with Solas even if there is a chance that we may not be able to save him from whatever twist the writers have cooked up.  From what we have seen so far, he's still a pretty amazing character, and I'm excited to learn more.  Maybe with the added romance, we will have a chance to save him / change his mind (like Zevran), but then again, to make him pure evil or pure traitor just doesn't fit.  I'm just trying to keep in mind that GDL calls him very moral, and PW also said with Solas, he's straightforward but "it's more complicated with that" is his theme. To say that he is working for the bad guy this whole time just seems too black and white for him.

And then, does that completely void the Fen'Haral theories? Is Solas connected to Fen'Haral? And if so, are Cory and Fen'Haral/Solas working together? Or, is Fen'Haral looking to interfere with Cory's plans? Or maybe Fen'Haral isn't apart of it, maybe Solas was deceived, found the artifact, was promised a world where the Veil doesn't exist but didn't realize Cory meant the breach (hence why he may be present in the Tavern when it happened).  Maybe that's why he wants to see is shattered, to help alleviate his guilt.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. ... even with this resting shade face

Thanks for the heads up, @scintilla.

*audible sigh*

He hits so many points, that stand out wonderfully for me as a character. And I can totally work with a redeemer/turned redeemer type LI (who isn't doomed to only die). But all these questions!!!

I was always planning two (slightly staggered) play throughs at the same time - one female, one male. I think I may start with my male this time, and let Ulee stagger slightly behind. Any one else running more than one play through at roughly the same time? In what ways will your PC's be different from each other, if you do this?

As for making sure before committing a play through to him as an LI....Yup! Call me a chickenshat. I'll own it. *nods!*

I have to agree that if his death is inevitable I'll also regret my decision, there's a part of me screaming "Why do you always pick them? WHY?!"...

I'm only a little worried about a possible unavoidable death. In all the DA the death of a LI is a consequence od choices, so it can be avoided. (is not ME3, where they "forgot" some hcaracters where romances...>_>)

If not, Weekes made it so that Mordin's death is one of the best scene in all the trilogy for me, so, I'm sure it will be at least handled in a way that make sense, and is good.

I'm sure I will die inside if is going to be a scene like Atton in KOTOR2 (still a consequence, and not unavoidable) and I don't know if I'll be able to play the game again after.

I will have no regrets, come what may. I've never regretted Anders being my first romanced playthrough of DA2, even given how that all ended up. It was still a hell of a ride.

I do hope if death is intended for Solas, that it is at least avoidable somehow. Even if it's hard. I'm a big believer in earning your happy ending. That's why I loved ME2 where if you worked hard and took care of your squadmates, you could get out with everybody alive... or, if you chose, you could see the drama unfold from ill-made choices or personal issues ignored. But a sad ending wasn't forced on you as the only obtainable option.

I don't regret liking/loving Solas at all but I do not want this to be a Thane 2.0 romance. Like I said above DA has been different than ME,they give you choices to keep companions alive or dead. I'm sure this rumour is just rumour.  :)

Yeeah I'm not going to worry, DA games have always given us choices to keep our companions/LI's alive or not. So I wouldn't hold that rumour to heart.

The rumor says he can survive. The actual facts are "he was dead in that one guy's game" and "he's the traitor."

I'm still going to do the romance too. I don't think it would be too simple for Solas to be working for the bad guys the entire time. It depends on his motivations, honestly. I'd like to believe that Patrick Weekes is a good enough writer that Solas won't be a mustache twirling cartoon but that doesn't mean he has to be a good guy. Villains are perfectly capable of being complex and realistic too.

Thanks for the heads up, @scintilla.

You're welcome. Sorry it wasn't better news!

Honestly? I'm going to encounter the first racially important quest and run off to make (at least) three more characters. I'll probably have a dozen alts and one finished playthrough because I'm a damned altoholic. Qunari lady will probably be first after my elf lady though.

Well, devs have said that they took out the saving Hawke's mom option from DA 2 because they figured everyone would reload the game to get the "best" outcome.  I don't want that to happen to a love interest ever. They also regret having the Circle Tower lyrium option to save Redcliffe since it's the "best" option. I don't like choices where I have to be screwed over either way I go. There was quite a bit of that in Dragon Age 2.

Oh! I thought rumour was he can't survive...oops.

Well I'm still not going to believe we have no choice to keep him alive. I'm sure DA will give us one,I mean he's a companion...and LI. If they do give us no choice to keep him alive ...Goodbye Bioware!

I'm not too worried that Solas will inevitable die, every stream I've seen with the devs on it they have talked about how the game is about the choices you make and how those choices effect the world so why would they have a companion die and not have any way to stop it (even if it means you doom the whole of Thedas just so that they can live).

As long as have a reasonably high approval and you do his personal quest the right way I think you should be able to keep Solas alive.

What speaks against Solas' (or any party member's) death being unavoidable is that a good part of the game can be played post main story, so he would not be available for that anymore. I don't think they'd do that… but maybe I am too naive  :P

I still think every companion storyline can go at least two ways... We might not like the options for Baldy but I don't think we're stuck with one outcome.

So based on how plot-involved he is, do you think Solas is the "main" male romance? That is, the one with the most bearing on the plot? We know Cass is also very plot-relevant, and we get Cass and Solas right out of the gate.

...Wait, does that mean Cass is our Alistair and Solas is our Morrigan? XD

Well I think Blackwall is techincally still considered the main romance, but I do think that Solas is going to be much more important and one could argue that Cullen is too, so it´s a bit harder to pick out the main male romance this time around :P
