You know...Solas is basically Anders + Merrill but done right. XD He isn't as naive as Merrill; he's obviously got a lot more life experience and a healthy wariness, but he shares her views on demons and blood magic. His ideas are radical, like Anders', but they're grounded in logic and reason. And while Anders just wanted to tear **** down, Solas wants to build it back up and deal with the core reason of why mages are so persecuted.
I could never 100% get behind Anders' mage rights thing because...mages are dangerous. Now, that doesn't mean they should be abused and mistreated, and the circle system was obviously very broken, but the fact is that all mages, by nature of their relationship with magic, are a potential danger to themselves and those around them. And I had a really hard time reconciling this, because I always play as a mage first in DA games and I feel really connected to the struggles of mages. They basically got dealt a **** hand, and figuring out how to make it less shitty is incredibly difficult. Restore the circle? You're back to where you started. No surveillance or support for mages? They'd still have to hide their magic lest the stigma cause them to be attacked by frightened people. And then there's the chantry teachings, which are actually quite harmful to a mage's self-image. I mean, remember that human girl in the mage origin/circle storyline? The one who thought of herself as cursed? She hated herself and her magic to the point where she'd welcome being made tranquil. The chantry teaches people to fear mages, and for mages to fear themselves. That's really unhealthy.
But how would one person go about changing a whole religion? A whole culture? Solas is just one guy. It must've been incredibly frustrating to watch all these awful things happen while being able to do nothing about it. Hell, that's how I felt while playing a mage hawke in DA2. But, if you could do one thing that would end up fixing all of these problems, then wouldn't you try too?
...Of course it didn't work out too well. But I can admire the attempt, and the reasons behind it. Solas truly is a dreamer.
