I think possibility #1 is the most likely. It fits all of the information. Solas isn't actually working with Cory, but he has his own agenda, and probably visibly breaks from the inquisition at a key moment in order to get the artifact, thus the "betrayal".

I'll just wait and see, only thing that matters to me is that we aren't forced to kill Solas
I kinda expected that we'll have to take the lead with the romance, I just hope it's not too straightforward xD

I could see that. Maybe a "he took my ideals and twisted them to something terrible. Now I'm going to set it right and do what I set out to do."

 

But clearly that can't happen and won't happen. It's too game-breaking, like if Mass Effect continued from Synthesis. So you have to either kill him to stop him or, if approval is high enough, maybe you can convince him to give up the path and just let it go.

Yeah, I can see that. Or perhaps reminding him that Cory wants the veil down for his own nefarious purposes and it's way too dangerous to attempt at this point in time.

Like, seriously. It feels like a different version of the story comes out from every single person that gets asked.

Also I think the fact that he was doing all of this with good intentions and that it wasn't actually supposed to kill anybody is what's going to prevent him from being perceived as another Anders. Yeah, he screwed up, but you can understand why he did it.

 

But he's not quite the penitent redeemer. He sticks to his ideals, wanting to both set right what went wrong and finish what he started.

I'm significantly less concerned that he has to die. Intensely curious about how it all plays out, sure, but I can wait to play the game to find that out.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about sexy times but if there is no kissing I'll be disappointed :/

Oh yeah, in his "Solas is my Fade boyfriend" playthrough, I think he called it.

I think the desert Solasan temple is Solas' romance/companion quest. PW got a kiss after that (desert oasis).

All of these theories are so back in forth: one day, he's working with Cory and accidentally/or not causes the breach, the next, he's Fen'Haral. I think we're at that point where we just need to wait and see. 

 

... and silently pray for sweet Solas kisses and sexy time in his romance!

Is Solas commonly thought of as "elf thane"? I don't really see the respemblence. I mean, they're both soft-spoken, but Thane is very...not passive, but not nearly as driven as Solas is. Solas wants to change the world, to expand people's horizons. Thane wants to be able to die without regrets.

Thane's beliefs are very much tied to his persona (and he is quite passionate about them), like Solas. And yes, both soft-spoken, dry humor, and same age range.

That doesn't mean that Solas is a copy of Thane; not in the slightest. They just have some "similarities". I know I saw it right away, and I am a massive Thanemancer (as is Roxy....and Areskeith knows this. ) LOL!

EDIT: But I do agree with Coldwetnose too Solas and Thane have a little bit of "similarities" like she said up above.

Personality-wise, the only character I can think to compare him to besides Mordin is...Kreia (oh god XD). I know it sounds weird, but hear me out. Solas has that same teacherly quality about him. That same way of asking thought-provoking questions, which sound both crazy and strangely compelling. That same love of knowledge. That same pride. They both talk to the PC about their theories, and appreciate an open mind.

He's also got kreia's biting sense of humour, but Solas is not nearly as mean as she is.

So, uh, make Kreia an elf dude and subtract about 40 years and a whole lot of bitterness.

Perhaps he was coerced/enticed, even with all his experience, Cory bending the Fade like in the quote: into Solas's ideal world. A promise of his dreams.

Solas is quite different, even if he has "some" bits, that are close to those we have named. Excited to meet him. yup.
