I don't think he is the one "starting it all"... more like one who know how it started, and didn't/wasn't able to stop it.
I have another hypothesy...for the "evil face" and his phrase. the "I have to do it even if people would not understand" (or how it was exactly) can be an answer to why he is risking his freedom to help people that potentially may just attack and imprison him on sight since he is an apostate. It was after all part of the interview to PW about Solas.
His position than can be than way more different, and he surely isn't just the "usual" apostate, and he have different knowledge, be it because he is an ancient elf (or direct descendant) or was a follwer of the big bad.

It seems that every companion has three variations on their cards - the initial card, the "good" card (Varric's looks to be the Sun, for example), and the "bad" card. What we saw in the screenshot was the bad one, but by that token there should be a good outcome as well. I guess IGN guy messed up his personal quest or drove him off or something.

 

I freaking love this mechanic. Reminds me of the influence you had over your companions in KOTOR 2. Looks like your choices can have measurable, negative consequences for your companions.

I don't mind this theory about Solas, because 1. it definitely makes sense as to why he came out of hiding to fix it. But also because (Possible Spoiler GUESS) 

 

Since there is SO MUCH talk about Fen'Haral, who better to deceive Solas than the Trickster himself? Maybe the paintings on the walls are a reminder of what he must make right, not that he's working for him. And the shadow looming over his negative card could be him being executed for falling into his temptation and being deceived. 

 

OR, on the flip side, if we go with the working with Fen'Haral theory, maybe he is working with the trickster to fix the problem? 

 

OR, I'm hoping he is just the Spock-like elf we hope him to be who made a GIANT WHOOPSIE and will love our female elf quizzy. 

 

Like I said, the above is COMPLETE SPECULATION - but would maybe make sense .... maybe ??

I wonder if Vivienne's card from the IGN video was her bad card? It looked pretty unhappy.

Well its pretty obvious in DA2 that choice surrounding him will lead to bad news in the future if you go with it.

However, I've totally been preparing myself for possible angsty Varric death ever since we first learned he'd be coming back for this game. Because he's almost universally loved by the fans, so who better to draw horrible, endless wells of fan tears than to kill off a fan favorite? Hope I'm wrong as wrong can be.

 

As to the 4chan Solas theory...

I would be okay with this. I'm a sucker for redemption stories, and even moreso if they don't have to die to redeem themselves. Cannot tell you how many DAO saves I have with a living Loghain and his OGB running around. LMAO

 

Now that I've slept on it, I'm okay. Still gonna go into the game with a fresh view and totally take Solas at face value, just like I planned, come what may. And if he turns out to be some sort of light antagonist/anti-hero, so be it. I loved Loghain. I loved Anders. These two things alone tell me I have a pretty damn high capacity for looking past some incredibly bad/shady stuff to still appreciate the heck out of a character... so I should be okay with Solas, no matter the outcome. Just hope any potential death of his is avoidable, as I always hope that with all companions.

 

And speaking of returning characters (SPOILERS)

I stumbled on a thread last night that shows Loghain makes at least a cameo in DAO if you let him live and didn't make him die against the Archdemon. I almost cried. Not even joking. He was my favorite DAO character ever and after his Awakening cameo where he says he's being stationed in Orlais, I have hoped against hope that his Calling would hold off long enough for me to see him... just one last time... in the new Frostbite engine. Just so I can tell him goodbye, from a player standpoint (since obviously my Inquisitor has never met him before). I am so, so happy the writers seemed to have thought of every possible scenario, and included him even though very few people will ever see him (because it seems most everyone kills him, either at the Landsmeet or for the redemption ending with Archie). This made my day yesterday, which was needed after the Solas scare.

I am still wondering who's card is the one with all that blood on it, on the left and bull looks bloody creepy in that card I wonder if its his bad one. Varric's one is pretty heartbreaking to look at though...

Cole's card is on the far left. It's not blood, the sky on his card is red, which is still creepy but not as creepy. Iron Bull's card looks like it may be intended to be The Devil which usually represents being bound by over indulgence. I'm not sure if it's his default or not though.

Someone in the actual Solas thread confirmed that he did in fact cause the breach?  (unintentionally) Or did they just get that from somewhere and run with it?  Has this become a giant game of chinese whispers?  If it's true, what worries me is how everyone else will react to that, look what happened to Anders?  I'm an Andersmancer, I'm sorry...I never kill him, and I hate how hated he is, I don't want that for Solas too

Well I assume Assinquisitors may have to worry about that more than anything. Considering the spoilers and how bad it can turn out for some of the companions I am pretty shocked bioware has not added a "fail" ending. 

 

Since their slogan is lead them or fall or maybe they are keeping the fail ending hidden for someone to stumble on it.

I am in agreement I am not sure if its true or not but it will be interesting if it is true. 

 

Now my thoughts on Varric spoilers.

those who liked varric and let him keep the shard since they thought they can get something out of it in the future, since you know red templars and all that their hearts are going to be utterly destroyed. Another interesting note is that if the whole demon thing with varric is true red lyrium is like a beacon for demons? It also may allow them to use the lyrium to shape and corrupt the person since they can work through the red lyrium. This puts templars and red templars in a whole new light since red lyrium can sing to people I wonder if it effects templars more

Interesting that the red lyrium and the Taint/Blight both 'sing' to their victims. I wonder if it's the old gods in both cases, or just demonic possession in regards to the red lyrium.
