I'm trying to recreate a male, mage Hawke that romanced Isabela, and I keep getting ninja'ed by Merrill.  I'm trying to be friends with Merrill and am nearly maxed out at the end of Act 1, being careful to never, ever use flirtatious dialogue with her or Aveline.

 

Any other pointers for trying this again?  I get as far as Merrill's Act 2 questioning beliefs quest and there Merrill is at the mansion, leaving Hawke feeling like a cad for turning her down, and losing the Isabela romance anyway (right?)

As long as you NEVER use a heart icon with Merrill (including in Act 2) she shouldn't show up at the mansion. If she does, just turn her down. It's not bad on the friendship path. Hawke just tells Merrill she is like his sister. Merrill says that it's kind of him to say so, then leaves. No big deal.

If you sleep with anyone after Isabela, that romance is over. That's the price Hawke must pay for being a ladies' man.

Thanks!  I wound up drawing up a new Hawke because I couldn't remember where to go back to, and found the part in the Act 2 questioning beliefs quest I goofed on.  After that, no problem avoiding awkward mansion scenes.  Now to see if I can finish one of them in time.
