Is it "next gen" or "current gen?"

I got crucified for referring to Xbox 360 and PS3 as "last gen" consoles. So does that mean the PS4 and Xbox One are still "next gen" while the 360 and PS3 are "current gen?"

What Galactic said, but I personally don't like the term anymore, especially since it's a very vague term.
If by some demonic act EA releases a console next year that vastly overpowers every console on the market and some computers, for a @500 USD price tag, would that usher in a new generation? What if Nintendo dumps the Wii-U and releases a new console? Is that part of the current gen or the beginning of the new gen?
For me it's all needlessly confusing.

Yeah at this point I think we should be calling the X1 and PS4 current-gen.
Although they seem determined to make that horribly outdated hardware in the Xbox 360 and PS3 last as long as possible.

I think it is interesting what they can still tease out of them for this long, and it does create some innovative coding tactics, but it's getting about time to slow the production of games on those consoles.

This gen is a HUGE disappointment
This gen is barely out the door
Before Late 2007, I probably would've said the same on 360/PS3. There was like, Resistance, Folklore, and Gears of War?

As said before, Xbox One, PS4, Wii U are current gen. 360, PS3, and Wii are last gen.
Anyone who is saying otherwise is probably offended for some silly reason when there's no reason to be.
The term "next gen" should only be used during the time period when the next phase of video game consoles is being discussed and is in the latter stages of production, before they launch.
Once launched, they become current, as they are the newest phase of consoles on the market.

We left Generation 7 of consoles and moved into Generation 8. Why no one says "Gen 8 gralhics/gameplay/etc." is mind boggling. "Gen 8" is just as easy to say as "next gen" but is deeply more explanatory and informative.

Not sure if anyone has already said this(to lazy to look), But basically; yes and no.
Everytime the new consoles come out, for the first few years the games are just the same as the "last-gen" games in terms of graphics and so on, they may have slightly higher textures and resolutions. I remember when the 360 came out and the games were more less no different than late Xbox games. GUN being a perfect example. I had it for both the original and 360, and the only difference was the 360 version was at a higher resolutions and better shadows.
The only thing the "next-gen" consoles have over the last atm, is slightly better texture quality and I believe they're capable of having 1080p resolutions, which the PC has already had for a while. My advice would be to just stick with the "last-gen" consoles for a few years which will be a lot cheaper than buying a 400-500 dollar console that isn't even being used at 1% of it's capability and most of it's games can be bought cheaper on the older consoles AND there really aren't any "next-gen" exclusive games worth that big price tag just yet.
Or....better yet, you could just stay with the PC and *demonic voice* GLORIOUS PC GAMING MASTER RACE this time out like Me.
What I'm trying to say is, the next-gen **** is just over hype to get people to buy their new ****.

Agreed. I used to be a big console gamer and then really started shifting to PC ~10 years ago. Last gen I didn't even get a PS3. This gen I only have a Wii U, which I sort of regret, but it's basically a Zelda and Donkey Kong machine for me. I cannot miss a console Zelda game.
Other than that I'm completely skipping XBONE, PS4, and anything that isn't Zelda or DK on my WiiU.
I just wish more Japanese developers would release stuff on PC. Square-Enix and Koei seem to be getting onboard anyway, which is great.

Indeed. I'm staying PC this time out. I only went in to mainly consoles(Xbox) because I was a kid and unable to afford a good PC. Now I'm an adult can. I might get a PS4 sometime down the line, even though I've been in the Xbox camp since 01. Microsoft just pisses Me off to much for to Me to give them anymore money.

The Xbox One and the PS4 are the consoles that the game companies are starting to focus on now. I think that's the most important part. They are the current gen, but the lineup is lacking, so the PS3 and 360 remain more popular. Give it about a year or two and it won't even be a question anymore.

PS4 and Xbox One are current-gen due to being available now.PS3 and 360 now fall under last-gen.
This
The problem the PS4 and the Xbox One is they are not backwards compatible so a lot of PS3 and 360 owners ( especially those with huge game libraries ) are less likely to upgrade to the current generation consoles. It doesn't help that a lot of games from the PS3/360 era have high replay values to them thanks to DLC, online features and multi player components. Also, with AAA game development costs going through the roof most of the AAA games on the PS4 and the Xbox One are just slightly higher res ports of PS3/360 games because a lot of publishers don't think it is cost effective to concentrate on current gen only when the PS3 and the 360 have higher install bases. This gen is a HUGE disappointment
It's a circular problem. Gamers won't upgrade to current gen until more great games come out that are current gen only and publishers won't invest more time and money into current gen until more people upgrade to current gen.

Pretty much this. Although sometimes I still refer to the new consoles as next-gen.

It's the next current gen. It's going through that awkward phase like a fourteen year old who acts awkward but eventually turns into a beautiful butterfly. You aren't interested in this teen yet, but you will be. Oh, you will be!

Yeah, those awesome games are always just 1-2 years away!!!
The NewGen is selling extremely well. Well, PS4 is, anyway.
Best games, flagship products and 'system sellers' for both are re-releases of old classics. PS4 focuses on updating game of 2013 all the way to 2014. Xbone gives graphics updates to 10 year old FPS games. I sure am glad new gen is here.
So far, history of NewGen reads like an Onion article.

2013 - Xbone/PS4 were still next gen
2014 - Xbone/PS4 are technically current gen, but still able to be seen as next gen
2015 - Xbone/PS4 are definitely current gen, but some bones may still be thrown to the last gen
2016 - firmly current gen, though maybe the rare thing may come to 360/PS3 *shrug*
Then a couple years where we don't have to think about such things.
Next gen after this one may arrive by end of the decade. Maybe.
