I recently became indoctrinated into this series via the free copy of DA:O I picked up through Origin a few weeks ago. I loved that game, and would totally play it again (already have two playthroughs in!) so I picked up DA2 to not be left out in the cold when Inquisition comes out. Sigh...
First, the good things:
I like the new tree based talent system, for the most part. I'm playing as a Rogue right now and it is fun, not quite as much fun as DAO.
The graphics are pretty great. I have had issues with DX11 with my nvidia card, a GTX 660 with the newest drivers (sometimes people are missing body parts, etc) but I have heard this game is pretty notorious for being bad with nvidia. I have an Intel i5 3570 with 8gb of ram and the game installed on an SSD. Oh well, maybe I need a better rig to play this game?!
Kirkwall overall is a very nice city.
Now, the rest:
Anders, Anders...I miss the Awakening guy who was quick witted. He definitely wouldn't have opened up some BS healing clinic OR stuck around in a place like Kirkwall. I just try not to play him very much, because he is a constant reminder of what was.
Kirkwall doesn't really seem to change. I'm in Act 3 now, 6 years have gone by, and Fenris still hasn't even lifted a finger to clean up his damn mansion. Everything looks exactly the same, and at this point I'm just trying to be done with it already.
Combat. It IS fast-paced, but having to down like 20-30 guys every fight just gets a little bit retarded after a while...is there anyone even left in the city that is alive after my stay here?! And while my Rogue IS a killing machine, I don't think he should make enemies EXPLODE from a backstab, spraying the whole team in blood and gore which shows up while talking to people (who never seem to react to it).
The romance choices seem pretty weak to me. Everyone just happens to be Bi? I guess that's easier than adding more romanceable characters, just makes it worse when you don't like the options already there? Isabela? Why would I want to get involved with someone who is so undependable and obviously not looking for a romance. Merrill? She's ok, just happens to be a BLOOD MAGE, and just pretty damn socially awkward.
Having said all of that, and despite my huge disappointment with my Mass Effect 3 experience (that whole ending thing) I am still excited to play Inquisition. I know Bioware can make good games when they try, and it seems to be what we've been wanting. I will try and power through the rest of DA2 and maybe will find something else to like while I'm at it, but I now know why so many people were disappointed: we expect more from Bioware than what came with this game.
